Today Earth Day is 35!! Do you remember where you were and how you felt about it in 1970? I made a huge poster for my Science class this day in '70 listing ways to help the planet. Don't ask me what I listed cause its been toooo many years. Do you think we are better now because of Earth Day? What are you doing today to celebrate? My daughters and I are planting a tree. Do you remember how Earth Day was implemented and why?

Like Jenny, I was 12 and in the 7th grade for the first Earth Day. I don't remember that I did anything special, but there was one girl who rode her horse to school instead of the bus. That was pretty special because we were in the middle of Orange County, CA...land of tract homes and paved roads. I remember that she lived in "the heights", a semi-rural area nearby. Some years my family goes to Balboa Park in downtown San Diego for the Earth Day celebration...usually the week end following Earth Day.

Well, this year on Earth Day I shoveled snow! We had snow, not much, and it turned to rain later in the day. Makes me wonder what Mother Earth is up to!

My cousin and I used to walk up and down the beach picking up trash. I agree kids can do amazing things once shown the way.

Kim- That's awesome to have changed an ordinance to protect the dunes, who says kids don't make contributions! I hope our own kids learn what we learned; that you can make a difference.
Jenny-Trash picking is not a favorite of any kids, now or then! We try to make the activities diverse so that they don't lose interest.
The scout troop had trash duty for the special olympics one year and you would have thought they were subjected to chinese water torture!

In middle school we started a newspaper recycling collection point at the school long before the municipality had collection bins or did curbside recycling pickup. I think we got .10 per 100 lbs at the time and we were thrilled. I think that year we raised over 2,000.00 that got used for extra curricular activities. It was hard work moving all that paper but we kept that program going until the municipality took the job over several years later. Kids can do amazing things if you give them a little guidance and the effects are lasting!

That is so cool Kim! A human chain of determined 15 year olds!

When I was a freshman in high school , we organized a Save the Dunes campaign (Indiana Dunes in Miller Beach) and it worked! We even formed a human chain to prevent dune buggys from going through and eroding the dunes.

Bramble you brought back a memory! WE had an Ecology club in 8th grade( I was 14 in 1970) and we had our own handmade tye-dye t's for our "uniforms". Our science teacher was our sponsor and we would do things around the community to further the Earth's cause. Most of the time we were given trash bags and rubber gloves and picked up trash laying around town and parks. Our little club disbanded the next year...

Earth Day 1970....I was 10, and our school was VERY into the concept! We planted trees, made Tshirts (tie dye of course, it was the 70's!) that said things like save our mother w/ a picture of the earth and did several community service projects. We cleaned up a park and did a wildlife count as I recall. We were adjacent to a college so we always had student teachers in the classroom with our teachers so our experiences were always unique and varied. 4-H and my parents helped instill a love of the earth and nothing has changed!
We still plant trees, clean up parks and do wildlife counts, now with
our son's boy scout troop and school. We planted at our house this weekend some bridal wreath spirea, burning bush and a Yoshino flowering cherry. More to come ...

I transplanted a small oak tree that grew naturally in my parent's backyard. They have a very small confined space where the tree was growing so Dad and I decided a "move" was in order. Just in time for Earth Day! Tree planting is an act of hope and optimism for a better future for us all. I noticed last evening a robin sitting on the trees delicate small branches while still unplanted.

I think the Earth is better now than the direction it was headed in 1970. Legislation was enacted that has improved air pollution and water pollution over the decades. It was a hard fight, but people were serious about saving the planet then. Complacency has set in over time, and I think we are going to see loosening regs from our Environmental Protection Agencies. I think people are forgetting and/or are too young to remember the terrible haze over our large cities from auto emissions and coal plants. It is definitely better now. Manufacturing companies had to clean up waste they were dumping into our rivers. Endangered species were identified and are gradually making a comeback, but now people are forgetting how dangerous it is to lose a species in the chain. We have to be vigilant. Memories grow short with time.

Yea for Earth Day! May it live on. Remember when we all made habits of the following?
Pick up your trash.
Recycle.
Plant a tree.
Garden.
Use bio-degradable trash sacks - paper ones.
Turn off your AC when you can.
Think about the life your children and grandchilren will have.

Keep the Earth clean.

I spent the day in my yard with my hands in the earth and cleaning up after winter. Preparing for ceremony on Sunday.
Kim, Wow a fellow toastmaster!

I was six and had just moved back to the US from Asia. I spent today digging up perennials with my step-mom and came home covered with earth.

I am also going to plant a tree in the next week to honor Earth Day (today) and Arbor Day on 4/30. This tree will be the beginning of a breakfront on one side of my pasture.
