how about we all share some ideas (and directions/instructions) for some fun autumn crafts that we are making.

i'll start .. here's one (and soon's i get home to my own computer .. i'll post some photos) ... a little gift for a 'hostess' wo has invited you to dinner ... or just to cheer up a friend who might be feeling a 'little under the weather' ... or a small 'thank you' ... or just a little 'i love you' gift:

AUTUMN'S BOUNTY OF DRIED WEEDS

you can do this in several sizes ... i made mine from both brown lunch bag sizes and also tiny little brown bags that i got from the crafts store ... you can also use circles of 'burlap' or any other autumn fabric.

================

SUPPLIES:

brown bags or circles of fabric ... (any size circle) .. adjust your arrangement accordingly.

dried 'weeds', wildflowers, cat-tails, sunflowers, herbs, other flowers from your garden ... (you can cut and hang these and let them dry if they are still growing).

(pot-pouii) ... OPTIONAL ... (make your own from the above ''growies" and add an autumn pot pourii oil (available at crafts stores)

jute or raffia or autumn ribbon of your choice

================

DIRECTIONS:

gather drieds ... put them in several 'piles' to pick and choose from

fold your brown bag top down (carefully, remember .. it is just paper) a few times ....

(if you are using some pot-pourii .. put some in the bottom of the bag .. this helps 'anchor' it and also gives off a yummy aroma)

pick and choose and make a sweet 'bouquet' of drieds and insert them into the bag.

gather the bag mid-way towards the top with your jute or ribbon and tie it ... you can tie a bow in it if you wish ... or .. attach a dried flower with a few weeds instead of a bow.

VOILA! a sweet autumn gift .. and EASY and practically FREE!

I am so excited to get home and try some of these, too. My Farmgirls Chapter is getting together on the 15th, and I'd just love to have something to take for the gals...

Frannie - you are just full of the most wonderful ideas. I second Clare's thank you!

XOXO, Libbie

WOW!! I love all these fall ideas. Our weather is getting cooler, and I just got a small pot of yellow mums for the front porch. My daughter picked her pumpkins to put up there, too. Now I am in the mood to cut and create a wreath. No gourds this year from our garden to replace the marigolds in the front planters.

I love fall and the changes that happen, the glorious colors. Thank you for taking the time to write in all these cool ideas to help us get into the mood.

HALLOWEEN EGGS

hard-boil eggs (or blow them by piercing each end and blowing the contents out) ... (make scrambled eggs with these goodies!) dye the eggs ORANGE and decorate with black ... witches, ghosts and goblins. put in a wire basket!

AUTUMN GARLANDS

you can buy these in dollar stores .. or go for more expensive ones. simply drape them! over windows, mirrors, doorways, along mantlepieces, serving buffets .. slither them down a dinner table in a wiggly pattern and add small pumpkins and/or candles here and there in a pleasing pattern. use them on a wreath base .. so versatile!

AUTUMN CENTERPIECE

use silk flowers to make an autumn-hue (and long-lasting) centerpiece. choose daisies and marigolds or other flowers in shades of autumn and using wire cuters, trim the stems to an inch and ahalf long. insert the flower heads into a styrofoam ball to make a densely packed sphere. you can use little bit of hot glue on the stem to secure them. arrange the finished flower spheres casually in a wooden bowl. (you can do this for all seasons .. using current seasonal flowers)

PUMPKIN IN A JAR

somewhat like the idea above ... put the candy corn or jellybeans in a thick layer in a wider glass recepticle .. insert a pumpkin with a candle bored down into the top of the pumkin and light. (find one that doesn't have a beautiful stem you have to break).

TRICK OR TREAT PUMPKINS

there are so many ways to creatively carve pumpkins .. i saw a cute one with a 'flower garden stand that had three tiers ... you can use fun olde crates or wooden shelves too!

you need 12 medium-small pumpkins.

carve out the opening from the bottom.

clean it out (save the seeds to raost!)

then mark each pumpkin with one of the letters .... spelling out T R I C K O R T R E A T
using a drill with a 1/2 inch bit .. bore holes to form each letter.

Put the T R I C K pumpkins on the TOP shelf
O R on the second shelf and
T R E A T on the bottom shelf

Christmas tree lights, cathered in small bunches can be put up into each pumpkin ...., (unscrew the bulbs where the string descends to the next row.

NO-STRINGS ATTACHED AUMENT LEAF WREATH

GOT THIS FROM AN OLDE ISSUE OF COUNTRY LIVING MAGAZINE:

pres fallen leaves inside a weighted book for at least 48 hours and then coat them with matte acrylic varnish to help preserve the color. When dry, use spray adhesive to affix the leaves in a ring to a SEMIGLOSS-pained wall.

This article does NOT say whether or not they peel off the wall without leaving sticky residue (which should come off with an adhesive remover .. or if it will take paint off your wall. i'm going to try it on a piece of wood that has been painted with semi-gloss paint first.

in addition to a 'wreath' .. a 'border' over a window, picture, winding up the stairway .. gosh .. all kinds of fun ways to do this!

PRESSED LEAVES JOURNAL

supplies:

live leaves
journal

Have the children collect leaves then press them between the pages of the journal. you can put a dab of glue on the back of each leaf if you wish .. it is also fun to have the children write the date and location where they collected the leaves .. and any other thoughts they might have about autumn, leaves, trees.

a keepsake of a memorable day.

a 'craft/and decorating' idea:

supplies needed:

a cheerful heart and sense of adventure
several children
a gathering basket for each
a picnic blanket
a picnic basket of goodies
a 'glue stick' for each child
plain paper cups and plain paper napkins. (take lots!)
a sense of whimsy and adventure
autumn shade construction paper

wait for 'sweater wheather' .. this seems much more fun at that time .. and also wait for the leaves to start turning autumn shades.

tell the children you are all going on an AUTUMN EXPOSISHUN (as winnie the pooh might put it)

wander and collect basket fulls of colorful leaves
find a great picnic spot .. spread out a picnic blanket .. and give each child some cups, napkins and colorful paper and a glue stick.

tell them to create 'autumn designs' by glueing their leaves to the cups and napkins (to be used at your picnic!) ... and some for 'gifts'
and also to glue some on their colorful papers.

enjoy your picnic .. and play some fun outdoor games.

(blindman's bluff is always fun!)

I love the time you take to make things special. And your ideas are fabulous. I may have to try your Autumn's Bounty bags for the women I see each month. They would love them.
Thanks for sharing.

Yes Frannie, liked the fabric seed idea, you sent me some sweet annie in a little bag, love the way that smells!! Its in a little green check fabric bag tied with a ribbon.
Also tried that idea you had where you pound the heck out of little flowers onto a piece of material, that came out pretty cute.

here's 'nuther one: ... nd OH so EASY!!!

SEED SACKS

SUPPLIES: SEEDS ... FABRIC ... COORDINATING RIBBON ... cute 'hand-did tag'

DIRECTIONS: you can use a no-sew method, by simply cutting some fabric CIRCLES ... putting some seeds in the center and gather your fabric around the seeds and tie with ribbon. attach a little 'tag' telling the name of the flower and useful planting information. (be creative with the tag .. it makes the gift extra special!)

sewing method: cut little rectangles (or squares) from the fabric .. not toooo big ... because you don't want your gift to be 'skimpy'. fold the fabric (inside out) and sew up three sides ... turn fabric so pattern is on OUTSIDE ... drops some seeds in .. and tie it at the open end top with ribbon ... attach tag.

this is an extra special way to share your garden bounty of seeds .. and seeds are ALWAYS appreciated! xoxo
