Hi girls -
This recipe is for those of you who would like to share the Easter Story with your little ones in a special way. It's a pretty popular recipe, but I can't remember if I saw it in this strain last year or not, so I just thought I'd share anyway for those of you who may not have enjoyed it before. :)
On Easter Eve
Preheat your oven to 300 degrees.
You will need:
1 cup whole pecans
1 tsp. vinegar
3 egg whites
1 pinch salt
plastic sealable baggie
wooden spoon
tape
waxed paper
cookie sheet
your family Bible
Place one cup of pecans in a zippered plastic bag. Let the children break them into pieces with a wooden spoon.
Explain that Jesus was arrested and beaten by Roman soldiers. Read John 19:1-3.
Pour 1 teaspoon vinegar into a mixing bowl. Allow the children to smell the vinegar.
Explain to the children that when Jesus was very thirsty on the Cross, the soldiers only offered Him vinegar to drink. Read John 19:28-30.
Add 3 egg whites to the vinegar.
Explain that eggs represent life, and that Jesus gave His Life to give us Life. Read John 10:10-11.
Sprinkle a little salt into each child's hand, allowing them to taste it before adding it to the bowl (you only need a pinch total).
Explain that this represents the salty tears shed by Jesus' disciples and the bitterness of our own sins. Read Luke 23:27.
At this point, the mixture isn't looking very promising at all. Add 1 cup sugar.
Explain that the sweetest part of the Easter Story is that Jesus went through all that He did, and ultimately died because He loves us and wants us to know and belong to Him. Read Psalm 34:8 and John 3:16.
Beat the mixture on high speed with your mixer until stiff peaks are formed.
Explain that the color white represents our purity when Jesus cleanses us and God forgives our sins. In His eyes, we then become as pure and white as snow. Read Isaiah 1:18 and John 3:1-3.
Fold in the nuts. Drop the mixture by teaspoonfuls onto a cookie sheet covered with wax paper.
Explain that each mound represents the rocky tomb where Jesus' body was laid. Read Matthew 27:57-60.
Place the cookie sheet in your preheated oven, close the door and turn the oven off.
Give each child a piece of tape and have them "seal" the oven door.
Explain that the chief priests sealed Jesus' tomb. Read Matthew 27:65-66.
Tell the children it's time to go to bed. Express to them that you know how sad and disappointed they must be to leave the cookies in that oven over night. Explain to them that Jesus' followers felt a lot like that, too. After Jesus was buried, they were heartbroken. But what they didn't know was that a miracle was about to happen!
Nestle them snuggly in bed and read John 16:20 and 22. Time to go to sleep!
On Easter morning, have the children break open the "seal" on the oven to discover the cookies! Give everyone a cookie and have them look closely at the cracked surface. Now have them take a bite. The cookies are HOLLOW! Explain that this is like the very first Easter, when Jesus' followers were amazed to find the tomb open and empty! He rose, just as He said! Jesus is alive! Read Matthew 28:1-9.
