I am thinking of having a "Green Food" night here for the holiday. As an old time family tradition, we used to do one-color food nights for fun. As the kids got older, I kind of let that tradition go. I may have to make some green mashed potatoes, green punch, and do some recipe searching.

Do you do anything special for St. Patrick's Day?

Sherrie,

My husband plays the mandolin and the banjo, too. I love Celtic music! Have you ever been to MerleFest in North Carolina?

Laurie,

I just bought a bag of Irish Soda Bread flour. Have never made the bread before and have no idea how it's supposed to taste. The flour bag says you can add raisins, so I'm thinking of making some with cranberries and orange zest. Also will make some plain. As you can tell, I'm not Irish but I always try to wear green so I won't get pinched!

You gals are making me so hungry! I wonder if ds would eat green mashed potatoes? He can be very picky at times.

I'm already playing Celtic music on my mandolin & Irish tenor banjo. If I work my part time job that day,I wear a St patty's pin and an Irish headband I made myself. Most amusing part now for me is my divorce was finalized on St Patty's day in '99.

We have had the same St. Patricks Day menu since I was a child and I'm over 50 now. We have corned beef pie, (bet you've never heard of that!) mashed Irish potatoes, macaroni and cheese, and a lime jello salad. The corned beef pie is one that my grandmother always made. It is a hearty meat pie with corned beef, onions, butter, canned tomatoes and a little flour thickening put into a double pie shell. Delicious!

Gotta listen to my Celtic music. I grew up on it and just love it. I wear green and decorate a little. Bake Shamrock shaped cookies that are tinted green, bake Irish soda bread and cook up a traditional Irish supper.

Have traveled to Ireland more than once and on one trip our time in Ireland was part of a folklore tour. We heard lots of fun stories from the locals about the "wee folk".

Just thought I'd share our soon to be 50 year tradition. We were married on that day and we are having a 50th anniversary party. Happy day to all of you!

Nicole, I had that happen when I was a kid too; the trouble started when my first-grade teacher promised a treat to any kid who captured a leprechaun, and my mom conjured one for me.

Things were never really the same after that!

Oh, and thanks to this thread I've been eating corned beef sandwiches for three days.

I bake corn beef and cabbage or Irish stew, depending on my mood. I decorate the kitchen using my grandmother's green embroidered linen tablecloth, and a few other little decorations. I put cut daffodils on the table. The last two years, I bake MaryJane's recipe for soda bread, and play "Irish music" on my Ipod using AOL radio. The weirdest thing is how we get these pesky leprecauns in our house. The trouble started when my daughter made a leprecaun trap in school a few years ago, and the little elves keep returning, causing all kinds of havoc. They have dyed the water in the toilets green, put shamrock stickers all over mirrors, and left green footprints in my kitchen! Wonder if they will return this year? DD must make a better trap... ;)

I like to cook & decorate something special for each of the holidays when they come. It seems like the month goes by easier. I make green eggs & ham. I'm sure that's not St. Paddy's but at least I hit the green theme LOL If the day is slower than shamrock sugar cookies are good with a irish cup of tea!!!

Laurie, I add kale to my garlic mashed potatoes, and give it a whirl in my mixer. It kind of makes them green that way too. Yum!

i enjoy making corned beef and cabbage, carrots and potatoes. my ex is always asking me how to make it my way! i put a mustard brown sugar glaze on the corned beef after it's cooked and bake it a bit..
his dad used to love the corned beef- his mom wouldn't eat it so i always sent some to Dad-Dad passed last summer so it may cause a moment's pause for my kids this year!

i love to make soda bread and maybe will do that cuz i have been baking a lot lately!(and eating...booooo!)

when i was raising my kids, i decorated for each holiday. the past few years i haven't and i am feeling the need to start again!!!!!!

i, somehow, cannot do green potatoes....cookies maybe!!!!

Ohh, I may have to start something new now that I have a new family as well. Haven't done anything special for St. Patty's day since college oh so long ago. I like the idea of dying the potatoes green. May have to look into that.

Thanks for the ideas.

I decorate some as well. Make my corned beef, cabbage, carrots, potatoes and onions in a cooking bag. Sometimes I make soda bread . . .
But lots of Celtic music.
And, hubby and I talk about our trips to Ireland and the places, people and things we were able to enjoy!
I know where my passport is!!!

I always serve corned beef with cabbage & potatoes. I'll make Irish soda bread and have Green River (which I should buy now because it sells out pretty quickly the closer we get to St. Pats day. We started driving downtown to see the river dyed green.

If I'm up for it, I wear green and cook corned beef, potatoes, and cabbage for myself (just the cabbage and potatoes for Mr. Vegetarian). Of course, it always makes me miss Mom because it was her favorite holiday....
