You know how sometimes, not so nice people dump off stray kittens or puppies at your yard or farmstead? A couple of months ago someone left me a rabbit. He made himself at home right away, staying on the porch and munching the front lawn He thinks he is safe here and he knows I am a sucker for rabbits, even my large cat has gotten use to him and regards him as an interesting curiosity. I have rescued baby wild bunnys from the cat on several occasions and had to relocate them. The rabbit is not really all that safe we have lots of coyotes in the area and owls, my other cat disappeared the day before christmas but that's another story. This morning I sat down at the computer and looked out the window to see three of the cutest Easter bunnys you have ever seen! one is blonde one is dark brown with black markings and one is grey like the she-mother. I know this is a problem, if they don't meet their fate soon they will find my garden the peas are about 3inches high and there is lettuce in abundance, oh well, for today I'm going to enjoy every minute I can just watching them. Maybe, I could Fed-Ex you a bunny? any takers? |

We have always had a few wild rabbits here too but they seem to be kept under control by the coyotes, bobcat and cougar population. We did however see a beautiful dark gray domesticated bunny on our driveway several times this week that ran down into the blackberries as we came home. Asked our neighbors and found out that one of theirs was missing. I sure hope they can catch it before it gets caught. It is so cute!

Cecelia, My dogs, A labrador retriever and a Jack Russell terrier are constantly digging and barking at the cottontails hiding places. It can drive me nuts at times because they never will give up until they flush the rabbits out and then they never can catch them. I guess I secretly cheer for the rabbits because they seem to be the less physically able to defend themselves. They run rampant in my vineyard but I have protective tubes around the base of my vines so the little pests won't eat the tender wood. My canines try to protect their habitat but are outnumbered by the bunnys and outrun!

I haven't seen any rabbits about yet (we still have snow on the ground) but their tracks are all over the place. Did you know that in this country rabbits do not live in holes - they winter over under bushes, low-lying tree branches, etc. The tracks here seem to lead to our evergreens and my herb garden, so I guess that's where they're spending the nights. We had a pet rabbit for awhile (domestic, not wild) - that was an interesting experience. Hawks and owls are out all the time here, deer also, which have been a problem due to infringement on their natural habitat.

Oh Jp, hawks are so awesome! Yes , your hawk thinks there is a rabbit lunch in his near future...I have watched these hawks in amazement many times swooping over our pasture and grabbing a squealing, hapless rabbit, mole, or mouse and carries it off. Nature is beautiful, and deadly...I even saw blood on my girls' swings where a dinner must have occured the night before...Yuk!

This morning in my front yard, on a nearby branch, sat the biggest, most beautiful red-shouldered hawk I have ever seen. I think another creature in addition to myself and my husband is aware of bunnies nearby.

I have got Easter Bunnys hopping and running all over the place here...They are cottontails and my Lab loves to chase them but he is never fast enough to catch them. A few times we have found nests of babies and the girls would bring them into the house and try to raise them. They ended up back outside where they found them. They are very cute creatures but can wreak so much havoc on gardens!

This evening, in a bush right beneath our front porch, I saw a baby bunny! Later, I went to check if it was still there and there was movement, and behold under the bunny were two more! Three baby bunnies all huddled together, or else a mama and two babies, I could not really tell for sure.
It is so cool that they have appeared right before Easter! They are so so cute!

Aunt Jenny, Thank You! for the offer. I think my neighbors son is going to try and catch them in the next couple of days. I quite often had pet rabbits when I was a kid, and several years ago I raised Angoras they have such wonderful fur/wool don't they.
jpbluesky They are so fun to watch, you can see my dilema I'm sure your new garden shoots are on the menu too. I need to work on my fenceing today. |

I had not seen our wild rabbits for months - in fact I thought the owls and hawks had dwindled their number. But just yesterday I looked out my front kitchen window to see one in our flower bed right beneath me just happy as could be. And tonight, there was one in our back yard heading for the field. He froze and did not move for the longest time. I think he had been trying to get under my mesh fencing to my romaine and my peas! They are so sweet looking, and so funny. Squirrels I think of as pests, but the bunnies I have a soft spot for. Until they get into my gardens. I put bricks on my mesh fencing to keep them out - hope it works!
Our bunnies are gray brown with big dark eyes.

I love rabbits too. I have an empty hutch if you are in the Manti area I will take a cute girl bunny. (I can never tell until they are older) You for sure do need to corral them before they find those peas girl!!!
