Ya know, I know a good sale is hard to pass up. And that some make it an annual thing to do with friends, family, etc. and get up early to get some deals. Some do the breakfast thing and amaze everyone at the table with all the money they've saved. But....

Am I alone in thinking that this big day is getting out of hand? That Thanksgiving isn't so much a holiday in it's own right but a prelude to the biggest shopping day of the year where it seems the stories of people's behavior get's more ludicrous each year?

A man getting shot, people getting pepper sprayed, fist fights? Really?

I had the same experience as the others here. We are very poor and did need the price breaks. But, really I didn't experience anything bad or crazy.

We went to Walmart first, and got a TV (ours was/is was over 20 years old and no longer can get TV channel reception cause of the new laws). I also needed a new pc cause my dd broke mine last week by accidently knocking it off the table. (she's 5). And my MIL wanted to get my girls a Wii so sent the money for us to get it for the girls. My husband and I went there with our kids, it was crowded but really not that bad. And everyone was really really nice to us. One lady in line shared her food with my girls. Another lady was letting my girls play with her kids toys, etc. Men didn't mind getting me things from top shelves down, and with the ticket system they had there there wasn't any fighting or anything at mine.

Then we came home went to bed, and I went to Joann's in the morning. My husband got me a number lori, I did't even think of it, but he did. lol So I shopped leisurely since I was number 84 and they were only on number 20! lol And me and two Amish women went around together asking each others opinions on what we liked and what would be good for what project, and really had fun. I bought a LOT of fabric since it was a fraction of regular cost, and I had a really nice long conversation with the "cutting" lady when it was my turn too. And she was really happy and complimenting my husband who apparently she had been watching all the hours we had been there cause he had sat down with the kids over at the pattern table and that was right in her view.

Then I went to my local stores (they didn't open till later that's why they were last). I went to a local fabric store, and bought up all the knit I needed. It wasn't on sale, but their regular price is cheaper then joann's sale prices. (but they don't sell wovens, and I needed fleece and flannel too that's why I was at joann's too, plus the buy one get one plus additional 25 percent off thread), any way I got my gifts for coming on black friday though, had nice long conversations with the owners, bought the lace I needed for my projects, and cut fabric for my projects, since they have nice big tables and lots of good lighting! And we planned (the owners and I) my next visit and what projects we would work on when I come in next. In between that time I also went to a sewing machine shop down the street and had them look at my machine cause I thought it was broke, but the needle thing had just came loose! The man was so nice and sweet, well grumpy at first, but I didn't know what he had been through that day so I just kept being nice to him and he came around, and I think we're friends now. I know I will be going to him from now on for my machine. The girls at the local fabric store refered me to him. Any way, ended up putting a used, new to me bernina on lay away at his store, then went back to my local store for cutting the fabric I wanted to cut. And buying MORE fabric. lol haha

And that was my day out on black friday. I must say though this is my first year ever really doing black friday, I usually just go to my local stores. I will probably do joann's again next year. Probably not walmart as we got the walmart things we needed this year, I doubt we will need any of that kind of stuff again next year. The tv we had before was bought at a black friday sale 20 years ago! lol haha So that's the only time we do black friday like that. lol haha That was the last time I was at a black friday sale. lol

I'll probably just stick with continueing to do my local stores though.

Any way, when I was a kid though things were MUCH worse. I was hit, scratched, yelled at, and people were plain mean to me at those sales. That's why I never went to them. My mom did and I vowed I would never as a adult and like I said I have very very few times as a adult, this year and about 20 years ago was the only times. lol This year like I said seemed very calm to me. I'll never forget though when I was little my great grandma was knocked into a box because purses were on sale at Kmart, and she was stuck in there and she was screaming for help when mom and I found her! lol She and I are the same height, and it's always been a scare of mine since! That that would happen to me. We are only 4 feet 8 inches tall. lol

well I went to one store yesterday- Joanns to get fabric for projects....my daughter pulled our numbers right when we got in the store- we shopped and then waited to have fabric cut..a lot of people just left because they were tired of waiting, so we ended only waiting for about 2 hours. Then to the Cracker Barrel for lunch then home for a crafting afternoon and evening!

One of the stores near us does 50% off on all their socks. That is our big buy of the day. We stock up because wow, my boys are hard on socks! However, my parents always have us get the socks for them because we live in a small town and they live in Portland so their store is really, really busy. Ours was crowded, but not crazy busy. I was the third person in our check out line when I was ready to leave. It was fun to run into a couple of my former students there also.

I am amazed at the behavior that is shown on the news though. I can't imagine anything material that could make me behave in the way some of those people do. Craziness!

One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain.

I never in my life went to black friday event until yesterday...just to see people...i went to few stores and when we went to one of the stores...it is insanely crazy inside.

There were so many people waiting online everywhere, not enough air inside, it was such a chaos. I felt very nausea. I told my husband lets go home because I am going to puke now...

it was my first adventure and my last.

I always shop throughout the year. I hate last minute shopping & hate long lines.

I understand if people is poor and they want deals and if they really need it but to participate in such an event can be quite stressful and it destroy the holiday spirits. I also don't like to go shopping after the holidays...that's when they return goods that they wore and everything is in chaos. No wonder people are so stressout before and after the holidays. Holidays are so different now than compare to the past. It is a shame.

and everything else.

The toys made in America were on sale too.

I'm with you on this. Overall I stay away from the big stores - and didn't go shopping at all today. I couldn't believe the pepper spray story. Good grief.

On another thread, someone posted a fairly in-depth article (with photos) about all the "stuff" made in China - it was pretty hard to look at those people, especially the children, being and working in such horrible conditions so we can get a cheap Barbie doll.

I get up at 2:45 AM five days a week, so I can see DH before he goes to work. This morning I got to Toys R Us at 3:30 AM, everyone I ran into, literally, was very polite, people were looking out for each other. One woman let a gentleman know that he should keep a better eye on his wife's purse. I took my time, and had 20 minutes to spare before the sale started early at 4:30 AM, I was back home by 5:08.

I think the media is having the frenzy. Consider the locations of these incidents. I had the last customizable Lighning McQueen, and the last super effects drum pad, nobody punched me out.

It's crazy. I am so glad my two teens did not work today. It seems as if it gets worse each year.

As long as the media is there to fuel the frenzy, it will go on.

I just discovered this today, and I think this idea deserves to circulate...
