Anyone else out there stumped for homemade gift ideas? Usually I knit up a storm, but this year due to carpal tunnel issues I can't--and surgery pending in two weeks isn't helping me to get much of ANYTHING done! I haven't done much crafting other than knitting in a while, so anyone out there have ideas for me? I am contemplating making handwarmers, fashioned from rice and those stretchy cheap-o knit gloves, in the theme of "hot chickens" to keep in the pocket. (You know ,stitch on a little beak & eye onto the thumb, fill 'er up with rice, and sew up the bottom). Anybody every tried this? Will the rice flow out of the gloves?
Anybody have ANY ideas that would make my sister-in-laws squeal with joy??  Oh, and young kid gift ideas would also be welcome!!

Cheryl...I am laughing right now! When I first read your post... I thought it said meant white light bulb. I went to your blog to see what you were doing with dirt, light bulb, and a pot. lol silly me! I just Love you snowmen pots! What a great idea!

hi ladies i made cute little snowmen pots and filled with a bag of potting soil and a paper white blub. i have pics of them on my blog go on over and take a look. they are quite cute.

I have some inexpensive decorative tins that i'm lining with tissue paper. adding homemade cookies and fudge all decorated and giving those as gifts. I am also adding crocheted dishcloths for the ladies and boxes with deviders for remotes for the guys. |

We are doing something similar to the "kitchen basket" idea Laurie mentioned. I'm also getting some wine or champagne glasses (which ever I can find) at a thrift store, filling with dark chocolate, putting that crinkly cellophane type stuff over them to keep the chocolate inside the cup, putting them into a basket with homemade jelly, candle and possibly a small block of cheese. If I can afford it I might also get a bottle of wine too. For another gift I found a 50 cent mug from goodwill and am giving it with some cappuccino mix and a chocolate dipped spoon (all homemade). Basically all our gifts are either homemade or from the thrift store. What better use than to repurpose thrift store items? Oh and for the gifts that can be wrapped in boxes or paper we are using newspapers. For name tags we are using christmas cards that we got last year in the mail. All you do is cut off the decorative top part and write TO: and FROM: on the plain backside, punch a hole use some twine (at least I do since I'm too cheap to buy ribbon) and voila, gift name tags :) Oh, homemade soap is a great idea to give too!

I am giving apple pie filling I canned to Rosemary's teachers.
My family/ friends are getting a cookbook scrapbook. It is a Christmas themed scrapbook that I put recipes in and left a few pages for their own. That has always been a big hit when I gave it and if you print up the recipes on the computer if goes pretty quickly.
Some other people not so close are getting Christmas smelling soaps. I poured them into a cookie cutter mold so they are even cute!

This year I am trying to do as much of a homemade Christmas as possible.
I did a fair share of canning this past fall with Christmas in mind. I am making up "kitchen" baskets- full of canned goods, and even the "Layered" cookie in a jar as well for desserts! I am also including crocheted dish cloths, recipe cards, a cookbook and a few other goodies (wooden spoons etc). I think I might even inculde that neat recipe for "snow ice cream" from MaryJanes blog along with the ingredients (can of condensed milk and vanilla along w/ assorted goodies- its just too cute to pass up!)
I think that my recipients will really appreciate the thought and effort that went into these, and they will be something everyone can use!

homemade desserts in a jar
haven't made them since I was a kid but maybe someone would know exactly how?
candles with layered colored sand in a jar
kid gift ideas-
homemade playdough-add flavoring ie: peppermint, vanilla etc.
Got broken crayons? chunk up put in muffin tin/mold melt in oven (you could make drawstring bags to put them in)
Easy hats-fleece fabric (at least 24 inches long/width- diameter of head)fold in half long ways stitch length. Reverse fabric so seam is inside/fold, roll up/bottom is folded/the top is the dbled fabric (2 pieces) slice to make fringeys/tie with ribbon or extra fleece
matching scarves-choose the length/fringe the edges, you could even add a pocket
Fleece blankets-I guess they even have kits now-it's just 2 pieces of fleece, cut fringeys, tie together
Pocket dolls-decorating clothes pins into people
You could decorate small boxes ie:decoupage/painting etc. You could put marbles, cards, or jacks in them. Kids could then use them to put small treasures in.

My suggestion, if you're fresh out of ideas, would be to troll the craft forums for ideas. The best one for ideas might be craftster. There are lots of folks there with lots of ideas.

I am giving my 3 sisters, mom, niece, daughter-in-law and cousin a washer and a dryer..... read on before you hit the floor! I am making knitted dishclothes, hand decorating 6 clothes pins and packaging them with a sample of my homemade laundry detergent with instruction on how to make more. My first thought is they MIGHT fit in a mason jar with a cute label, but that is still to be determined. Any of you crafty ladies have any additional suggestions?

I would love to do more homemade gifts this year, but I have no idea what his family would like or if they would think I was absolutely nuts for making them a scarf or something of the like.
I've made plenty for my family over the years and they expect nothing less, but I'm running out of ideas too.
