Good Morning All: Smiley, Did the kids feel better about getting up 'too' early the other morning after their awards? LOL So happy they did well.

Just have sorta vegged this week-end. but today I'm working out in the garden, need to get my squash in. Breaking up rocky ozark soil is rather hard work on an ole lady.LOL Had to take a break, get a drink and check on you girls.

Love Ya!!! Have a great day, but let us all remember the reason for this day, let's all bow our heads in a moment of prayer for our veterans, and loved ones that have went ahead to pave the way. God Bless.

Lola

Every day, in every way, I become better and better.

Well the horseshow was a sucess. Our son took home 2 medals and our daughter 4 plus the queens pagaent title. We went to truck and tractor pull that evening. Long day. Just rested today. Glad for the extra day off. Sisters family is coming tomorrow for a bbq. Her hubby just got home from volunteering at Joplin yesterday. The president was there today. Its about an hour from here. Our weather is also warm but no twisters or floods so we are thankful.Hope all of you have a safe and wonderful holiday. Kristina our garden is almost dry enough to get in and till. It was under water quite a while. What instrument does your daughter play? I think thats great she is doing that.

It's too hot to do much here. It rained again last night, so we can't get into the gardens until they dry out. It's in the upper 80's and very, very humid. Even the dogs are miserable. I wish I had some ice cold watermelon to munch on. I do have a daughter playing in band for the high school's graduation, and then she plays at two cemeteries tomorrow.

Jonni...don't feel humbled. I think that our older generations understood who had come before them as families lived closer & heard the stories of families. Now, so many families are on the move, lose touch with the stories handed down. I just am so blessed by what you told us today by going to the unknown black folk veterans. I know that God looks down on you with a smile. BTW, I have asked to be your friend on FB...if it is OK with you.

Can you imagine, Lea? All those sons, brothers, husbands and fathers.

You humble me, Claudia. I guess it just seems like the right thing to do. I hope that Violet will one day take her little one to do the same.

Claudia, my grandmother(s) always called it Decoration Day, also! We always bought poppies from the veterans organizations, and I miss that they don't do that anymore. I still have several in my keepsake box from years ago.

I think I come from a long line of grave decorators and folks who honor the dead (both theirs and others) :) When I was little, we would go to the cemetery and mom would help my grandmother and great grandmother fix the flowers on family stones (especially cousin David, my mother's favorite cousin, killed at 19 in Vietnam). Just a few weeks ago, while visiting, she told me the very same story about his death that she tells me each and every time we see his stone--how he was a beloved only child,"such a good boy"--how his mother and father almost died from grief right along with him. Anyway, while they were tidying all of the graves of our family before us, I went around to gravestones where (it appeared) noone had visited, and picked dandelions, or clover, or whatever I could find that was pretty, and lay a few at their headstones. I never wanted anyone to feel forgotten.

I hope the day spent with your family is a good one and that whatever you do, rain or shine, we all keep in mind the sacrifices that allow us the day I'm crossing fingers for warmer weather--if it rains and it's warm, I'll be fine with it. Right now it's 48 and raining...blech.

Jonni, I am impressed. What a gift not only to the remains of these souls but a gift to your family to teach respect of those who have gone before. I'm old enough to remember when it was called Decoration Day, and the various veterans organizations sold red poppies. We hung out our flag, and decorated graves of all who passed...not only those of the military. There is a great website that tells of its history. http://www.usmemorialday.org/backgrnd.html. But I also remember amputated (limbs) vets sitting on downtown streets selling pencils after WW2. So with that all said, my 93 yo Mom, Dan, my husband, daughter and her children, visit our families' graves. We may see a show and then have a BBQ. Some of us have to work, so as many as possible visit. Hope your weather will be good...ours is supposed to rain....again!

For the last 3 years, my husband and I visit this long forgotten African American veterans cemetery in Anderson, Ohio. We pick almost all our roses and any other cut flowers for the graves. The county owns/maintains it, now (barely), but for about 30 years, it's been forgotten. The graves date from the Civil War, Spanish American War, WWI, WWII, Korea and Vietnam and are only African American soldiers. This cemetery has very few visitors, and we randomly put a flower on graves in a section. I wish I had enough flowers for all of them.

This year, Violet is big enough to help and she'll enjoy dutifuly laying a flower near the headstones. Being 2 means you have to have a "job"

If the weather is good, we will grill out, if the weather is poor, we will grill "in" and spend a nice day together as a family...this thread reminds me, I need to get my flag ready!

I have to work on Sunday, otherwise planning on ripping out the herb garden and redoing it. The oregano has decided it is boss and is staging a takeover!
