Today, the first day of spring, is also the Persian New Year of 1390! My husband is originally from Iran and every year we celebrate the Nowruz(spelled many different ways), Persian New Year. I've written about how we celebrate and the history of it in the past years here. I thought this time I would give everyone an official link to look at the celebration if they are interested. The holiday is about 13 days long ending tonight with a big dinner & exchanging of gifts. This is a national holiday, not a religious one. It dates back about 3,000 years. Here is the link:

I have my haft sinn ready and some of my food prepared too. We are having hummus & pita chips, Persian cucumber & tomato salad, celery Khoresh (stew), saffron rice and bananas & strawberries with honey yogurt for our holiday meal. Traditionally a noodle soup and white fish dish are served, but my husband doesn't like those!

The exact moment of the spring equinox here in IL will be 6:21 p.m. Persians are very strict about celebrating at that exact moment. We will be exchanging phone calls and Emailing relatives with pictures of our haft sinn and exchanging New Years wishes tonight.

I hope everyone has a Happy New Year & a wonderful spring!

Thank you Annika, Michele, Nini and Elaine! I hope this is a year of health, happiness and prosperity for all of you.

We had a very good time on Sunday and enjoyed catching up with family on the phone and by Email. Now we are hoping spring is really here to say in IL. We have been above normal temps so far, so here's hoping it stays that way!

Have a joyous 1390!
