Rag Rug:If you don't crochet, you can still make a "rag" rug for someone on your list. Use worn out clothing, cut or tear into strips and braid the strips. Then use a long needle and thread to whip stitch them together.

Pet Toys: We have two cats, we like to give them a little something but the store bought toys are too expensive. I have saved the tops of my husbands socks that got holey,(but you can cut up an old sweat shirt or whatever) and I cut out mouse shapes from them. I embroidered little black eyes and used another strip of the sock for a skinny tail. stuffed it with whatever I have, old paper, plastic grocery sacks, anything to make it puff out a little and whip or baste it together. The cats love it. If you have the money, or grow catnip yourself, they like them even better with some inside.

Kid Game: Same concept as the cat toy, but make 3 mice and 3 round cat faces. Stuff as above, or use anything available, rice or beans works too, and make a tic tac toe game. The "board" can be made out of cardboard, either 4 strips that they assemble each time, or the inside of a cereal or packing box.

Teenage girl purse:
Cut up a pair of worn out jeans to make a cool purse. If you don't sew you can always punch holes and "lace" the pieces together. The top of the jeans are best because of the numerous pockets. Just one side also works great and isn't so bulky if you use an adult pair. These are great if you sew a lining inside, but easily workable if you don't, use an old pillowcase, cut it to size using as many of the seams in place as you can, glue the other ones together with fabric glue, turn so the un-seamed side is the inside of the purse and whip it together or glue it in. Add trims and pins and buttons to the character of your teen.

Childrens keepsake journal: These are so easy and quick from "trash" you normally have around the house. Use two pieces of cardboard, either from cereal boxes, cardboard boxes, old gift boxes, if you don't have that, you can stiffen up some used fabric pieces by using a mixture of flour and water. It makes a smooth glue and when dry the fabric is nice and stiff. Make sure to cut the pieces to size first. Then punch some holes in the edge. Make the pages either out of an old book, newspaper of magazine. Glue (yep the flour and water) several together to make a nice sturdy page. punch holes in the pages too. Start the "book" off by putting your intended childs name on front, and then glue something special on the first page, like a report card or picture they have drawn. I have lots of "love notes" scribbles from my grandkids and this is a way to put them in a special place. Then they can collect other things to put on the rest of the pages. With instant backgrounds from the pages you choose the book is colorful even for a toddler to look at.

I hope these ideas are useful, Please add yours as well!

I make lots of jar mixes. You can find some great recipes online. Not a new idea, I know, but fun to make and not too expensive if you find recipes that contain ingredients easy to find and that you may already have in your cabinet. I use scrap material to put on top and jars I collect all year long.

Great ideas.

I've made easy bibs out of wash cloths. You cut a circle centered about an inch and a half from the top of the cloth for the head opening. Then, add knit ribbing ( about 2/3 length of the circumference of the head opening) and make a collar like you would a tee shirt. You can embroider lots of cute items on the bib to personalize.

Tracy I love those sock monkeys! I have a friend who uses wool sweaters from the thrift and shrinks them first, they make awesome pillows. She also uses thrift sweaters and puts the sleeves of them into a denim vest. Of course that is all subject to finding a vest! LOL! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the great ideas! I can't wait to make the keepsake journal. This year I'm going to try my hand at sock monkeys and other sock animals, and probably pillows made from sweaters.
