I am !!! I just pulled out all of my favorite cook books and holiday books and am looking to break away from tradition this year a bit. With the likelihood of a pumpkin shortage this year due to the blight, I'm thinking a warm baked custard for Thanksgiving instead. I'm also going to try to get a naturally raised "wild" turkey if I can afford one!

Lets share favorite ideas and recipes for a super farmgirl holiday season! With money being tight for a lot of people (including us!) I think a lot of us are having to be more creative with our holiday menus.

For instance, you can use some other squashes and or sweet potatoes/yams to make a similar tasting and yummy pie (My paternal granddad was from Little Rock and made a delicious sweet potato pie!) if pumpkin is scarce in your area due to the pumpkin blight.

I always make a chicken liver mousse and a Brie baked in a crust for starters, along with fresh fruit and vegies and crackers. I'm trying to think of something to jazz up the traditional goodies! Hmmmmmmmmm....

Wow! What great ideas! I spend most holidays alone but still make a feast for myself. I don't have my menu yet but have been thinking about getting an electric smoker and doing a turkey in that. Masterbuilt has one that doesn't require a lot of babysitting like the old ones did..so I've heard. I have never smoked anything nor had a smoker so if anyone can tell me if this would be worth my investment I would appreciate it. So....if I can afford it...I will have smoked turkey. Also, where does one get organic or at least farm raised turkey that has been treated humanely and is healthy? I live with a Walmart and that's all and that's 45 minutes away although I just found out a health market has opened up about a hour away in Mountain Home, AR. Maybe I should call them and see if they carry them or will be come Thanksgiving time. Needless to say I do a lot of shopping over the internet! You gals are SO inspiring! I will let you know as I firm up my menu. I do have fresh pumpkin that I grew though so that will be utilized for sure!

I was going to buy some mini pumpkins and write names on them as place cards since mine is a rather informal feast with friends....

Also, we have found that we like cherry-sauce basted turkey and chicken, and so cherry basted the glorious bird will be will be =)

Still thinking of pumpkin tiramisu for dessert

Hi Karla!
I hope your geese turns out grand!
We raise meat goats, so a bit of Goat Curry for Christmas Eve is definitely in order.

I am trying out other Indian inspired recipes to add to this ....Roti was on the menu for today....I learned a lot of "what not to do with Roti" (todays: flatbread filled with cilantro, califlower, ginger, ground cardimon, and green chili.

We slaughtered our first clutch of ducks in August and we'll have another round probably in Nov. so WE ARE HAVING DUCK FOR Christmas.

Hi,
I need some more ideas for a Pie Party. Has anyone ever been to one or hosted one. I read about doing a Pie Party, but lost the article. Fruit, veggie, meat pies for the party. Everyone brings a different pie and then share them for the meal.
Any ideas or information would be a great help. Have a good weekend coming up.
Thanks,
Bonnie

Angela, I made your honey pumpkin pie a few days ago and it was delicious! Thank you so much for the recipe. My whole family loved the pie and it got the thumbs up for Thanksgiving.

I'm the only one who loves pumpkin pie. This recipe makes it so smooth and silky and not too sweet. It was perfect!

Thanks again,

I, of course, am going to cook a turkey...what size depends on how many friends we have over...we live too far for family to come.
I may do a pork loin as well, with a dried fruit filling
Cornbread dressing ...lots!
homemade gravy
homemade cranberry-orange sauce
Haven't made up my mind on vegies yet
rich dark chocolate mousse, and either a baked custard or a pie...maybe both

And I haven't gotten to Christmas Eve and Christmas day yet!

I have my menu ready.

Turkey
Dressing
Green Bean Cassarole
Baked Butternut Squash
Mashed Potatoes
Corn
Peas
Homemade Noodles
Mixed Salad
Homemade Cranberry Sauce
Homemade Rolls
Honey Pumpkin Pie
Pecan Pie
Chocolate Pie
Apple Pie
Peach Pie
Blueberry Pie
Butterscotch Pie
Banana Cream Pie
Brownies

I'm cookin for a very big family and I have to have enough leftover for packagin up for home bound family. Plus if I don't have some left for the girls to eat on for the next week they'll never forgive me. I cooked a 24lb turkey last year and there was only enough left over for 3 quart bags for the freezer! I think this year I'm gonna see if I can get 2 15-18lb turkeys in my big roaster. It says it can hold up to a 34lb bird, so we're gonna test that theory! LOL!

I'm thinkin of switchin to cornbread dressing for this year since it doesn't require shellfish or organ meats. I think it will work out better than tryin to find something new that I'm not sure the family will like.

Mashed Potatoes
Sweet Potatoes - sweet
Sage Cornbread Stuffing
Green beans
Deviled eggs
Broccoli salad
Red Chile
Tamales - if I can get them done
Chocolate Pudding pie

Thanks for the recipe Angela. My Windy Pines cousin Michele sent me a jar of honey from her farm that I'll use for the pie. This looks delicious and I can't wait to bake one! I'll let you know when I do how it came out for me. I'm sure your husband will love his for his birthday.

Thanks again!

Here's the recipe for honey pumpkin pie!

Honey Pumpkin Pie

2 cups fresh, cooked, mashed pumpkin (or 1 16 oz. can)
¾ cup honey
1-teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon ground ginger
¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
¼ teaspoon ground cloves
3 eggs
1-5 1/3 ounce can (2/3 cup) evaporated milk
½ cup milk
Pastry for a single crust pie

In a large mixing bowl stir together pumpkin, honey, cinnamon, salt, ginger, nutmeg, and cloves. Add eggs. Mix well. Stir in evaporated milk and the milk; again mix well.

Prepare the pastry. Fit into a 9-inch pie plate. Flute edges forming a high rim to hold the filling. Do not prick shell. Place pie shell on oven rack; pour in filling.

Bake in preheated 375 degree oven for 55-60 minutes or until the pie is set. Cool before serving.

I haven't had the chance to try it yet, but I am goin to this week. We're doin the whole fall deep cleanin of the house thing right now. My Hubby wants me to make him a pumpkin pie for his birthday which is the 25th. We have plans for that whole weekend, so I'm gonna do the pie a little early for him.

Honey pumpkin pie? Sounds delicio9us too me! Can you let us know how it tastes? I would love the recipe. I love pumpkin!

Yes, I've caught myself daydreaming about Thanksgiving dinner. I always get a free range/organic one. It is pricey, but so worth the flavor! The rest of the meal is something I'm slowly coming up with recipes for. There is a Persian rice stuffing recipe I have for chicken that is out of this world. The author said she makes it for Thanksgiving instead of traditional stuffing & her American friends went crazy for it. It is fun dreaming about the holidays isn't it?

I am gonna make a honey pumpkin pie with a recipe from one of the farmgirls that was sent to me.

I will also be makin baked butternut squash instead of sweet potatoes, my girls like it better anyhow.

I am also on the hunt for a great dressing recipe that doesn't include shellfish or organ meats, I have some very picky family coming.

I have already started makin and freezin the homemade noodles. I have been practicin makin homemade rolls and the girls say I'm doin great, but they swear I need more practice. I heard them grumblin to their dad that the rolls at the restraunt last night were really bland. Yeah me! I put honey in mine and honey in the butter/egg wash for the tops.

My green beans are in the freezer just waitin to be a cassarole. By the way, if you put a cup of shredded cheese in your small, 2 cups in a medium, and three cups in a jumbo green bean cassarole your family will be beggin you to make it for every get together!

That's as far as I have gotten besides knowin that I have to have a turkey, mashed potatoes, peas, and corn. I have corn in the freezer and red skinned potatoes in the basement with the pumpkins and squash.

I have a huge supply of homemade jelly as well, but I always have that.

Does anyone know of a good rosemary and garlic dressing recipe?

Or anything I might be missin in my list here. I'm workin on a Thanksgiving dinner, that's my assigned holiday.

By the way, as for the pumpkin shortage, you can substitute butternut squash in almost all pumpkin recipes with nearly identical results.
