As I fondly remembered, told stories and shared memories with my boys last night while decorating the tree, we all agreed that our tree means so much to each of us because each ornament has a special meaning or a story behind it.

On our tree we have.....
...ornaments that I made
...ornaments that my boys made
...ornaments that others made for me
...ornaments given to me by my children
...ornaments given to me by my students
...ornaments given to the boys each year (I have given them an ornament every year since they were born)
...ornaments from my childhood, which includes my sterling silver bell teething ring
...ornaments that were my father's from his childhood (the Minnie Mouse ball is the most special)
...ornaments from vacations/trips/special places
...baby's first Christmas ornaments for all of them (bought by me and given to me)
...small baby toys belonging to the boys that they loved
...the cultural traditions, such as the spider web and the pickle

What's on your tree that makes it special to your family?

We are going to go next weekend when Truckin' Man and the grands are here. I want a real balled and burlapped tree to plant in the yard later. I have tons of nutcrackers. Great big ones all the way down to ornaments. I think I will do a nutcracker tree this year. My DD will use the unreal tree in her house and I'll let her and her kids use all the other ornaments on that. I acn't belive I even want to do this. It's amazing how I am feeling this year about decorating and making gifts and all the holiday stuff. Just a little Christmas miracle, I guess.

In some ways I take after my mother - I love Christmas. So over the years, since college I have collected ornaments. At one point I started sorting them into themes. So now I have 4 different themes (eclectic, celestial, garden/woodland and seashore) - I rotate each year. This year it is the "eclectic" tree - which is handmade ornaments, ornaments that were gifts, hallmark, etc. I put colored lights and bubble lights on the tree with a brass Old fashion Santa tree topper. This is DH's favorite tree because it features ornaments that were his Grandmother's.

I must tell you gals, this is such a delightful thread to read....
Growing up as a military brat, moving from 1 military base to another every other year, we traveled light,,,so we never kept much in the way of ornaments,,made lots of paper chains & stars etc....After DH & I got married we bought a fake tree & several boxes of bulbs.....but when our daughter was born I started decorating...at one point I was up to 7 trees of varying sizes & themes....I started the day after Thanksgiving...out came the boxes, the Dicken's Villages, trees, lights, lawn ornaments....we nearly looked like the Griswolds (Griswolds Christmas Vacation) but after moving up here to the country, we have parred back....I have a white tree in the living room and a small red tinsel tree in the kitchen....and lots of faux pointsettas & hanging crystle 'icicles' around the living room.
I have a fake tree because I have kitties, two of which are mischief mongers & will try to climb into the tree as well as chew on it..... but I did buy a potted live tree only 2' tall...yummmm' smells wonderful & is outta the kitties reach! lol!

I just thought of an act of Christmas kindness bestowed on us that year, 1994, when our house burned. The entire sequence of events in rebuilding was nothing short of a miracle. House burned July 17 and we were moved into our new, finished, bigger, DEBT-FREE house before Thanksgiving. And right after we moved in some ladies representing 2 different churches came with a HUGE, HUGE box with Christmas decorating items that had been donated by members of these churches. I was blown away . . . we are not talking about junk that was being thrown out!! That made our Christmas of 1994 even more special!! When I take those particular items out to decorate I am, again, blessed by that act of kindness.

We were all supposed to get our ornaments when we moved out, but neither I nor my siblings have.

I collect world globe ornaments. They are hard to find, but I have quite a few, so I do a "joy to the world; peace on earth" tree.

I also have many handmade star ornaments, so I also have done a star theme.

I have a box of hodge podge ornaments from growing up. Each year we would get a new ornament and I still have my very first every ornament from when I was a baby. We are slowly adding to the collection. Someday I would like to do two- a family tree and one with a theme!

I don't have my tree up yet, next week!! But.....each ornament is special. I have my mothers old red, silver, and pink metallic balls, old icicles, special ones given to us....my best buddy and I took Basic FF training, she gave me a crystal firefighter, also a couple of gardening type ornaments, when I was doing hair (30 yrs. ago), my customers gave me a Hallmark ornament each year, each special, each different!! The ones that came from diff. trips mom and dad took, hubby gave me one of a semi one year, as that's what he did for 47 yrs., and the different ones that I've made, not very crafty, but I love them anyway!!! This was a great idea!!

I really do love hearing about your ornaments and trees.

CJ, your story is truly amazing! Yes, wise men do seek Him and He so blesses us. What a treasure and testimony that ornament is!

Brenda, as I mentioned, I have given my children an ornament every year since birth for the very reason to give them a start on their first tree once they marry. It was funny, though, last night as we did the tree, my youngest said he did not want his ornaments to be on his future tree. He said they belong here on this one because it is the tree he grew up with, the tree that has his ornaments on it and he wants them to always be here on this tree. My middle one chimed in to agree with him. And here I thought I was giving them a start on their own tree as adults! But, if they want to keep those ornaments here, that is fine by me.

Farmgirls/Sisters, please let us know about YOUR tree and what makes it so special to you.

Well.... I have 3 trees! The outside front porch one is a nature tree, birds and birdhouses, pinecones, mini apples, beads that look like cranberries!
The upstairs tree is the play tree with leftover childrens ornaments from when my kids were small. These weren't given to any one child in particular, so I've saved them over the years, snowmen, teddy bears, little dolls, the grandchildren love it!
Our main tree is filled with all of my special ornaments. A few from when I was young, just a couple that survived from my Nana, ornaments my children made me, and my grandchildren have started making me. Ornaments that husband and I have received together over the years, including one that my aunt/godmother gave us for our first Christmas in 1978. Ones collected from our travels.
I had saved all of my childrens ornaments over the years, either ones I had given them, or my mom had, or special ones that they had made. As each married and left home, I presented them with a box full or ornaments to start their own family trees with. It is so special to me to go to their houses and see all their ornaments on the tree, and tell their children where each one came from!

I have quite a few ornaments that were from my grandmommy's sister, so very vintage AND Family heirlooms. I don't put them on the tree because they are too fragile, they will be in a nice bowl on my side board.

IN the tree I will put my pink and ivory items and the Christmas Angel topper mom and I bought yrs ago. That in ONE thiung that always will be in my tree.

I love to look around the house for any type of miniture to put on the tree. Also I use the McDonalds toys..that's recycling lol
there are lots of great ideas here!
I also find things to make out of the theme yoyos...or any type of yoyo. They also make good garlands or just hung with a ribbon like they are! Very country.

Everything on our trees (I put up two) is special, but there is ONE, SINGLE ornament that is SUPER, SUPER SPECIAL.
Many years ago I directed a children's choir at our church and we did a Christmas musical every year. One family who had two boys involved every year always made me something. One year our musical was "Wise Guys and Starry Skys" . . . they made me a beautiful ceramic ornament with a picture of the wisemen on it that said "Wise Men Still Seek Him", and their names on the back.
Well, when going through the rubble after our house burned down in July of 1994, I pulled this ornament out of the container it had been stored in. The container (I believe a Christmas tin) was destroyed, but the ornament was totally intact!!! It has survived a terrible fire!!!
I treasure that ornament . . . and the message is SO-O-O-O TIMELY!!
