Okay well since my mom has left home she took all of the decorations including our Christmas tree. I am now left to start over with nothing. Do any of you ladies know where I can buy some Christmas and Thanksgiving decor?? Like as in an online store?
I love decorating and I am looking for pretty much everything.

Ms. Mel, from one Melissa to another, keep your chin up girl! I just read your post and will be praying for you and your family, especially your Grandpa! What a trying time you are having! But your strength will only grow from overcoming these challenges. Now on to decorations!!! I LOVE felt! You don't have to hem it and you can sew it or use glue! Be creative and buy some squares of felt (like 20 cents each at a craft store or Walmart) in a ton of colors and go at it! I just cut up some old pink and white striped jammies today and turned them into little stuffed candy canes and heart ornaments. Both sew and stuffed with fiber fill. I'm also going to make a garland this year by knitting a super long I cord and adding some little sewn-on embellishments. I also saw this thing on Martha Stewart where she cut out two large tree shapes, sewed them together leaving the bottom open and then slipped the "cozy" over a 2-liter bottle of soda! It was super cute! She decorated the little trees in all different ways and made them in different colors and then she had an entire Christmas Tree forest on her mantle! I'm going to do that this year too! I'm going to be giving away some of the store bought ornaments that I have that don't mean anything (we bought them to fill up the tree when we got married and had no ornaments, now we have tons and too many to use) so if you'd like I can send you some of them. They are all store bought and a wide range of styles, but if you'd like some, you're more than welcome! Let me know and let us know how that soap-making adventure goes...I haven't been brave enough to try it myself yet!

There is a delightful book by Sven Nordquist called Merry Christmas Festus and Mercury. Festus is a man and Mercury is a cat. The story tells that it was near Christmas and festus went out to get branches for decorations. But his sled ran into a tree and he broke his leg. They had practally nothing left to eat in the house and their Christmas looked grim. Festus asked Mercury to get him the old broom handle and a drill and the branches. He fashioned a tree out of this. Mercury ran around the house looking for everything red. The goofy stuff they found, an old dried up paint brush, a carrot,a potato, newspaper ads, yarn, a spoon held on with the yarn, old toys,clothespins, thermometer, toilet paper rolls, a sock, etc. Wouldn't it be fun to see what you could come up with at your own house that you didn't have to buy! Put your thinking cap on and go girls go.

Well, this site can mother you a lot and answer many questions. My first advice is to stay focused on making as good a life as possible for yourself. At such a young age, do not get sidetracked into things that could could hurt your life further. Pray, and study, and keep your eyes on the right things.

hi, try looking on flickr.com for ideas for "handmade felt ornaments" or "felt ornaments" use those keywords to do your search on flickr.com
You can make some pretty cute and inexpensive decorations (garlands as well as ornaments to hang on the tree)

Yes it is very hard. I'm only 16 (well I'll be 17 in November). I feel like I'm 25 though. It's okay we will make it through just need some advice on alot of things since my mom isn't there.

If you have any of those "DOLLAR" stores around you, thats a good place to start. And if they are not just right, redo them yourself.

Think of it this way....you can decorate your home just like you want to from scratch! Have fun. And no need to spend a lot. There are many bargains out there, and you can hand make.
I read your blog and I am sorry your mom left. I hope you can find holiday things that will make you feel happier and that will make your home feel cozy. Praying for you.

When we first started out, we visited the thrift like Nancy Jo said, and I made a lot of my own ornaments.
Etsy is a great way to support other women who are homecrafting. :)
Another nice place to get them is current.com. They have lots of pretty things and if you hit the sale just right you can get a ton of stuff for next to nothing. :)

My thrift store always has lots and lots and lots of Christmas stuff. Do you have one near you? Good will, Amvets etc.

I always use real stuff for decorating when I can..... I go out to the woods and gather pine and cedar boughs, holly, ivy, berries, twigs, grapevine, pine cones, moss - anything that looks good! I use fruits, nuts, baskets, ribbons, etc. Incorporate what you have on hand, if anything - candle holders you like; boxes, baskets, tins, plates, crystal, platters....... let your creative mind wander.
I do use a few touches of artificial stuff though. It is so much less messy also. I like Hobby Lobby or Michaels for these things. Also - go after the holidays when stuff is on sale for 50%-75% off and stock up for a fraction of the cost! I do that every year. I save up money for shopping the crafts stores after Christmas. Happy decorating!

When I first started out, I bought a bunch of white lights, ornaments in 3 colors and some snowflakes. I have a fake tree and it was very pretty for not much $$$.

I would think etsy or artfire would me a good place to start or if you dont care if its not handmade you can look on ebay or craigslist. Happy hunting! Blessings,Karen
