Do you remember when Memorial Day was called Decoration Day? Well that was a looong time ago. As a kid I remember the older people saying that. It was a day to remember those who have gone on before us. A day to go to the cemetary and decorate graves. Remember it means something and is not just the first holiday before summer. Everyone enjoy and be safe.

Taking care of the veterans graves is an honor for me to do for Decoration Day.

I remembered "Decoration Day" this year by driving my 83 year old grandfather to Leadville, CO for the 10th Mountain Division memorial service at the memorial near Camp Hale. He is a WW II veteran and every year there's fewer of them around. We used to make it a long, fun weekend trip and meet up with his old war buddies, but this year only one other friend made it, and we made the 10 hour round trip in one day because the high altitude is so hard on him. I think honoring the soldiers of our past helps us honor the soldiers of our present.

Sure do--in fact, yesterday we went "up home" to where my mother was raised, near Columbus, Ohio and went to the cemetery to decorate the graves. Aunt Bernie still calls it Decoration Day, and I do as well...just what you grow up with, I suppose.

We put our flag out this morning, and will attend the VFW sevice tomorrow at Spring Grove Cemetery, a civil war era cemetery in Cincinnati.

Oh..we also watched all of Band of Brothers until 3 am last night (it's how Justin and I remember...)

Here, here Marybeth. Yes I do remember when it was called decoration day.
That we may honor those who have kept us free.
