Here is a way to give your tree a new lease on life!
Make tree blocks for your child or a neighbor
(just do a google search to see what I mean- this will give you an idea of what sizes and shapes you will want)
First cut the small branches off, the larger ones should be kept intact so that you can cut them along with the trunk to create angled blocks and bridges. You can cut thin (maybe 1/2 in) sections of the widest parts of the trunk to be used as platforms, plates, etc. Cut some at 1 in, 2 in, 4in and so on...
Once all the blocks are cut put them in the oven on a foiled cookie sheet and bake a 250 for a few hours (to kill any bugs and dry up sap)
Now just sand the ends and rub beeswax over the blocks to keep them nice (some companies sell special oils or wax that are all natural just for wooden toys)

(we only put up a 'feather tree' this year .. but when we cut some 'firewood' .. i'll try this project!)
