I got The Pioneer Lady's Country Christmas from the library today. What a great book. As I was thumbing through the pages I came across a recipe for Christmas Snow made from Ivory Flakes, water, and glitter. WOW -- what a memory that brought back. I can remember doing this as a kid in school and with my mom (in the 50s and 60s). We used it to decorate the branches of the tree and other Christmas decorations. Does anyone else remember doing this?
My daughter and I are going to make Christmas Snow this year to decorate our tree. I can't wait!

Some of my best Christmas memories are as an adult sharing our tradition of baking Christmas cookies together to give out as gifts. It's great to have a day together to bake and just visit over the mixing bowl. Two of my kids took part in the tradition with me this year and as you can see from the pictures, there was a lot of tasting going on!

I thought I'd revive this thread as one of our Farmgirls has asked what our Christmas or Holiday traditions are. The first joy for me is when we get ready to decorate the tree and start going through the boxes of ornaments. It is so much fun to pick one up and say oh I forgot we had this one. Then remember something about it. I have an ornament that Missy made when she was 5 (she's now 35). It is a styrofoam ball with a pipe cleaner hanger. The ball is covered with yellow and blue fabric. This particular ornament gets a special place on our tree every year and every year Missy tells me she can't believe that I still have it. One of our other traditions is sock stuff. Even after the kids get older and don't believe in SC anymore they still love their Christmas stockings. In fact, they'd almost rather have those than big presents. We usually fill them with dollar store stuff, a little candy, and a tangerine for the toe! What do you all do for your traditions -- Christmas, Hannukah, or whatever you celebrate?

Thanks Jenny for your kind words. Beth never undecorates the tree -- she just likes to sleep under it. When we put packages under the tree we have to be sure and not put any in her "spot". I love being the mom of girls. It is the best.

Beth looks so sweet...like she would never think of "undecorating" the tree like my cat Alice!!! My favorite cat ever (her name was Sylvia) looked alot like Beth...and she lived to be 22. Great cat! Stephanie is a doll...isn't being a mom of daughters great fun? I only have 2 1/2 years of experience at that...all my bigger kids are boys!! I never dreamed I would finally get girls..and I love it!

Here are a couple of pictures of our Christmas decorating. My daughter Stephanie putting ornaments on the tree and our cute kitty, Beth. Beth loves sleeping under the tree. As soon as we put it up she claims her spot!

I think I remember decorating pillar candles with this too but it's been so long ago I'm not sure. Here's the recipe.
1/2 cup lukewarm water
1/2 cup plus about 2 slightly rounded tablespoons of gentle soap flakes (preferrably Ivory Snow)
Glitter, optional
In a medium size mixing bowl combine water and soap. (Only gentle flakes or granules will whip up to a meringue-like consistency). Stir to dissolve, then whip by hand or with an electric beater until homemade snow looks like stiff meringue and holds its shape when spread along the branches of an evergreen tree. Dust with glitter if you wish. The moist snow will dry out overnight and cling tightly to the branches.
Make certain that children realize the snow is made of soap and should not be played with. Makes about 3 cups.

gosh..I had forgotten doing that too...we did it when I was really little..my mom loves a flocked tree and I remember how pleased she was when we did that. I wonder why she stopped doing it! Thanks for the memory!!
