I'm always thankful for any gift I receive, however many years ago that philosophy was tested. I recieved a used wallet from a family member that was a little short on cash for the hoildays. It gets worse. The wallet had tire tracks on it and it had actually been "run over" by a car(s)!! I'm not kidding! I knew about recycled gifts, but this was crazy! So I was wondering if anyone has a similar story to tell? What's your weirdest received gift? Hope this made you laugh. Now, 20 yrs later I can laugh about it! Happy Hoildays! Luzy

My husband bought me a silver plated bedwarmer one year... But usually I just get scissors from him... lots and lots of scissors.

edited: You know, once we are on the ranch, that silver plated bedwarmer may come in handy... It's a reproduction of an old colonial styled one apparently and it works, so who knows - but sure not looking forward to him saying he was right after all... LOL

My DH isn't very present giving oriented. On our first anniversary, 28 years ago, he bought me a hotdog cooker. You stuck the hotdogs between two prongs and plugged it in and the electricity zapped it, and then the hotdog blew apart! On our 25th anniversary, still poor as ever, I told him I wanted one of those diamond rings with the three stones in it. He presented me with a little box and inside was the very ring I wanted! It was from WalMart and cost $10. I still wear it! You'd a thought it would have turned my finger green or black by now, but it's still shining! He says he's thankful that I'm not a material girl! The worst gift I've ever seen was given to my sister when she was 16. Our uncle never saw us and had obviously lost track of our ages because he bought her one of those little sets of high heels, fake rings, and a plastic purse that a 5 year old girl would love. We all laughed so hard that night that we cried. She sent him a thank you note that told him the purse would be simply lovely to put her driver's license in.

Oh Katie-ell, that is so funny. It's amazing what people think up. Toilets on the table!!!

Once I got a pair of salt and pepper shakers that were shaped like toilets. Why would these even be made in the first place, much less be given as a gift??? I sent them off to a radio station running a 'my worst gift' contest the week after Christmas and won a fantastic dinner. So maybe that wasn't my worst gift after all!

One year I got a CD of Broadway showtunes from my Dad, who's really into musicals, etc. I'm not. I kind of set the CD aside (after thanking him, of course) but apparently forgot to gather it up with the rest of my haul. I didn't really care, and didn't think of it again.

Until the next Christmas when I got THE SAME CD. Not another copy, but THE SAME CD! It was out of its shrinkwrap and everything! He gave me the same thing again. Heehee! I still give him a hard time for it.

Every year we give each other zipper pulls. The first year I gave one to my daughter, I thought it was cute. It was pewter and had a Christian symbol on it. She has kidded me about that gift ever since, and so now each year I hunt for the worst zipper pull I can find and put it in her stocking.

Aunt Jenny that is hilarious...sounds like my MIL. I think I drive her plain mad with my "decorating". We just finished painting our living/dining room in warm cozy colors and the family loves it. My MIL says I have to develop a "sight line" that draws the eye..huh??? I was also TOLD to return the new light fixture I bought as tiffany would look better. I told her it was too expensive and I liked what I had. She said "well then I'll pay for it". Sheesh!!

Back on topic...funniest gift I received was a hayfork from my city brother the Christmas we bought our farm. Best darn gift I ever got!
Aunt Jenny Posted - Dec 05 2005 : 09:29:29 AM
my ex-MIL got me a pewter pin of a cow with little oval pearl udders swinging beneath..real cute. She didn't do it to be nice..it was a "dig" and she was so shocked when I loved it. Still have it. Glad I don't have to deal with her anymore though. She got some cute red overalls for me once..same sort of thing..and I wore them out..loved them. She was very exasperated trying to get my goat..haha.

My sister once got a sweat suit, the pants and matching jacket, from her Mother-in-law. She was pleased with this until she saw it was used and used to be her MIL's. Money wasn't an issue (doctor and his wife). My daughter's husband had a pierced ear and his grandmother, trying to be nice, bought him a pair of women's dangling earrings. Not what he had hoped for. My ex-husband wrapped up duct tape for me one Christmas.(notice,ex)

What is funny is that my grandma was so NOT a classy type..she was a very simple farm woman who was the oldest of twelve children. Her family moved to CAlif from Oklahoma during the depression and never had it easy. She helped raise all those brothers and sisters and then had two of her own and raised them (with my grandpa of course) on a dairy farm) she taught me everything I love to do and was so much more than a grandma to me. I miss her so much!!!
When I was little she worked as a substitute cafeteria lady and she fit the part perfectly...chubby with her perfect silver hair in a net and a big jolly smile. I called her Mom. We all did. My grandparents were Mom and Pappy. I am not sure the story behind the fancy purses..they didn't "fit" her at all. Maybe they were gifts from a prissy younger sister..she had a couple of those..or maybe she was different as a teenager..who knows. They sure are treasures though.

Luzy .. i adore childhood names that 'stick'. My own sweet sister was named Patricia .. and that is what the family called her until she named herself! She couldn't quite pronounce 'patricia' .. and what came out was: Shasha! And Shasha she is to this very day! unfortunately .. i guess i 'could' pronounce "FRANCES" .. but along the way .. friends shortened it to Frannie.

jenny .. you musta' had a classy grammie to carry beautiful beaded and silk bags. my grammie's probably used 'feedsack' hand-did purses ... ohhhh .. tell us some stories of your grammie!

p.s. how wonderful that you have her purses! 'family' heirlooms are the very best kind!

Yep, That's what my family calls me. My name is Luanne but when a neighbor saw me after my Mom and Dad brought me home from the hospital, he loudy proclaimed "Well here's our Luzianne" and the Luzy part stuck. First name is Martha, but was NEVER called that. Now I just use it for legal stuff. Lu

LUZY .. what a great name .. is that what you are called?

I must admit your wallet does sound like a 'road-kill wallet' .. and i would have wondered what might have touched it. My 'nannie' used to shudder when i would buy ANYTHING second hand .. lordy! she worried about the diseases i was gonna' get with my love for 'olde stuff'! hasn't killed me yet though!

Hey Frannie!! I have a little leather coin purse just EXACTLY like the one on the top picture you posted. My grandpa gave it to me years and years ago and he had gotten it from his daddy!! Wow. neat to see someone else have a treasure just like mine.
I will try to think of a weird gift I have recieved and post that later...I am sure there is at least one. Luzy..I am from a crazy redneck family too..you are for sure not alone!!

Ya Diane, She's still alive but most likely would'nt remember it and think I was the crazy one with a story like this!!! Or worse yet, wonder why I did'nt like her "thoughtful" gift. I come from a crazy rednneck family.

Reminds me of the movie Christmas Vacation with Chevy Chase and the crazy aunt wrapped up her cat as a gift! Guess I should have considered myself lucky....could've been lots worse!!! Lu

Is your Auntie still living? maybe you should just ask her about it...the story behind it might even be funnier...Maybe she thought it was "an antique" and that you would like it..I have gotten a few gifts like that over the years..mostly from my VERY thrifty relatives.
Luzy Posted - Dec 01 2005 : 12:25:34 PM
Naw Frannie, I promise you-you would not have wanted this hideous wallet. It was from late 60's early 70's not even leather. It was filthy and I'm sure they found it in a parking lot or worse. Creeps me out just to think about where it came from!! It's obvious my aunt didn't think too highly of me!! Even tho she did wrap it nicely. Could've just given me a big hug and said "Merry Christmas Luzy" Guess she was trying to make a point. BTW, your wallet/purse collection is wonderful. I have some old beaded purses.

Oh, and Lynn I'd love to get your family gift of an old ox yoke. Too Cool!! Bet You'll want to keep it. Lu

My mother still fills my Christmas Stocking. Instead of little toys, I now get travel sized personal care items. They really come in handy because I travel frequently. BUT, she always includes a package of paper toilet seat liners. I have a whole collection of them because I can't bear to carry them in my purse. I will admit, though, that there are sometimes when I really wish I had them with me!

We have something that gets rewrapped every year too! It's an old ox yoke. Nobody has ever given it to me, because more than likely I would keep it! Haha - they all know me too well!
