Posted - Nov 11 2005 : 9:06:16 PM Pack up a blanket, a favorite book or board game ... maybe some pretty pillows (in case you want to take a nap under a big autumn-colored tree) and go for a ‘country road’ trip to enjoy the changing of the ‘leaves’.
Pack a picnic basket with a jug of apple cider, some fried chicken and potato salad, or some big 'dagwood-size' sandwiches and a plate of cookies (be sure to look for roadside fruit stands for fresh apples .. or better yet .. find an 'U-PICK apple orchard .. use pretty cloth napkins in autumn colors … and pottery mugs and tuck in a couple cinnamon sticks to swirl in your apple cider! Or .. just some cheese, crackers and wine will do! Take your camera and/or sketch book too! And don't forget to bring along some loved ones and this can include the 'furry ones' in your home!
COLLECT ATUMN LEAVES and scatter them on your front porch to greet visitors .. find some BITTERSWEET to decorate your fireplace mantle with .. add some small pumpkins and gourds and branches of colorful leaves.
POT LUCK PICNIC This is such a great time of the year to gather friends and family for a ‘pot luck’ picnic. Set some tables and chairs OUTSIDE .. under a tree .. and ask everyone to bring their favorite dish to share! Use napkins and dishware in the shades of fall leaves and scatter some leaves on the table tops. You can also find a beautiful leaf for each guest and write their name on it with a marker pen … as a ‘place card’. Bag up little baggies of fresh fruit and cookies and a little toy prize .. tie them with red and orange and gold ribbons and hide them and let the children ‘hunt’ for these treasures Put each child's name on a bag and tell them they have to hunt until everyone has found their prize.
Make a PUMPKIN PINATA out of orange crepe paper and tape .. fill it full of candy .. and let the kids have a ‘whack’ at the pumpkin.
ROAD TRIPS There are lots of wonderful books that can be purchased or borrowed from your local library that lists many places to visit in or near your hometown .. and look ‘on-line’ for specific areas you would like to visit .. and in local magazines .. for special autumn events and fairs to take your family to.
Make a favorite pie or cake and take it to a neighbor who might not be able to get out too often because of age or health. Make it festive .. wrap it in cellophane and tie it up with festive ribbons.
TEA PARTY Gather a few good friends and set a sumptuous table with goodies … use your best china and linen napkins. Serve several selections of fine TEA .. and just enjoy an afternoon of goodies and gossip. (the good kind only!)
THERE ARE FEW HOURS IN LIFE MORE AGREEABLE THAN THE HOUR DEDICATED TO THE CEREMONY KNOWN AS AFTERNOON TEA.
FALL CLEANING Just like Spring .. Autumn is another wonderful time for ‘renewal’ .. the earth is putting to bed for the winter, many of it’s flowers .. so, too, is this a perfect time, for you to go through summer clothes and clean them and put them in a trunk or drawer to await next spring. Be sure to pack in a refreshing pot pourii with them. And this is a good time to also make a pile of nice clothes that you perhaps have … ‘outgrown’… for your favorite charity.
And at this time, too, you will be shaking out and cleaning those slightly heavier clothes and blankets for the on-coming chillier weather.
Take another look and add to the ‘charity’ pile the things that will only ‘take up space’ and not be worn or used this winter.
TREASURES This is also a good time to go through your kitchen shelves, your book shelves, and that tool shed to clean the things you will no longer want next year and to clear the things you will no longer use.
It is a little early yet for ‘winter hibernation’ .. but this is the perfect time to gather the goodies you will want to use for those cold, wintry days and evenings to be creative.
And don’t forget your Garden! Autumn is the perfect time for many plantings. Look at books and catalogues and on the internet .. talk with friends .. and especially, join the Circle of Friends Garden Club for all the information you need to set in place the makings of a most wonderful year-round garden!
