Posted - Aug 18 2004 : 6:23:39 PM Just thought I'd see how everyone is handling the mid-August dog days of summer... what with county fairs and getting kids ready for the school year, harvesting the garden, the last of the vacations, etc..... It's been a pretty slow chat week here, so I figure it's the all of above, or else everyone is glued to the tv watching the Olympics!
For my part, I've been watching a few Olympic events, but not much...might take in a county fair this weekend if it cools off a bit, harvesting absoultely delicious tomatoes and green beans, and wildfire watching (they are getting worse in our area)... and I'm on new grandbaby standby...
It'd be great to hear how y'all are coping too!

Posted - Aug 22 2004 : 2:19:37 PM Hallelujah!!! The cooler weather has arrived, at least temporarily and I am so grateful. It's been 90-100 degrees since May, and today it is 70. Blessed relief! And hopefully it will help the fire situation too. Thanks for sending us cooler weather Sherrie!

Posted - Aug 22 2004 : 1:46:39 PM After a very warm summer, yesterday we received a down-pour of rain. We really needed it as the lawns have turned brown and no rain just means easier for the trees to burn.
Today is much cooler, no rain and just nice "fall" like weather. Looking forward to fall....

Posted - Aug 21 2004 : 7:29:11 PM Good evening and hello,
Back from vacation tonight - I drove from W.Va. to NYS starting at 9:15 am and returning home at 7:30 pm. After unpacking, checked out the garden. We didn't get much rain in W.Va. or home, and the garden could have used some. The cucumbers are about done, lettuces are doing very well, picked some green beans but my tomatoes are not yet ripe. Lots of them though. We have relatives in Florida, but they are in NYS for the summer, haven't contacted them yet, and we're wondering how their place did in Florida; they seemed to be in the middle of the storm track. Looking forward to getting back into my routines here at home, planning for school, etc. My son will be in high school this year, so that will be a change for everyone (up at 6:30 am - that will be fun when the snow's flying). Believe it or not, I am already planning for Fall and Winter - my favorite seasons. Have to plan on stocking up the pantry, firewood (we partially use a wood stove), checking out a new used car, etc. Lots to do, lots to do.

Posted - Aug 20 2004 : 11:43:26 PM Good evening from Julian, CA! It's a really wonderful 62 degrees tonight, which is especially nice since I'm (still) canning salsa!! We've had a wonderful few days, but they say it should heat up for the week-end:( My garden remains pretty much pathetic. It was just a bad year for me. The fruit trees around are looking good and full. There are still a few mullberries available, and peaches too. The pears are coming on and those apples are just waiting for a few good cold nights! It looks as if some trees are starting to turn, but like Lori, it may be due to lack of water. Time will tell. I'm anxious to see the new issue...especially the braided rug part. My husband and I received a braided rug from his great aunt as a wedding gift (17 years ago) and it was doing great until the dog decided to chew it a bit. I hope the instructions can help in its repair. Clare, you're still in my thoughts as your fires loom. Jeannie, thanks for the link to the arts school. You girls take care. Sharon |

Posted - Aug 20 2004 : 10:23:44 AM good morning from Utah! It has been unseasonably cool all the last couple weeks here, and I am loving that..in the 70's the past few days..usually it is in the mid 90's in August!! And the garden still is growing, but slowing down some. I am going to soon have to cover my tomatoes at night unless we get our heat back! it has been in the 40's at night now. Feels like fall. I am still getting lettuce which is so thrilling! Usually by July the lettuce has given up, but the combination of where I planted it...shadiest place in the garden..lots of mulch and goat poop..it really has thrived this year!! And I need to make pickles today..the pickling cukes are really putting out now!! I am worried that it won't get sunny enough for the okra to ripen ...we will see. My kids won't be in school until Weds...3 of them still at home..all in elementary school...and I am looking forward to getting back to my routine more. I love this time of year in lots of ways!!

Posted - Aug 19 2004 : 08:49:56 AM Hi Jeannie, Sounds like you're having a good August! What style/pattern quilt are you making for your hubby? I have not tried quilting yet. Maybe one of these years!
The fires are continuing... lost two structures on Tuesday night and it's moving toward more populated areas now. I've heard predicitions from forest service personnel that it won't stop until further into the fall with cooler temps and rains. So, in the meantime, we deal with it. I have friends that are on level 2 evacuation notice... that's pack your bags and be ready to go. Not a fun way to live. For those that are interested this is the link for information: http://www.pnw3.com/fischer_fire/ Click on some of the photo links on the left to get a visual of the fire and smoke. I am glad that the hurricane victims aren't having rain, but it seems that other health issues are looming... like water quality, over-pricing, etc... as well as short tempers. Dealing with a major natural disaster is very trying.
Your vacation plans sound like great fun! And the folk school sounds so interesting. Wish we had something similar in our area.
My daughter is hanging in there. Her health problems seem to have subsided for the time being (gallstones-uuck!) and the longer the baby "cooks" in there, the better for him. It's those last little things to develop, like sucking motion and tear duct development, that make the first few months of life go much smoother. She has started to efface and is dialated slightly, with some contractions, but nothing that lasts or has developed. So, as one of my co-workers said yesterday, "He's on the runway ready for take-off, but stalled." He will arrive when he's ready. Thank you to everyone for your thoughts and prayers... I'm sure it has helped make a difference.
Make sure you pick up the Handful issue before you go on vacation, Jeannie. It is very good... perhaps the best so far? I really enjoyed the braided rug how-to section. I started doing this last winter and hope to pick it up again this winter, and got some good pointers from this article. I have read it cover to cover already... and probably will a few more times.
I'm glad you and your family escaped major hurricane damage, Jeannie. And good to know your grandaughter is back to being healthy. We do have one consignment shop here, but I have not explored it. I have sworn off holding any more yard sales and just find it satisfying to donate to Goodwill, and claim my tax deduction. Since I shop there, what goes around, comes around too.
Happy end of summer!

Posted - Aug 19 2004 : 06:30:59 AM Hi Clare, The dog days have really hit here in Florida, too. Since the tropical systems ripped through the state, it has been hot and humid, but thank God, not rainy....so folks can get things cleaned up a little faster.
My tomatoes are long gone, but are trying to make a comeback. I see that my favorite nursery has tomato plants in for fall gardens. Guess I should start some from seed, too. My peppers are doing great - I have four kinds and they are all producing really well. My cucumbers have little tiny snails all over them, so each morning I go out and hand pick the little buggers and throw them in some poison water I made in a bucket. Those slugs things can ruin a cucumber in no time flat....turn it to mush. I noticed that my old tomato plants do have some new blooms, and three that I planted a month ago have tiny fruits on them, so I am looking forward to more tomatoes. I love tomatoes!
I have an eggplant or two that are blooming now and some stray bean plants that are in bloom. Maybe.....
Still have not made it to Border's to look for the new magazine! Hopefully today. I am spending a lot of time in the cool house finishing a quilt I want to give my hubby for his 55th birthday in September. He commissioned it! :)
Was hoping the fires were gone and over! Hasn't it been a strange summer?
Our vacation is in September - we have reserved a log cabin just over the North Carolina line. 4 cabins on 25 acres - it is quiet, cozy, and in the mountains. Can't wait. It is also near the John Cambell Folk Art School, a very neat place to go and take classes in any of the things we all like on this board. Check out the website:

And lastly, how is your daughter feeling? You have to let us know when the big event happens! My grandbaby is feeling all better now and I am waiting for them to stop by this morning to pick up some veggies and some stuff we are gathering for the consignment shop. Do you have shops where you live that take your items and they sell them for you? We have great ones here - better than doing a garage sale.
