This is the best time of year for me because it is the time I collect for families and PAC centers. We are collecting for the triplets that have been in the news and so it seems like Christmas shopping and decorating comes early for me. I decorate ahead of Halloween a bit then get a build up until Christmas with decorations. I usually don't put a tree up until after Thanksgiving though, real or not.
I love the rope lights for outside because I can't get around like I used to after I crushed my shoulder. I have already started wrapping some and will be doing more very soon.
We send a lot of gift cards for the single parent families so wrapping and postage is sparse. I would rather they got what they needed and wanted anyway.
I have all my sites sat at Christmas right now and three of them stay that way all year round.
When my father was alive he always made it special, I don't remember a lot of gifts but the excitement and fresh baking my Mom did always made me love the times. When I was a little girl we had Christmas in Alsea, Oregon and it snowed very deep. All 11 of us kids went for slides down the metal barn roofs into drifts of snow and we rode our horses through the thick of it. We pulled ourself in sleighs behind the horses and made lots of snow angels. This town only had about a hundred people so we made up over 10% of it. What a wonderful time we had and oh how beautiful it was.
Montana is the only place coming close to being that pretty (Kalispell) and then Jefferson City, Missouri with the ice storms.
There I go again.
Christmas is awesome.
Hugs,
Pauline

Believe it or not, I sometimes get started before Halloween...not this year though. But the music starts in September. I have been watching some of my collection of Christmas movies already (my mom was here visiting for ten days & we quilted a quilt while she was here, so the movies were on during this time). I took down all of the Harvest stuff yesterday and over the next couple of weeks the Christmas magic goes up. In my studio I have Christmas stuff up all year. It just brings a smile to my face, so why not let it inspire me all year?
The reason I get started so early, is that I put up so much it takes me about 10 days to do it all, so I want to be able to enjoy it for as long as possible. It is alot of work! But so fun when it is done. Plus I can then concentrate on all of the fun things I want to do for the whole month of December, knowing my home is ready at any time for a visitor, or party. It is common for me to put up 8-10 trees, all with varying themes. A couple are six or seven footers, most are table topper sized.
Sadly, my grandchildren, who live in Alaska, will not be able to come down for the Christmas season. Having children around for all of the celebrating is so much more fun! But we'll have to do what we can to make it a good time anyway. My daughter who has moved back home is excited to get started with the decorating, so this will be fun. This gives me help me humping boxes up the stairs from the Christmas storage room. YES!
I DO LOVE CHRISTMAS so very much...can't wait to get going on it! I'll post photos on my blog when I get it up.
Merry Christmas Everyone!!!

Pamela

I start usually by the first of December - usually christmas lights and the outdoor wreath/decorations. Then I move in with the garlands, stockings, santa collection, etc. We usually get our tree 2 weeks before Christmas - due to 3 cats and limited space. This year I am getting out the celestial ornaments for the tree - yes I have theme trees - enough themes to have a different tree every year for four years. I am addicted.

I start the day after Thanksgiving, as Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday of the year. Food and Family no gift buying. We hang our tree upside down from an antique pulley. We also take a motorcycle with a side car to cut it down. In years past I had to drive so all the kids could take turns. Not so any more. Someday maybe grandchildren. Just got my fall decorations out for Thanksgiving not quite ready for Christmas stuff.

Oh, Robin, your story about the tree falling over cracked me up...sounds like something that would happen at my house:) I love Christmas trees and looking at them with the lights off and only the tree lights on....last year we put our tree in front of the bay window in our previous home and turned all the inside lights off...and also had the back porch light on to give the outside just a touch of light...and it was so pretty because it was snowing ... so perfect, so Christmassyyy....Erica:)

We'll put our tree up and inside decorations the Friday night or Saturday after Thanksgiving. Probably put the lights up outside next week sometime while it's still warm enough. But we'll not turn them on at night until after Thanksgiving. There are a few homes near me that have had their outside displays up and going since last weekend.

I have a Santa collection that I add a few to every year. I've been displaying them on my top kitchen shelf since I moved here. The shelf goes around half my kitchen. This year I'd like to move it to my living room, I'm looking for an inexpensive window table with two shelves to put them on this year. I just love decorating for Christmas and I'm getting really excited.

Y'all's ideas sound great -- I especially love Jonni's arrangement of antique toys, etc., on her quilt rack - I can "see" it in my mind! It's just so hard to be in stores right now and not want to come home and drag all the holiday stuff out!!

I have a pie safe that was my Mother's, and I'm going to put either her Desert Rose china in it (or a set of melmac dishes with pink roses we found this summer - all in the original package & everything!). I bought pretty rose colored Christmas ornaments and some rose colored tulle, and my partner just told me she ordered me some pink twinkle lights to use in the display too!!! I'm SO looking forward to setting up this display...

And especially this year, I am looking forward to unboxing the adorable primitive trees my Daddy cut for me out of pine so many years ago. Every year I've set them up with my Christmas displays. They are extra special this year, because we lost Daddy in March. But having been blessed with him in our lives for so many years is another thing we are all thankful for this Thanksgiving season.

Please continue telling us all about your favorite Christmas decorating ideas!!

Hugs,
Norma

I usually wait until the 1st of December...it's just that I like to give all holidays their "due"...I keep my halloween things up until November 1, and then the harvest stuff comes out and stays until the end of November.

I am trying to SLOW time down, and I guess working retail all those years makes me wanna hold off Christmas until I have to :)

We usually get our tree 2 weeks before Christmas, just because with 4 dogs and 3 cats, the longer it's up, the longer we have to keep picking up ornaments ;) We put in the living room, and I just love seeing it lit up from the street. Before the tree goes up, though, I get out all my window candles and those kind of "cozy" decorations--vintage christmas cards, and all the wreaths and greenery, too. This year, mom is getting me my favorite live wreath of juniper, so I can't wait til that comes...should be here after Thanskgiving. I have a faux pheasant, cardinals and white doves that I put up on top of my quilt rack with an old tinker toys cannister, soldiers and pull toys. I put out all the winter pillows and afghans, which will stay until springtime comes.

Today, it feels more like Autumn than it has since it finally got cool...I think I'm going to cherish it while I can!

Oh my, I love Christmas and decorating. I live in an old farmhouse that has been remodeled, when we were looking to buy I told my husband that it was perfect I could have a tree in every room. That was in April and he had forgotten by the time Christmas came around. We have 12' ceilings and the main tree was so big that it touched the ceiling. It was an absolutely huge tree. It was so much fun decorating, and afterwards I sat down with a cup of hot chocolate and looked at my tree until I fell asleep. I woke up to the tree falling in the floor. I was so upset I cried and cried. I only lost 1 special ornament and then a few cheap easy to replace ones. We got it back up but had to wire it to the wall. My husband did not think that I would want another big one, well three years later I still want one just as big. I can't wait to start decorating, I usually start the weekend of Thanksgiving.
Have fun decorating!!!
Hugs,
Robin

I've already been bringing bits of winter/holiday/christmas decor down from the attic and in from the outdoors! I've got some candles in the windows, and some pinecone decor going on...I also have a cute nature santa with animals under his robe...but he stays out all year, just in a more obvious place now...

I always decorate the day after Thanksgiving too. Otherwise it seems to early. Especially since retailers seem to be cramming Christmas down out throats earlier and earlier every year.

Oh, Norma, it is so nice to hear that someone else gets that Christmas Spirt going early!!!
I usually decorate the weekend after Thanksgiving. I don't know how it will work this year though b/c we are taking up the carpet in the livingroom that weekend. But some sort of Christmasing will take place that weekend!

Actually, I do have a Christmas snoopy that I bought at Hallmark out already!

Hi Norma and gals,

I too am having the bug to decorate earlier than usual this year. This sudden urgency on my part is because I am feeling like time is moving way too fast...I love fall, and by the time it cooled off here Halloween was upon me, I mean the day it got cold it was Halloween and I didn't get to enjoy the beauty and benefits of colors and hiking this year....now Thanksgiving is a week and 1/2 away and I feel like I am going to miss it...not that I will, but with all that goes on in a day...I feel like I don't have the time to enjoy the moments leading up to Thanksgiving...and then it would normally be time to decorate the weekend after Thanksgiving, so I am having this urge to do it now so I can enjoy the process and truly enjoy the weeks before X-mas having a decorated home....because I still have to make gifts, go shopping and bake for Christmas...I don't know ...it just seems to go by faster and faster every year and I want it to stop and slow down so we can all get back to the essence of the holiday.

The holidays for me that are the most heartwarming and wonderful are not the actual days themselves, ecspecially Christmas, but the time leading up to it....When autumn arrives I like to fully enjoy the changing of the leaves, the cool crisp air, the rotation of holidays and all the activities that go with it....that is the best part to me....the day of Christmas always feels over before it even begins once the children open their gifts...and that is sad to me. So, I am trying to figure out a way to pull it all together and love it with all my heart and savor every moment....before it all passes me by:) Erica:)

we decorate the weekend after thanksgiving. we go get a tree form the same lot every year. Rob and Grace go along with Rob's dad and pick out all of the family trees, totaling 7. Dusty uses the trailer I imagine to haul all of the trees down the th twin cities. Only ours stays here. lol. This year we are clearing out the dining room table since we no longer have room in the living room for a tree.

We usually start the day after Thanksgiving & sometimes that night. I have already started listening to Christmas music they are playing on the radio here. Puts you in the mood for sure. Nice to have it be peaceful too before things get too busy.
