Are any of you going to make Ginger Bread houses for the holiday season? If so, are you going to make the permanent or eat them? Do you buy kits or make your own?

When we lived in VA we always got together with other homeschoolers and made gingerbread houses for one of the local hospitals. We then delivered them, asking the hospital to decorate the pediatric floor/rooms with them. It was very rewarding.

We have a place here called Gingerbread University and you can make the houses there for any season. My daughter and I are going again this December and we both bring a friend. It's a great time. My daughter is 20 and still loves it. Maybe her boyfriend will want to come. He is fun like that too. |

My daughter and I made them the year I was in Boise, 1972. Tried to save them, but the ants got into them before the next year. If I ever come across the photos, I'll share them. Lots of fun. Lori was 10 and it was a very cold winter, so kept us occupied for several days making and decorating. Used the recipe in Good Housekeeping and still love to see the winners each year from their contest.

I bought one the year before last, and then bought a kit to do one last year but ended up not making it!!
I'm not sure about this year yet, but now you've put the idea in my head... ;)

Mine is a Marth Stewart recipe. Not sure which book it was in. I have all of them packed. Sigh... Anyway it worked and it smelled awesome. We did not eat this house. No way after all that work we kept it as long as possible, LOL

Hi,I made a permanent one,well sorta it lasted about 2 years.I blame myself,I didn't pack it well enough and it crumbled!This year I'm using insulation foam sheets,and caulk as my base house and cover it will pretty things.
I'll also make an edible one with my 5 year old,Samantha too. Making GH's are so much fun!
Girls,your houses are amazing! What base recipe did you all use?

one year me and the kids made the permanent gingerbread houses that you can get at Michael's arts and crafts..the ones that are made from a foamy type material with little fake plastic candies that you can glue onto them...we display them every year..they have held up very well and we'll probably add to the collection this year if we can find a train and other fun items.I love decorating for Christmas..and the kids get involved alot with helping to decorate the house.

Hey there I made a huge gingerbread church last year for Christmas. I plan to make another this year not sure if it will be as big or not. Last years was probably 18' at the highest point, and 18 inches long. I have a picture of it and I will post it on my blog under the bakery page. The link is on the right side of the page.
