I've been away for a bit (late summer is so busy here!) but I'm back and in a autumnal mood as it's finally cooling down and the leaves are just beginning to turn.

I ended up using discarded/thrift shop clothing so she ended up being life-sized, on a real broom, on a utility pole on our farm. I just wish I could set up a camera to catch teh expressions of people coming down the long driveway toward her! I think i have photos, will try to find one and post it here.

Everyone's decorating sounds great. I really like the folk art vintage-y stuff, as well as your basic country decorating-- pumpkins, gourds, hay bales, scarecrows. I like warmer colors this time of year also-- moss greens, browns, burgundy as well as texture like cables and corduroy.

I put pumpkins and gords on the porch and change out my spent summer annuals to kale and mums. This summer I purchased a wooden basket made out of an old pepsi cola crate, so I will probably fill that with mini pumpkins. Inside I put more gords and mini pumpkins in rustic baskets and I recently got hooked on some unique old style halloween figurines. I put those out just before Halloween to give it a festive look.  ]

I love mums, but I tend to kill everything that I can't sew, crochet, or paint..:( I can, keep pumpkins though. lol Your porch sound beautiful Mary Jane!

I put pumpkins and mums out on the front porch, I make a kind of display, with some mums up higher and some lower with pumpkins and gourds mixed in. I also put tiny 4" mums in the flower boxes. I have a fall wreath on the door. Inside I add fall touches with some wooden pumpkins and fall decorated tins and tiny Indian corn accents with leaves, some fall throws and pillows and lots of candles. I add a few Halloween touches then take them down and add the Thanksgiving things
A big turkey tureen and matching salt and peppers on the table and fall placemats. A pilgrim man and lady and some redware with pumpkins and leaves on it. I LOVE Fall and all the good things that go on and of course lead right to Thanksgiving my favorite holiday and then on to Christmas. Mary Jane

I usually set up a couple of bays of hay/straw with large potted mums, and then pumpkins when they are in, around our River Burch tree.
On the front door, I put my halloween wreath, and inside, I take out all my simple spring/summer things (rabbit items, egg items, nests, etc...) and replace with all types of pumpkins, fabric, porcelain, ceramic, autumn colored candles, gourds, etc...I change out throws and pillows on the sofa, adding richer hues and textures, and warmer blankets for chilly nights coming. In the kitchen, I take out all my autumn bakeware and tureens (pumpkin tureen = curried pumpkin soup!!!)
I also put a quilt out in the porch swing, and cover and take off cushions from all the summer furniture.

As soon as school starts, I begin feeling the urge to get creative. I finish up any last minute projects and pull out my fall decorations around the end of Sept. For Halloween, we always have a graveyard in the front yard and last year we added the skeleton that sings a creepy song if you walk by the tombstones. We also decorate the house and put other things outside. Around the 1st of Dec., we start getting out our ton of Christmas decorations. My husband is really into doing the yard up! We always try to get one new thing each year to add to the Christmas decorations. It's always so fun to see everyone's faces when they ride by the house. My husband put up lighted arches last year that went across the road. The neighbors loved them! Anyway, we have a blast decorating during the holidays.

Around the first day of fall, which is Sept 23rd, I think, this year, I start getting out all my Fall/Halloween/Thanksgiving stuff and initially will just set up the Fall stuff..like hale bales, pumpkins, scarecrows, leaves etc. Then a few weeks before Halloween, I add a few Halloween items to the existing Fall displays and let the kids add a cemetary and all the good stuff for Halloween. A week before Halloween we carve our pumpkins and have them set around and lit at night. After Halloween, we put away all Halloween stuff and rearrange the Fall items to be out till Thanksgiving....it is so fun for all of us and I make sure my kids play in active part in the entire process. Last year we had our first Halloween party and it was a hit!! This has always been my families and my favorite time of the year...and it is even more special because there is a continous flow of events leading up to Christmas...Erica:) |

I used to cut vine maple branches from my woods and put them in the corner of my covered porch and set a scarecrow on a bale of hay in front of it. We don't have a covered porch or woods where we live now, but I will try and come up with something. |
