Let's keep VA Tech students and their families in our hearts following today's tragedy. All the students, whether they were directly involved in this or not, will be affected by it forever. So will young folks in all formerly peaceful places who may now start to wonder if they're really safe. Let's help them to be.
It seems everyone in my town has somebody at Tech; from one end of Main Street to another, everyone's out in spite of horrible weather, asking around, "Are the twins okay? Did you hear yet from Katie? Was Seth on campus this morning?" A lot of Tech students are there to learn what they must know to keep agriculture alive and thriving in Virginia, or wherever else their lives may lead them. Many of them are our future farmers, custodians of the harvest -- to be shamelessly poetic about it -- on which the health of our children and grandchildren will one day depend. I know you join me in wishing that today's experience won't diminish their dreams. |

Ok. At the risk of someone getting upset with me, I think it also needs to be said....I've been reading so much news today, so many stories and quotes about this student (Cho)..Nikki Giovanni stated that there was an inherent meaness to him, among other things....but nagging in my conscience are his parents. For the last 24 hours, imagine how difficult it has been for them, now, with the terrible knowledge that he caused this; trying to wrap their minds around what their son did, was apparently capable of. Then to read, hear, watch all of the things people are saying, writing, discussing and analyzing about their son, deserved or otherwise. He was their son no matter how terrible. Could they have seen signs, maybe..we didn't live with them. Culturally, do they address "issues" the way we do, "let's talk about it"....I don't know. I just hope that,like the Amish opened their hearts to the family who's husband committed that terrible school shooting, I hope someone is showing his family compassion as well.

Rosemary ~ Thanks for your post. As soon as I heard the news, I got to the forum to hear from our Virginia farmgirls. You are all in my thoughts and prayers...breaks my heart that this would happen and I am sending extra strength to all of Virginia Tech and everyone that this horrible tragedy has touched.

It is certainly scary when something like this happens. I saw it this morning and was so shocked and horrified - what has happened in that young man's life to make him do so a thing? All the students, their families and all our Virginia Farmgirls are in my thoughts.
