It's been forever since I've had time to visit MJF's site, but came to look at products and decided to stop by and chat a bit...

My daughter just turned 7. Recently she's been wanting to be a "Fashion Girl" and buy a sewing machine so she can start learning to sew and become a fashion designer when she grows up....I'm cool with that, she's going to be tall and thin and she could probably be a model if she wanted to.

This past weekend she had a sleepover to celebrate her birthday, and someone gave her a set of binoculars. They all decided to go outside and see if they could find the alligator in the lake behind our house, but he's still been hiding since it's not gotten super warm yet. So she's decided that she's a "Nature Girl". My son was pulling off the dead pieces off the trunk of our palm tree in the front yard and she started hugging the tree and saying he needed to be nice to it. (Of course, he wasn't doing anything to hurt it, but it was too cute of her to think that way.) So this past weekend she decided that she wants to become a vegatarian and not eat meat because she doesn't want to kill animals for her food. I thought it was pretty cool. I'm not a vegetarian, I grew up on a farm and have no problems eating meat, but I will definitely support her decision.

Yesterday for school lunch she got a salad with chicken tenders in it. (They're required to take the meat if it's part of the entree.) She ended up eating the chicken because "it just tastes so good", but she was a bit upset that she had too. Today they had nachos and she didn't eat the meat and was soooo proud of herself. It's just kind of neat to watch a child this age becoming aware of the world around her and making decisions based on her on conscious.

Her food choices are good for our family, I love eating food from the vegetarian section of the store, now there's more of a reason to do so....

That's how I ended up heading over here...need to check out the ChillOver powder since Jell-O has animal by-products in it...

Katee-

How are things going? I am interested to hear if your daughter is still interested in sewing her own clothes and is she still a vegetarian? She sounds like a great Farmgirl in training!

Ciao

Ha!! She sounds like me at that age. I used to climb to the top of the tallest tree I could find and survey the land and pretend I was going to save it from destruction. It is also when I got into animals and how they are treated. I was a vegetarian from age 12-18 and very proactive in my choice. When I was 20, I donated everything I didn't need to the local no kill shelter for their yardsale to raise profits and my mom was about to kill me but I was leaving for the Navy so no biggie to me and it helped some little creatures.
I say just let her find her way with a gentle hand and she'll be alright...

I was thinking about that. But I'd hate for her to decide she wants meat one day and them tell her she can't have it either. I'm going to wait and see how seriously she takes this before I start requesting them to provide her with an alternative. They have PB&J every day, so she can opt for that if she needs to. They have several days where they have no-meat options. Today they had cheese quesadillas, for example.

She's pretty set on it. Kind of cool.

Awww...hats off to your daughter! Just in case you didnt know and IF you want to take this further, a letter to the school explaining that she is vegetarian obligates them to not serve her any meat and in some schools (military schools but am not sure about civilian schools) this means they have to provide meat subtitutes if you request it. I have never done this (required meat substitutes) so I dont know how well it works but I was raised vegetarian as was my mother and my kids are being raised the same so thought I would let you know since I have dealt with this a few times . I know it can be hard having both in one house (my DH is very much a meat eater, the rest of us arent) so I wish you the very best!
