Dh had orthoscopic surgery this past Tuesday -- torn miniscus (sp?), bone spurs, etc. -- and is doing really well. He only took 1 pain pill the first day, and only because the doctor said to to head off any pain. Yesterday he had his first therapy session and they told him he'd probably need one last night, which he did. He said it wasn't bad pain, but enough to keep him awake, so he took one. Sore today, but no pain. Very little swelling, too, which is wonderful. All in all, an excellent experience, if you have to have one!

I just thought I'd mention, especially for those of you who are younger, that the orthopedist told us that most knee and other ortho problems are hereditary (almost all of the other cases are caused by injury). He said that many younger people could head off problems by listening to what their parents complain about and, if joint problems are an issue for them, head off problems for themselves by taking Glucosamine (it's in the vitamin section). He told dh to take Glucosamine with Chondroitin. I did a bunch of reading and talked to several pharmacists, and they agreed.

Both of my children -- one almost 21 and the other 18 next month (oh, my baby will be 18, wow!) -- already have knee pain when tired or after exercise, etc. DD started taking the Glucosamine Wednesday, and I bought a bottle for ds to take back to college.

It's a bit expensive, but from what I've been reading (Prevention magazine, online sources, etc.) this works really well for many, many people. Some people sget no relief using it, though, and the doctor and pharmacist told me to give it 3 months to see a change.

Anyway, I thought I'd share this with you ladies, especially those who may be able to head off potential problems. DH is 45 and the doctor said he has the knee of a 60+ year old -- ouch! He told us the other knee will probably need work within a few years and that dh is a prime candidate for total knee replacement somewhere down the line, earlier than most.

Some people search for happiness; others create it.

My mom just sent me a bottle of it a few days ago and I started taking it. I have one real bad knee from wiping it out a few times over the years (skiing, horseback riding, softball and slipping on ice and tripping over my own feet) and last exrays last spring the doc said I have arthritis in it now..sigh. She said it helped my brother alot with his knees and so I am trying it. I am glad to know it has helped some of you. She stuck the bottle in with my son's birthday gift..and he was very puzzled until I remembered that she had said she would be sending me some.

Excellent information. I have been trying to get Dh to take it for a long time. I think I will have him read your post! Glad your hubbie is doing well.

I've taken Glucosamine for years, first learned about it through my horse and vet. When we were putting together educational seminars around our area, I did quite a bit investigating. From what I understand, once the cartilage is gone, it's gone. Cartilage cannot regenerate. The glucosamine helps strengthen the protective covering surrounding the cartilage, etc. keeping the lubricating fluid intact. Non-impact exercise is recommended as it keeps the fluid active and moving. Think of your joints as a sponge. When you bend the joint, you are squeezing the sponge and the fluid, when you straighten the joint, you are replenishing the fluid.

I take only Glucosamine...it is the building block to chrondroiten and, for me, offers the same benefits as taking the combination. I don't notice the effects so much when I'm taking it...but I do notice if I stop. The knees in particular become creaky and weaker.

I'm heading south for the winter. Some parts of my body already have a head start!

Great info, Patti; I am forwarding it on to my basketball "star" youngest son, 25! Glad your hubby is coming along so well. Take care, Nance

Patti, glad to hear your dh is doing great. My husband has had both knees replaced. He still has trouble with them. But then again, when you are as OLD as he is something is bound to break or hurt.heehee
Know that I use glu. with my horses and goats and love it. Will have to try it with dh. Wonder if he can take the animals , all I need to do is reduce the dosage, right?hmmmmm.

Great reminder! The gluc/cond is good and getting low-impact exercise is good (swimming, yoga). And the gluc/cond is great for dogs too!

I second that. I tore my ACL twice while in high school and college cheerleading. Since then I have taken Gw/C and as a runner, I could not do without it. Ithink it saved my knee many times from being torn to shreds during 1/2 marathons and the Twin Cities Marathon.
