Posted - Jan 23 2013 : 12:59:19 PM Gals, I know I can count on you-- My mother and her neighbor have been dear friends since we moved to town in 1977. They found they share the exact same birthday and birth year and also the same wedding anniversary. So, they're both turning 65 this weekend and the neighbor, with the help of some friends at church, is putting together a little celebration. I've been put in charge of flowers and tablecloths, appetizers and cake and that's completely under control.
BUT, my mother just phoned me and said that her neighbor's daughter in law and SON have suddenly decided they can't make it (and they were going to make all the "major food", as well as game stuff, memory board stuff, etc...). Nope, don't get me started on "why" they can't suddenly make it because it will only cause me to spin my wheels or ring them up DID I MENTION THE PARTY IS THIS SATURDAY????
I can't just let these two gals have a party without something memorable. I just looked up "fun facts" about the day/year they were born and the famous (and infamous) folks they share this day with, and I planned on putting those on tables where folks could read while eating and chatting, but what else?
I know you'll have some ideas because frankly, I was struggling with appetizers to make for 40 and just kept hitting a brick wall with "too boring" "too cheesy" "done too often"...

Posted - Jan 25 2013 : 12:23:51 AM I'm 65, can I play? The 1950s was a little before our time -- we were just little kids back then. The high school years (1962-65) for my age group was dominated by the Beatles and folk music -- think Joan Baez, Peter Paul & Mary, hootenannies and such, along with the usual rock-and-roll. But burgers and fries? You bet! Pizza, too. And hot dogs, naturally. Cokes, naturally, and other soft drinks. Comedians were all the rage -- everybody owned records made by Bill Cosby, Bob Newhart, Tom Lehrer, the Smothers Brothers, and dozens more. Clothing was preppy. Sadie Hawkins dances were popular -- the only time outside of gym class that girls could show up in school wearing pants! Cars had fins and drive-in movies were a big deal on Saturday night. Oh, you're going to have some fun! :) |

Posted - Jan 24 2013 : 05:43:18 AM You girls rock! My head had already gone to the crockpot and THEN my head went to the era that they grew up in, chili dogs, ice cream bar, that sort of thing--I'm already doing "updated" versions of 1950's era appetizers and I sure wish I had been in charge of the "food" before hand because given a little time, I could be really dangerous (and I wouldn't have backed out).
What with the time that I have, I think crockpots are probably the way to go--I can even do chicken that way.
Emily Anna, thanks for your offer to help--the party starts at 6 pm :) I have enlisted some local charges, my friend Luke and his wife, who love to cook and will whip up a brisket so you can just come and enjoy the party :)
Again gals, thanks so much for these ideas. I will probably save myself some time and sanity by getting premade salads like the potato and slaw, but there are some good local deli's and I don't mind giving myself a little "way out" that way.

Posted - Jan 24 2013 : 02:31:29 AM How about doing a bit of a theme of the era of growing up and maybe the kinds of foods, like hotdog/ice cream shop.

Posted - Jan 23 2013 : 8:17:12 PM Boiled dinner. Ham , potatoes, turnip, carrots, onion cabbage. If you're not on a tight.budget go with corned beef. Make or buy some.crusty bread. Crackers cheese and veggie platters for apps.if you've never had this it's not hard to make just boil the Ham till it's about 45 mins from being cooked through then add the veggies startingwith the cabbage then carrots turnip, potatoes saving the onions for last (boiling onions or Pearl ones) . Very new England very flavorful. If you use corned beef it has to be thoroughly cooked through unlike Ham.

Posted - Jan 23 2013 : 7:17:41 PM Joni, how about bbq briskit with a potato and salad bars. As far as going down memory lane------school year books, making a CD that you can run with pictures of your mom and her neighbor when they were growing up, you could usually do this on a computer or walgreens. Hope it helps. Laurie

Posted - Jan 23 2013 : 2:22:24 PM Not sure exactly what you looking for but..... I'm thinking with the super SHORT NOTICE, you might want to think crock pot. I like taking beef, cooking it in the crock pot, shredding it up, and adding red and green peppers and onions (usually I add this maybe half way through the meat cooking time). So good and we usually put pepper jack cheese or mozzarella and serve it on some good buns. Or something like throwing a bunch of boneless country spare ribs in the crock pot, breaking it up when cooked, and putting some BBQ sauce. If you're thinking cold sandwiches and want something different, sometimes I make this chicken waldorf salad that has chicken, red grapes, pecans, red onion, celery, and mayo. It sounds scary, but it is good! You can eat it as a salad or put it one some good bread for sandwiches. Maybe have some salads like there is that cauliflower and broccoli salad with the mayo type dressing. On pinterest I saw a recipe for antipasto kabobs which had olives, salami, tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, and a dressing but that would be more like an appetizer, which you are good on.
Ooooor to make things easier since you're in such a time crunch you could do a mexican bar with all the fixins for tacos and chicken fajitas. If you go on Pinterest (yes.....I love Pinterest!) you can find a recipe for crock pot fajitas. Or you could do a pasta bar. I think something like that might be your best bet money and time wise.
Sheesh, girl....I hope you have some help! That's a lot for one person to do!! If I lived closer, I would love to help!
Emily

Posted - Jan 23 2013 : 1:12:42 PM OOps, just saw it was for 40. A few flank or iron steaks might not be too bad.

Posted - Jan 23 2013 : 1:10:45 PM Jonni What kind of major food do you need?? How about a couple of marinated flank steaks (unless it is a ton of people) If other people are bringing food, how about having each bring a few salad toppings & you could make a huge spread with mixed, good lettuces, along with toppings, kind of a New York chopped salad thing, along with flank steak & some Shadeau's bread. Of course if you have 100 guests, that might be pricy.
