Just last week I was crying on the phone to my mother about not being able to go up to Portland to see her. She is down from Alaska for a long-arm machine quilting conference. I only live three hours away and haven't seen her since 2009.

She emailed me yesterday and is able to change her ticket and fly to Eugene which is A LOT closer than PDX, as in only an hour away. She will stay a couple of days.

The only catch is she is coming late Saturday evening and I will have to drive up after having ridden in to my husband's elk camp and back out for a six hour ride and four hour drive. But I will get to see her.

Also my daughter is here from Corvallis and will get to see her grandmother (and help me drive to Eugene).

Then I get a phone call from my brother, who also lives in AK and whom I haven't seen since 2009), and he and his family are in CA because his father-in-law is very sick or has already died. He didn't say on the phone. And they want to stop for a night on their way through.

Whew.

So what about mangos and hobos?

I had a great weekend. My brother's two boys are horse crazy and they got to ride in our pasture and loved it. Later during dinner preparation they serenaded us on their banjo and guitar, both self-taught.

My daughter, friend and I had a great ride in to see my husband. No elk yet.

Got my mom. She stayed until yesterday afternoon. It was refreshing to visit with her.

Thanks. I am going to make elk steak with mashed potatoes and gravy, steamed carrots and some kind of bread.

Did I spell potatoes correctly? I remember the Dan Quayle hoop-la when he got it wrong and I can never remember if it is with an "e" or without. Guess I should look it up.

It's too bad that my husband is not here and I wish that all the nieces and nephews could come. They have five kids and only two with them. And, of course, my son is in the Navy. Have to get used to him not being here.
