Having three grandchildren, I hear a bevy of nicknames for them, and also theirs for us. I am interested in what nicknames you have or use for others and why.

BTW, my grandmother called me "punkin" which I knew she meant as loving, but in my childish little girl head, I felt like I was round & fat. Probably would have liked to be called a cucumber.

Claudia,

All of the names have a little story behind them from when they were babies. They are really young still. My oldest is 4 years old, but he is soooo serious! It is amazing how much he is like his father and my 2 year old wants WHATEVER my 4 yo wants. The baby is almost 6 months, so he has no say in what I call him (yet!). When I call Kolyn (4yo) Butterbean, he'll say "Now mom, I've told you I really prefer my REAL name" and Korbyn (2 yo) chimes in with "YEAH MAMA! OUR REAL NAMES!".

Kolyn aka "Butterbean" got his name b/c he was the fattest little blond baby I'd ever seen and so "Butterbean" just came out one day and stuck.

Korbyn aka "Sweet Potato" got his name b/c he loved sweet potatoes so much the tip of his little nose turned orange, so the name came out and stuck.

Kody aka "Dimples" If you can guess....has the biggest dimples when he smiles. The funny thing is that strangers will call him "Dimples" on their own. Needless to say...it stuck:)

My Dad called me Sugar, as did my grandma. My name is Melina Jeanine and when I was little I couldn't say it clearly and it came out Minna Jean. Got called that alot by relatives. Now I'm Mrs. B to my DH, Ma or Madra to my girls, and if the younger one is in a good mood, "Yo, Dude!"

Ashley... I've never heard those names before, but they are cute. How old are they that they want to be called by their real names?

My dad calls me Punky. Yes, like Punky Brewster. I was obsessed with her as a child and we favored a little, too.

I have three boys Butter Bean, Sweet Potato, and Dimples. They already ask me to call them by their real names (Kolyn, Korbyn, and Kody). My nick name embarrassed me sometimes, but deep down it made me feel special.

These names are a hoot! Libbie (Anne) reminded me of something. My real name is Claudia, (maiden name) Blue. You can imagine the hurts, I (maybe) successfully forgot until now. ;~) I was called Clod (like dirt), Clue-dia, Little BOY Blue, Blume-r. I swore that I would give my kids some good nicknames, since my real name didn't give any nice names. Well, my daughter's name is Monica (MoNICa), & we called her NIKKI. She is still called Nikki, but amazingly, she was called Nikki Mouse. RATS!! My son's name is Joel. No problem I thought. Some artistic kid in grade school called him "Joel Joel, the toilet bowl." Aaaarrgh! Robin, I remember names from old WW II movies, were Tomato or Mazie...names of affection stating they were "really hot Dames!" Another name for a hot chick! Think nicknames will always be with us, & it is a tribute to the inventiveness of the human psyche. ;0)

These names are so fun to read about! I have a super-long name, and everyone has just called me "Libbie," ever since I was born. Then there are all the permutations: Lib, Libbet, Liberty, and, since on of my names is Elizabeth, the inevitable "Lizard-Breath" (and I still insist - my breath is just FINE!!!)... And since becoming a mother? Mama, Mom, Mot, and, my most favorite in a funny way, Mot the Bot (as in bottle, NOT bot fly - ICK!!!) - when my youngest, Arthur, was still nursing, my older boy, William, would call me "Mot the Bot," saying that I really *WAS* Arthur's bottle.....

XOXO, Libbie

My dad called me Tomato. My husband calls me Doll. Old friends used to call me Roxy. I have 4 names that begin with an R and Roxy is not one of them.

Daddy called me squirt, hubby calls me baby, grandson calls me mi-mi and Susie is my nickname that my grandmother gave me after finding that my real name "Rebecca" was not my favorite. Everyone calls me Susie, only legal stuff knows me as Rebecca.

My daughter Caitlin calls me "bombay"- no clue where it came from, but it stuck and it is just hers!!! Her nickname from her dad is 'Moose'. From her brother and a friend it's now 'CC'. Our Mariah has been everything from 'bug' to 'twila' to 'tallulahbelle.' For the boys, it is usually 'Bud'. And 'Bud' is what my MIL calls my hubby. WHen very little Jonathon was 'Nahni' (how do you spell something you've never written before???) Michael was 'scooter.' But they both grew out of those. DH calls me Ang or 'sweetie' or 'hunny'

haven't decided on a grandma name for me.... I suppose it will be whatever the grandkidlets come up with.... if I ever get any!

Do what you love, love what you do.

I'm really enjoying this thread, too! Lots of smiles & giggles :-) Yes, Claudia, that would've been so cute & funny!! She would have loved that! She was a great watercolor painter & we have one her pieces in the front room :-)

Jane, I'm sorry to hear that your dad passed away. When you shared about your dad's nickname for you, it reminded me of the one my dad has for me & it's Dewey, because when I was little, I had a speech impediment (stuttered & couldn't enunciate), so dog was dee dee (which we actually named our dog. lol) & when I said my name, it was Dewey. My dad lives 800 miles away & I miss him a lot, but, like Jane, that's a special name to me & only my dad can call me that :-)

Cracky cracked me up:)
I was called squirt, snickelfritz, and a variety of things connecting to my name including Amiable Grapes and Aimless.
I call my son Slim, although he's not skinny any more.
Oh and most little kids seem to have a hard time saying Amy so I have been called Mamie a lot, I kind of like that.

I am enjoying reading your nick names. In the really olden times (like scripture) names were given that also had a meaning or even blessing on the child. So every time, they heard their name, they were aware of its meaning. I think that 's kind of what nicknames do. Just like Jane, her special name by her Dad, meant so much to her. Joy, my grandtrs call me Gramtoots, starting out of the Tootsieroll theme. I sign all my mails to them that way, & I LOVE to hear them call me that. Julie Anne, I cracked up with the name of Cracky! (Pardon the pun!) It would have been neat for her to have a cottage industry & sell something, calling it..."By Cracky!"

My name is Jonni (John-e) and most folks call me "Jon"...even though I am VERY much a gal. My friend, Erika (who we called Eeka) called me Jake...

I call my little girl who's proper name is Violet Mae, "Little Wren", "Chickadee" or "Miss Mae" when she's being obstinate!

My father was the type who never called anyone by their real name. He named everyone by what they looked like, what they did, etc. I won't even begin to tell you the names he had for my old boyfriends. He called my brother Fred, Sam a character on a kids show my brother like. He called me Poochie because I always loved dogs and it was one of the first things I talked about when learning to talk. Boy how I miss being called Poochie. My father has been dead for 12 years now, and that nickname has become so special to me. I don't want anyone else to use that name when referring to me. It was just something between me and my Dad.

My dad used to call me toots (like the first syllable of tootsie roll) or tootsie doll. You really can't shorten Joy, so . . .

However, when my sister got married, she married into a whole family of guys. As she and my BIL had boys (of course!) The oldest one took to calling me "Unca Joy" since the word Auntie Joy didn't make sense to him. It stuck until the youngest one was about 6. I sort of miss it!

Have a great day!

My daughter called my mother-in-law, "Cracky" one day when they were coloring together. My MIL asked me what did she just call me & I shyly replied, Cracky, as I, too, was confused about this name. My mom-in-law was a wonderful woman with a fantastic sense of humor, & she said, I like that! So all my kids called her that & I hope someday when I have grandkids, that I'll have a special name unlike all names. It was wonderful! I miss Cracky (she was one of the greatest ladies I ever knew!!)

My nicknames are Kathy, Kacky, and Kaphe.

My nickname is actually Kathy but I had trouble with the th when I was little so ended up Kacky or Kaphe. The names sort of stuck. When I was a supervisor in a sheltered workshop I had a employee client who called me Kacky Boss. So my husband made a desk name plate and put Kacky Boss on one side of it.
