She had just fed the family dinner, maybe a roast chicken, so that there will be cold meat for sandwiches tomorrow. As it is a Saturday night, everyone needs to be bathed and ready for church in the morning. She puts the children in the tub, one at a time- first Floyd, he just turned 6, and is able to wash himself nicely, so she puts Clifford, age 3 1/2, and Merrill age 2 1/2 in also, so that Floyd can help them wash at the same time. She has a hard time stooping over the big tub as she is 7 months pregnant with her fourth child(who will be a girl) but she does what she has to do. Elmer, my great grandfather is probably shining every one's shoes ready for the morning, and worrying over finances. Though he has a good trade, and is a second generation plumber and contractor, times are not easy. The little house in town rings with the sounds of laughter from the children, and gentle scoldings from their mother. She tries to hurry them through their bath time, knowing it is still chilly for mid April in upstate NY. As she dries them all off, she gives them each extra hugs and kisses, thankful for each one of them, and for a warm house, food on the table, and a husband who has a job. Bonnie Ellis	Posted - Apr 20 2010 : 1:10:05 PM Brenda, how delightful a story. 100 years ago my great grandfather would be building a sod house near Liberty, NE. He had a wife and 14 children. That must have been SOME bath night. He would become a barber in town but would move his family to Colorado where he left them and went to the Rosebud Indian Reservation to try to put together a wild west show. He died of a brain tumor, broke and with his dreams never fulfilled. I never heard the whole story about what happened to Ellendear his wife or the children. I feel so sorry for the women when the men just leave! I am so lucky to have 48 years so far with my wonderful husband. grandmother and orphan farmgirl
kristin sherrill	Posted - Apr 19 2010 : 7:21:26 PM I want more please! 1oo years ago really doesn't seem that long ago. 1910. My friend Mrs. T, is almost 93 and she doesn't seem that old. She could have been in this story. I love those times. My cousin sent me an email with a Youtube video of San Francisco from 1905. The trolleys and horse drawn carriages and bikes. And the cars were so neat. It was a few days before the big earthquake that destroyed most of the city. It was weird watching all those people and thinking they are all gone now.
