I'm in the ER now with Aria. She's had a cold this week with a bad cough. This afternoon she spiked a fever (102.7). Her temp is now 103. She's had a chest xray, breathing treatment, throat culture, and nasal swab. Bummer. The poor thing. She is now getting fluids, antibiotics and Tylenol. We're waiting for lab results to see if we'll stay or go home. Sigh. This is life with cancer and I'll never get used to it! Please keep us close and in the light. I'll keep you posted. Julia

OK WE"RE HOME!!!!
Aria has been diagnosed with +RSV which is a nasty viral respiratory infection..common in infants and can be quite serious...It is less serious in older kids but long lasting...usually a 2 week deal. She also has early signs of pneumonia. I know..total bummer. I can hardly believe it. Her temp got up to 103 in the ER but by the time we left it was 100...Our doctor said we could come home and take it easy but must call first thing in the morning with a status report. We'll go back on Monday for labs and a check up..Her blood work remains super good so that's a good thing.

Here's the thing: Monday she acted like she had a cold...just a simple stupid every day run of the mill cold. Tuesday same. Wednesday afternoon her cough started sounding different and more intense. No fever. I decided to keep her home from school today AND I called the oncology clinic to report that I was nervous and didn't know what to do. At the time she didn't have a fever so I didn't know if I should bring her in or keep her quiet and restful or try to put it out of my mind, or, or, or...You see, we are in a transition stage. Aria will soon be done with treatment and when she gets a fever we'll treat it just like any other kid. So cool! yet YIKES!!! What I thought was just a cold is really a low-grade pneumonia. I was stunned to get that diagnosis and didn't see it coming. It just feels HUGE! I know this is the transition. Intellectually I'm fine, emotionally, I'm struggling to catch my breath!

I'm thrilled we're home and at the same time terrified that she isn't being monitored 24/7. There's great comfort in that. My husband is beside himself that we're home. Being a doctor, it is much easier for him to shift gears..Me? it takes longer..I grind and process...

So right now, I'm amped up. My chest feels tight like I'm about to have a cough like Aria's. I know it is totally psycho-somatic but there it is...

This is the ride my sisters...It is just sickening sometimes..We're doing so well but....
I'll let you know how the night goes..THANK YOU for keeping us close and in your thoughts and prayers. It continues to mean more than I can say!!

My thoughts are with you! My daughter had RSV when she was little- it's a nasty virus. It whipped her out totally- she looked like a little skeleton after fighting it! You have one tough cookie there- what a fighter! So glad she's doing better! -Cindy

You ladies are THE BEST!! Thank you!!
Aria is indeed much better today!
We spent 3 hours in the oncology clinic again yesterday because she continued to spike a fever. I was thrilled that her oncologist was able to see her, listen to her and touch her. I LOVE this woman. Seriously, she makes everything right in my world when it comes to Aria! I trust her so completely.

I was preparing for Aria to be admitted. She just felt so lousy all day long and that cough...OMG it was so wicked. It got so bad that she was holding her tummy complaining that her belly hurt!

Aria's counts took a significant dive. 2200 on Thursday to 1260 yesterday. We are holding her chemo for a few days. If she were to stay on it and fight this virus at the same time, her little immune system would be completely wiped making her even more susceptible to every virus and bacteria known to man. That would also mean a definite hospital stay, which is never a fun party. So, she's off chemo until we check her counts again on Monday.

Our doctor told me more than once that Aria should be feeling a lot better within a day or two. Let's not forget to mention that she has 4 different antibiotics on board! I know. Cancer and immune suppression is just the pits!!!

Aria slept so well last night with hardly any coughing. I, on the other hand, was a mild wreck listening for her. It was so quiet in her room..too quiet....an eerie spooky crazy oh-my-god-did- she O.D.-on antibiotics??!!! quiet..I know..I'm stressed.. So I checked on her more than once. Meanwhile, little Rianna has the crud so she was coughing like mad.. Needless to say, I didn't sleep much. BUT Aria is SO much better. WOW!! She woke up in great spirits and has remained so pretty much all day. No fevers either. This is great news.. I am feeling so much better myself.

Ladies, all your thoughts, prayers, bits of advice and encouragement..ahhhh I take them all in..I sip on them all day long.. It helps..We are so close and yet we are not done. In some ways it is as hard today as it was 2 years ago. It remains surreal and hard to process. I ache when I spend any amount of time thinking this is life for Aria. Yeah, it will make her a stronger person...yeah, it has taught me a great many things...indeed..but the bottom line is, I'd trade every ounce of strength and enlightenment I have to see that she could avoid this. I can't do that though. I must accept this and I do. But that doesn't make the process easy and tear-free...

Today has been a great sunny day. Thank you again from the bottom of my heart. It is 2pm and I'm drinking wine in a crystal goblet like a princess!! Here's to YOU!!! ~julia

Oh Julia! I am so sorry to hear that Aria is sick. That same bug is just all over here in NY. It makes you feel awful and that darn cough just loves to hang around for awhile. My husband and both grandkids had it. Hang in there honey, she will get through this and come out fine. I know she will. In the meantime I am praying for her and all of you as usual.

Julia,
I just left the hospital from staying with my DD and her 6 week old son that has been diagnosed with RSV. I am so scared for him!!! But, he is healthy other wise. I can't imagin a child who is fighting one bad thing and getting this. I think of Aria everday and I always include her in our Prayers. My oldest Grandson ask who Aria was, he is 4, I told him about her in 4 year old terms and now he wants to pray for "Awea" too. Just know that a lot of people are prayer warriors for your little one. I hope she is well soon!!!!

Blessings,
Tina
