We will be hosting our third high school foreign exchange student in four years beginning this weekend. My husband and I were not able to have children, but God has rewarded us handsomely and given us the opportunity to have "daughters" all over the world. Our third "daughter" is coming to us from Turkey. We have learned so much about other cultures and in turn have happily shared with them the many different cultures and traditions that make up this great country. By the time these kids return home they have a lifetime of memories to take with them and another family in which to share their life.

Congratulations on your "third" daughter! It must be so exciting for your family! That would be so interesting to have a foreign exchange student. With three of them, you must have learned a lot about new cultures and different places. Very exciting! Congratulations again!

I think Julie went to China, and Pam to Germany. My neighbor has an exchange student fron Hong Kong who never had Halloween. She was embarrassed at first to knock on peoples doors and say trick or treat but she did and said it was a lot of fun.

Each girl has been different for sure. Not just in cultures but in personality and interests, which has made our experience all the more rewarding. Our newest "daughter" moved in this weekend and she is adjusting very well. She is experiencing her first snow this morning. Always fun when they haven't experienced this kind of winter before and I have to laugh. It was a dusting of snow. She has a real awakening coming when winter finally hits. 
Our first daughter was from Ukraine. My husband and I went to visit her and her parents a couple of summers ago. It was such a great experience. Life is so different outside the U.S. Quite amazing actually. Now we need to plan a visit to our second daughter who lives in Hong Kong. I love the lasting relationships these experiences create. It really makes our world so much smaller.
If you ever have the opportunity to host, you should do it. It is an adjustment but it is amazing, too.
I am happy to hear about how many of you know of someone that has been a student to other countries from the U.S. I wish we sent more kids abroad but we don't send nearly the amount of kids that want to come here.

When I was in junior high and high school my family hosted a couple of foriegn exchange students, one from Japan and another from France. It was so much fun for our family to learn about other cultures and to show others about where we lived (Washington State). I would love to be able to host exchange students someday.

How exciting, Lisa! I want to say an extra special "THANK YOU!" for hosting exchange students! I was an exchange student to France, and still keep in contact with my host family. What a huge blessing you and your husband are to each of these girls! Keep us posted on your adventures with her, I'm sure it will be a wonderful time!

My mom went to Turkey about 10 yrs ago to study essential oils. She developed a great friendship with a college age girl, who she still corresponds with. She loved the people & it was quite an experience(esp the bathrooms, which were basically a hole in the ground, & my mom was about 70 at the time!)

My dh was an exchange student to Germany and his parents also hosted while he was in HS. His experience was full, he hitchhiked to see the wall come down! They still keep in touch with their contacts there and that was 25 ish yrs ago. Have fun getting to know your new 'daughter' :)

I'm so glad that you know of kids that went abroad. I know it is hard for parents to send their kids, but the kids benefit so much from going. Let me know if you remember where they went.

That is really nice, my neice was a foreign exchange student and so was a neighbor. They both stay in touch with the familys that sponsered them, I just can't remember where they went.
