Have any of you Mommy's out there had stretch mark trouble when you were expecting? I have heard that even though you can use all kinds of lotions, lanolin, cocoa butter etc, that there really isn't anything you can do to get rid of them nor prevent them.
Honestly, expect for a few stray stretch marks with the first two expectancies, I didn't really get them. This time though, it seems they are popping up on my tummy like a spiderweb at Halloween. Craziness..hehe

So....is there any tried and true method to helping stop these things, or are they just a part of life and you learn to accept their presence. hehe

Jessie

I would have to agree with Alee, plus drinking lots of water helps keep the natural elasticity of the skin.

how sweet it is to love some one, how right itis to care

I really think it depends on how deep they are. I got really deep ones with my first daughter.Plus my skin was really stretched out also. I have a mess of a stomcah area still at 60 and my oldest is 43 in Novemeber. The second pregnancy I didn't get any more, but it was to late. Theres not much you can do aftetr you get them. Some plastic surgery can help I guess, but I sure don't have the money for that. Probably wouldn't do it if I did. Vit. E is supposed to help if u use it during pregnancy. I don't. I didn't hear that until after!! They are my battle scars LOL!

I have heard that before that it is genetics. I really don't think I have anything to worry about if that is how it is. My grandmother (to this day and shes in her 80s) doesnt have one. ;) The dr told me last time that I was made for baby making because I go down to my original size so fast afterwards. I think nursing should help me get the pds off, but the stretch marks==I've never seen so many in either of my other two pregnancies and Im only 18 1/2 weeks.

thanks girls

i had none with my first pregnancy and a bunch with my second. I'm 9 weeks post partum (pardum?) and some of them have significantly decreased already. To be honest, I'm proud of them. I earned these babies and if they gross people out if I wear a swim suit, then I say let them be grossed out! I had fun being a skinny little college girl and getting the attention. But, I'm a woman now, I'm seasoned, and I'm happy about it.

I'm in soap box mode at the moment, sorry. But the world wants us to all look like 21 year olds and I'm over it. Give me my little tummy pooch, my apron and some spit up on my shirt, and I feel so womanly.

Ok don't hate me and kick me off the board...but what Jonni says is true. My momma didn't have any and even after 4 pregnancies in 4 years I have none.
I know...life isn't always fair!! It's ok though, I've got vericose veins in my legs that are horrible. I expect that I'll have to have them stripped after this pregnancy. Not looking forward to that one!!
Good luck....it is all par for the course!!

I was told by my Dr. that it's in your genes. If your mom had them, you can probably bet you will, too. I did buy all kinds of stuff to try to stop them, but I ended up with a few. Now, they've gotten better, but I do have one rather deep/wide one that hurts. It's getting there, but I put Burts Bee's apricot oil on it daily, right out of the shower. There are soooo many things out there to try, and I think I tried them all, Jessie! Cocoa butter didn't do a thing for this gal's tummy!!!

It's kindof both, Jessie. Stretch marks start deep within the skin. By the time they are visible there is little you can do except help them heal faster. Stretch marks are where your skin has been, well, stretched and as you probably know, they are painful and inflamed when they first appear. Things that contain natural healing such as vitamin E, cocao butter, Shea butter, and Emu Oil help the skin repair itself quickly, however the stretch mark won't really just go away. It's damaged skin after all. (Think of saran wrap that has been stretched and then had a finger poked in the tight part. It might not tear, but the finger poked part is damaged and stretched out more than the rest. The stretch mark however will lose it's inflamation (the redness and some of the size) and will appear to shrink and turn a silvery color. Over time the Silvery marks can shrink and I have heard they will go away. I don't know about that for sure, but my Nora stretch marks are shrinking and are silver so we will see.

The best "Medicine" is prevention. Eat lots of omega 3 oils. Avacados, fish oil, and eggs are great sources. These help with your skin's natural elasticity. Those belly creams help by keeping the skin soft and supple. The more you can keep your skin healthy both in and out, the less stretch marks you will have.

So while no cream will magically prevent all stretch marks- especially if your internal skin is degraded from dehydration or poor nutrition, it can help keep the severity down. And again- think from the inside out- not the outside in. Our skin is naturally designed to keep things out so it is counter intutive to try to fix it from the outside in. (Not saying the skin doesn't let things pass through, but it just isn't the ideal way).
