Hey sista's! Last week my hubby was laid off after 13 years as Senior Project Manager at the same architectural firm. It's getting rediculous. We've considered moving to another part of the country that's doing well, but here's the thing. We are in NC, about an hour's drive from Charlotte so we've been able to keep this country girl down on the farm at an affordable leased farm home. My heart would break to leave NC because the Blue Ridge Mtns are very dear to me. We are Appalachian Trail hikers, and doing so as part of a homeschool project for our very hyper 7 yo son. He's also a little farmer at heart and would rather work outside, even in the rain, than sit and do school. But alas....Anyway, we would be willing to consider an area where there is work for my hubby. We run a gourmet granola biz so would have to consider the challenges there too. Does anyone have info on an affordable farmhome that would be within an easy drive to work for hubby (up to an hour and 15 mins), is also near to an upscale gourmet-type clientele with either a Whole Foods or Fresh Market within an hour's drive (that's who we sell to), and would enable us to have critters. I personally would like to be off a dirt road off a dirt road off a dirt road, if you catch my drift. I love the safety and beauty of mountains too, my heart seems tied to them somehow, though currently they are about an hour's drive too but I can see them from my front porch. On the house, I would need a large, modern kitchen to run the biz and the one luxury I would love is a large garden or jet tub in the master bath. Right now we have a 2200 sf farm house set on 28 acres with barn for storage. No garden tub, but the rent is only $650/mo with December free as a Christmas gift from our landlord-an older gentleman, who is not in good health and his children would likely sell if he were to pass. Not sure if anyone has any input for this farmgirl, but sure would appreciate it!

Utah is doing much better than most states. I lived there for a bit (in Layton) and loved it although my living situation with friends was horrible. That's why I left. I'm thinking of moving back there when I finish school in the Fall provided I can find a job. One thing I will say about Ogden - I heard from many people while I was there that it is not a nice place to live. Lots of gangs and a very high crime rate. But you can live 15 minutes away and be in a better area. But if you come any further west you'll find the same employment situation as everywhere else - not good. As far as rent goes - you have great deal!! There is lots of wide open country out here but I'm not sure what the rent would be on a farm.

Cassandra, I'm not sure if I have any leads, but if'n you ever go, I'll take over the farm lease of yours!! No, I am NOT kidding! Email me! That's a good deal!

I hear lots of areas in UT and CO are expanding. A granola business is probably the sort of stuff that would appeal to hikers and outdoorsmen in those areas. Good luck

Some ideas....

Someone else posted this link for jobs available in Ogden, UT. http://www.squarefootgardening.com/

Ogden is a large city located close to Salt Lake City which is even bigger. There are still outlying areas that have farms and ranches in the West Haven area. The economy is not to bad yet out west, although we are definately feeling the affects. There is still alot of building going on in that area, so I'll bet he would be able to find something close.

Hi Cassandra!

Wow it sounds like you have an amazing deal there! I don't think you will find rent that amazing anywhere else! We pay $730 for a house in town. *ugh*.

I recommend that you do some searching at www.findyourspot.com and also at www.monster.com

If you husband puts out his resume maybe some "headhunters" would find him. Headhunter contacts are amazing because not only does it benefit business who hired them, but it also is great for the job-seeker. They usually get a higher pay average because they are considered a desirable commodity.

I know our area is doing fantastic. There is still lots of building going on around town and several large architecture firms. It's beautiful country up here, but very different from what you are used too. The bonus is that it is an agricultural area with lots of close by-but-far-enough-away type towns where you could probably get rent or even buy a small homestead for cheap if you husband was willing to drive a little bit each day to get to work. The bonus would be that at most it would be a one hour commute morning and night- but on wide open roads instead of bumper to bumper traffic.

*hugs* I hope that helped a bit. Oh and welcome to the forum!!
