I was really ticked off today when my 7th grade son came home and told me that a male teacher didn't want him to go to the restroom during class time. He told the class that the four minutes between classes was enough time to go their locker, get their things, and be to class on time as well as take care of any bathroom needs. I guess it's time for me to pay a little visit to the school. What I'd like to do is tell him to just pee in the guys trash can next time!!!!! Bad attitude I know. Any advise?

Looking back, I can't believe that I managed to dash every day of seventh grade from the basement cafeteria to the 6th floor music room. Straight up 7 flights of stairs, carrying at least 20 pounds on my back. At a dead run to make it before the bell.

No wonder I was so thin back then!

Oh boy this brings up memories of Jr and high school. We had three levels to get to class , lockers and bathroom. I ran , carried all my books so I didn't miss the bell. Hardley used the bathroom. I had years of nightmares after I was out of school , thinking I was going to be late for class. I took the bell thing serious, any trouble I would have got in school there would have been bigger trouble at home.

Ok I'm going to ask this to the teachers, a question that has been a need to know for many years. When in grade school we had to buy two big boxes of tissue at the beginning of the year , the super big boxes. I didn't go through two boxes let alone a half a box of tissue the whole year. And thinking about it i never seen anyone blowing their nose, just snot nose kids running around and wiping on their coats outside at recess. If you were sick you stayed home, but not as much sickness as nowadays.

Who gets those extra boxes of unused tissue?

Oh and another thing we were made to eat all our food whether we liked it or not. I remember hurling in a trash can at lunch from some nasty food that I was forced to eat. :P

I support good schools and teachers, gosh I wanted to be a teacher growing up. But homeschool is taking a favor that I support very much. And is becoming the mainstream. It will be very interesting to see the how the future of our childrens children will be handled.

Those impressions of our childhood will be with us and shape us for our life. Even the little things can make a difference. This could be a major impact if you hated school or loved it. We should not take who our children are around most the time lightly. Get to know their teachers and their friends.

Ugh, middle school and high school, I don't ever want to be there again, lol. I really wouldn't mind the knees I had then, but that's all! lol

We had 5 minutes to get from class to class and I ALWAYS had to stop at my locker to change books. One thing I had to contend with was lines to use the facilities and then hallways that were so crowded that you often could only walk at a snails pace. There was one wing- the science wing that was always a pain for me. My class was at the end of the hallway, no shortcuts, and my previous class had been in the mirroring wing on the other side. Literally, the two classes were the farthest apart two class rooms could possibly be.

However, I decided that I would rather be "tardy" than have to raise my hand in class. So I think I got a total of 2 detentions in my high school career because of being Tardy.

One of my best teachers understood the predicament and had the hall passes on a counter near the door. He didn't want his teaching interrupted by requests to go to the restroom and he treated us like adults to manage our time to the bathroom appropriately. Plus, it was our loss to lose teaching time and his was a tough class so no one abused the privilege.

Thanks Amie, this not the first time that this teacher has humiliated my son. There are a lot of really good teachers out there, but there are some that are in teaching because of June, July and August. There are now new rules about being in the hall for any reason and I think my child was the one that got to set the example for the rest of the class. I just feel badly for our kids that even the most basic of needs have to regulated, but I also understand that security is an issues at all times because of the world we live in.

Man, this thread reminds me of how much I hated middle school and high school! Being herded around by the sound of a bell made me miserable. I felt like I was in jail for that whole 6 years. And I was a bright, conscientious kid. One of the "good" girls.

About the time between classes: sometimes it's enough and sometimes it isn't. It depends on a lot of complex factors. If I have to use the bathroom, but I also have to go to my locker to switch books, and my locker is on the far south end of the first floor, while the class I'm leaving is one the far north end of the 3rd floor, and the class I have to get to is on the far south end of the 5th floor, well...No, that's not enough time to do both things.

And having to raise your hand in class and ask the teacher permission to attend to bodily functions is intensely embarrassing to a sensitive adolescent. I had some really sadistic teachers who did everything they could to control and humiliate the kids. Like making us wear an old toilet seat around our necks as a hall pass if we asked to go.

Uggh. I have to stop now. Janneane, I don't know if your son is taking advantage or not, but I am ready to sympathize. I am so glad that I'm not a kid anymore. Worst years of my life.

Thank you for a teachers perspective. I just think that to impose these strict rules will result in more kids having bladder infections and heaven forbid run the risk of an accident in class. What about the girls on their periods? I would have been in big trouble had I been denied access to a bathroom as needed. It just seems sad to me that a few kids that abuse privileges cause stress for others. If you have to go during class time you stay after class a minute for each minute.

I agree, we had three minutes when I was in school.
I went to a large school too; it was multi-leveled. Three minutes was plenty of time if I did what I was supposed to.
I have gone a round or two on this issue with my son too. Funny how he stopped whining when he realized his school is A LOT smaller and he had an extra minute to work with.

While funny you will end up with a kid with a VERY long "vacation" if not a trip to the police station for indescent exposure! As a teacher of 7th grades I can TOTALLY see where the guy is coming from. My 7th graders are the WORST about bathroom time. The spend all their time between classes talking and such and then all want to use the bathroom when they get to class and the bell has already rang. It is a disruption to class and learning. While 4 minutes doesn't seem that long it really is. I have to get to the restroom between classes too and I always have enough time.

Think of it like this - if everyday during your sons class the teacher left to go to the bathroom after the bell rang and was gone 3-5 minutes how would you feel? Probably like the teacher wasn't doing his job! You would be upset that the teacher wasn't doing his best and using his time wisely. Well teachers feel the same way about the kids. We want them doing their job which is learning.

Your son may not be one to often ask to use the restroom between classes and may just be paying for the actions of the other kids. My advice would be to tell him to go between classes. I promise you 4 minutes is enough time when they actually use it for what they are supposed to.
