My son rolled his ankle at football this morning and tried to "tough it out" all day. I picked him up about 4 (at practice at 7:45am this morning) and he was limping. Took him to the chiropractor for his back (another story) and he was in so much pain we ended up at the local fast track. 4 hours later we're headed home with pain meds, booster ibuprofen, crutches, a half/cast/splint thing, and instructions that there should be no football for a week! Needless to say he's REALLY distraught! For a kid going on 15 to have to already sit the sidelines while everyone else is working their butts off for 8 hours is humiliating! Oh and he's a cranky gus right now! AND, it's making me cranky cause he's directing some of that at me...in addition, of course, to being in the middle of feeling REALLY bad for him...AND I want to see him follow the doctor's orders and stay off it but he's pretty stubborn. Hopefully the trainer will keep her beady eyes on him and yell at him if he's off that bench w/out his crutches. <grrrrr> Sometimes there's just way to much testosterone at my house.......

Thanks for all the commiseration!! He's "technically" on those crutches till at least the 19th. We have an appt with our family doctor to see what's next. Now his gut is hurting from both the crutches AND the meds, and his ribs from the crutches. We ice it as much as possible at home and he ices at practice too. I'm hoping it won't keep him out too long. It's so hard to go to all these practices and not be able to play. these kids are on doubles and start practice around 8 and end at 4! -- I have all kinds of issues with my back and an old broken ankle injury (that I didn't stay off of...) and I just hate to see him with all that kind of pain when he's older...

Oh no! what a bad time to bust up your ankle. I just did the same thing, so I sympathize with his frustration. I hope he stays off of it. It will heal, but patience is hard when your a young man and football is in the air.

I went through a similar experience with my oldest son about 2yrs ago, only it was his KNEE and not his ankle. Funny thing though-- the biggest guy on his OWN team (300+lbs) FELL ON HIM-- TWICE!! (the kid ALSO wiped out my son's replacement!!! Kind of tough to play ball with no CENTER!!!)

We went through the whole thing too -- Doctor, x-rays, etc... His doc wanted him on crutches but my son ADAMANTLY REFUSED!! (oh, do I know S-T-U-B-B-O-R-N!!! AND testosterone? I'm the only girl in my house too-- except for the cat and one of my little Chi-monsters) He would NOT rest that knee, and his coach was no help in that department either. He ended up needing to wear a special brace with BARS on it during practice AND the games. He could not play football without it. Now he complains of the pain whenever the weather starts to change. But, he refused to listen when he was told to take care of himself and rest that knee for a few short days. Now he's going to feel that pain probably for the rest of his life. What else can you do when they just won't listen? They figure it's THEY'RE body right? Well, as bad as I feel when my son complains of the pain, all I can do is say "Well, we TOLD you to stay off of it. If you'd only LISTENED!!!"

I am STILL working through an ankle injury from April. Thankfully he's young and will bounce back quicker!!! Best of luck to the mommy-nurse. =)

Thanks ladies! It was a rough night. I made the "mom" decision to have him stay home today with it elevated. He's not happy but I think, relieved. He can go back tomorrow and stand around all day but today, he's resting (and so am I...I hope!)

Oh no! I hope he heals super fast! Remind him that he only has one body and it has to last him at least another 90 years! *hugs*
