Thank you for all the wonderful warm thoughts! Aria is still in the hospital. She has a tenacious fever. Last night it peaked at 103.5! yikes!! poor baby. She has a GI bug that is causing the fevers and is on antibiotics to deal with it. This is a direct result of her chemo, which causes her resistence/immune system to be suppressed. The bacteria that is causing the infection is a naturally occuring one that we all have on our bodies. The problem with immuno-suppression is that bacteria, like this one, are opportunistic and take advantage any time white blood cells are low and don't have the fighting power to keep the bacteria in check. This is a typical problem with chemo in general and specifically leukemia. We can plan on more hospitalizations over the course of time. It is simply what happens.
Aria is in pretty good spirits despite it all. She definitely has her moments when she reminds me that she is full-blown kid and that just sends me right over the moon. More often than not, however, she is quiet and reserved. It really is a lot to take in for a little 4 year old.
We are in isolation as a result of this bug too, which means we are totally confined to just our room. She's too wiped out to do much of anything so we sit and read and watch movies. My husband and I are taking shifts with the other kids and so far it seems to be working well. I'm so grateful for all the offers to watch the kids. Not to worry, I may call on you one of these days!
Everyone is treating us very well. The nurses are terrific and we just adore our oncologist. No worries there.
I'll keep you updated as I learn more. Thanks again! Many smiles to you all..~julia hayes
