It's been awhile since I've done an update, but we are still waiting on the road to be completed. We must have the world's slowest road guy... that's what happens when the natural gas companies come into the county to drill - they get preferential treatment...

Anyhow, I've updated the blog - got pics of the new goats I'm buying, the catfish, the brand new bee hives...

Congratulations, Erin!!! I'm so happy for you - and all of your animals - those are some lucky little ones to be living with you - they are so darling. I love hearing about your farm developments - thanks for keeping us posted...

And Kate - yikes!!! - why did you have to remind me about the snakes?!?!?!?

XOXO, Libbie

Erin-

It sounds like you are doing great! I know from my experiences with goats that you most certainly have to gain their respect. They are incredibly intelligent and will test you on a regular basis.

Are you planning on milking your goats as well as growing them for fiber? When we milked we used goat feed to keep them happy in the stand. Hope everything keeps going great!

And no, so far I haven't seen the snakes this year, but I am sure that they are not too far away, unless the recent flooding washed them away...

I researched goats pretty in-depth because I wanted goats that I could handle by myself if necessary (DH travels quite a bit). Anyhow, of all the goats I researched, the angoras were the most docile, the sweetest and the easiest to handle.

That said, they are also often timid, and my two girls have given me quite the run around. Once I catch them, they are really easy to handle (in most cases) and are generally well- behaved. But I am boarding my goats at the moment and I know that they are giving the folks who are caring for them a bit of trouble.

Ruthie is, as all goats are, very curious and has figured out how to sneak out of the pen. She doesn't go far, because she's too timid to venture out on her own, but she is generally the first one to find the weak spots in the fence. She's also very sweet, loves to get treats and is quite greedy when it comes to getting animal crackers, her favorite snack.

Dinah, on the other hand, is fiesty and a bit aggressive, but only towards Ruthie. I think it is her way of establishing dominance and is normal, but she did give me a bit of trouble when I was trying to shear her. Of course, I was doing this without a goat stand, which is generally required to shear without a fuss, and I was using scissors, which meant that my shearing took HOURS to do. And once Dinah had "tested" me, she stopped fighting and did pretty much anything I wanted. And I think now she might even respect me a bit. Not bad for someone who only sees the girls on the weekends.

Being able to handle the goats by myself is also why I'm getting my bucks as babies, so that I can raise them so that they are used to me doing all this stuff with them.

Thanks for sharing Erin. I loved reading about the progress. I've tossed around the idea of getting an angora goat or two some days. Kind of goes along with my goal to learn to spin. Anyhoo......best wishes and lots of blessings!!

Erin, your blog is so fun..I loved looking at your goats.
How are their personalities? Are angoras pretty docile?

The pic of your wild flowers is so pretty.

About your pond...are the big scary snakes back too??!!??!!

Hoping to get down and get the garden started Sunday. I'm giving up on the road guy for now. He seems to do more when I'm not worrying about him... LOL

Frannie - can you send me some pics of the male yearlings you want to sell? I'd like to take a look at them to see which one might work the best for breeding to Ruthie and Dinah this fall...

Speaking of goats - if anyone wants an angora goat wether, there seems to be an excess of them this year in Texas - everyone I know has tons of wethers and bucks for sale...

The sellers are begging me to help them find more homes for them...

Too many boys this year!

Erin-

How fun! I think that would be so wonderful for both of you. Goats have such great personalities and can be such a productive part of Farm-life.

I have some more exciting news. One of my city friends is thinking about getting one of the wethers from the farm where Lloyd and Langston live and giving him to me in return for his fleece. He's a favorite of mine and a sweet little red wether, so this will be very cool... and it might even save his life! And it gives my friend some fleece to play with and a reason to come visit me from the city!

Erin, You've made incredible progress! Bees and soon-to-be goats and an almost road? Catfish and potlucks. Wow! You'll be there before you know it!
Bluewrenn Posted - Apr 23 2007 : 11:39:21 AM
yes, they are Angoras.

I'm so excited, I just keep mooning over their pictures... How I am going to wait until they are fully ours is a mystery! They aren't even weaned yet.
