Posted - Mar 24 2023 : 04:03:49 AM 5 am time to rise and shine. I get up without an alarm clock. Got one in my head, that never fails to go off. Though I wish it would sometimes. Get a cup of coffee made and this morning got the fire going from a few coals. Temps are cold over night but starting to warm up during the days now. Hopefully winter will retreat and let spring take over. Still got a foot of snow at least. I head out to check on the mommas and babies. Got my flashlight to show me the way. The stars are shining bright. I missed seeing the northern lights last night, forgot to get up and look at midnight. Cows are all laying down and eyes are glowing, looking at me. We only have 8 cows now to care for. No babies out there, they are all in the calf pen this morning. They got a nice bed of straw in the barn, protected from the weather. They can go in and out as they please. Mommas are finally getting used to that idea. All is well out in the pasture. I have a cow and one heifer yet to calve. the cow should be before the end of the month and will see on the heifer. So out of 6 cows we have 8 calves on the ground. Dang, two sets of twins this year. One set of boys and one of girls. They are all doing fine, just smaller then the others. I turn around and head to the barn. Got Evelyn, our milk cow, and her calf Eli in there. Get Evelyn her grain and got Eli out the gate to the pasture. Share milking with him. He gets all the milk overnight and I get the milk in the afternoon. Otherwise he was getting almost all of it. 5-6 gallons a day is what Evelyn is producing now. That makes Eli pretty chunky and big. I feed Tinker the cat her half can of soft food this morning. She is 10+ years old, so she gets that soft treat. Then onto the chicken coop. I feed the chickens and open up their nest boxes. I don't have the light on anymore over night, and they were all still on the roost sleeping. Back to the house I go to have another cup of coffee and feed myself. Then it is time to get ready for work. A morning in my life on this Wisconsin farm.

Posted - Jul 31 2023 : 02:39:03 AM Thank you all for the kind words. We have been very dry this summer. Hoping for more rain, so I don't have to start feeding hay, which is in short supply. I have already bought some hay to make it through winter.

Posted - Apr 04 2023 : 03:29:47 AM Andrea it is sure fun to watch the calf kids play. Enjoy. I am waiting on the last heifer to calve. Every day she is one day closer, is what I say. We had 15 inches of snow last Friday into saturday. Boy that was a joy to deal with after 2 days of rain. It drifted real bad too. We are all hoping spring will take all the snow away soon. Though then we are left to deal with mud season. Not sure which is worse. We will have alot of fences to fix this year. We had a bad snow and ice storm in Dec, with alot of trees down on fences. I will have to ask our boys to come and help fix fence. They help us and we give them their beef, so a good trade. Well at least I think it is haha. Time to head outside and see what the morning holds for us.

Posted - Apr 03 2023 : 4:46:59 PM Michele when I stayed at my grandmothers house she would stand outside the bedroom door and say rise and shine. She never knocked, she would just say rise and shine then a few minutes later say it again until I finally got up. Congratulations on the twins! So exciting. Our second calf was born today, 8 days after our first.
