For those of us who are unlucky enough to not yet have our homestead-

Do you have a dream state?

I currently live in Idaho, and it is gorgeous, but it is too far from my family! I hate having to waste a whole day of travel just to get home to Wyoming.

So I think my dream state to get my homestead in would be Wyoming so I would be closer to family, low crime rates, and few people. I love the wild and rugged beauty in Wyoming and I really love the fact that it is an under appreciated state. The crowds can stay away! :)

What about you ladies? Do you prefer one area over another?

I love the Midwest. I have always dreamed of having a farmette in WI. My parents have a second home in Hayward, WI. I've traveled the world & I always compare wherever I'm at to the beauty of WI. My husband however loves New England. I'm fine with that though, I love the east coast too. It's just a lot more expensive to live there though.

SEE!! i knew it..
I loved it.. the whole time driving through i was like.. "Hey.. this is really pretty huh?".. & he was like.. " yeah.. pretty nice.. "
i mean hello.. where was he looking really??
we live in F l o r i d a.. i've been here over 20 years..
& yes.. the tourists may love it.. but it ain't all that!
give me a mountain or a meadow or a forest anyday..
I mean he's from West by God Virginia.. HE KNOWS BETTER !!
Right??
ok.. i feel better now..
but i really did like it there..
Anytime we are watching something on television & the landscape is just beautiful he says... hmmmm.. i wonder where that is..
i say.. probably Idaho..
of course that when he usually tell me i'm full of crap again..
( can i say that?)

well.. he's not on the float just yet.. but the parades still moving... so there still hope..

Thanks for the affirmation Alee!!
I'm needing it!

Kathie-

LOL! Oh you made my day!

"Funny though.. my husband didn't have the same feel for it..
i'm really going to miss him..."

You are just _too_ funny!

You should come and visit the Palouse region of Idaho. It is quite a bit different than the southern part of Idaho. We get a bit more rainfall and the weather stays a bit milder so we usually have green grass all through winter. It might not be thriving green grass- but it does stay green! It is truly a beautiful region- maybe your husband would like it more?

I like the Salt Lake area too- Once you get outside the city there is some really beautiful areas and the Alta ski resort area is just gorgeous!

Alee,
I'm so glad you asked this..
I have Always thought that i'd want to live in Oregon or Washington.. Just the beauty & the forest's & no.. i've never been.. just always thought thats maybe where I'd wind up.. Plus the eclectic personalitis that seem to be drawn to that region apeal to me too..
( I'm a product of the 60's.. so anything different sounds perfect for me..)
HOWEVER!
2 years ago my job sent me to salt Lake to work for nearly a month.. now the city itse;f wasn't all that thrilling.. but i did like the people that i was there working with.. & one weekend my husband flew in & we drove to Yellowstone.. yes.. what a drive huh!
So we saw more of Utah.. But still not the areas that i knew i had wanted to.. BUT I DID see IDAHO.. & i really liked it.. then we saw Wyoming & Montana.. ( can't remember which of the two we saw 1st ..) but we drove up from Idaho.. then in.. & stayed the nite right there at yellowstone.. yes.. beautiful of course.. & then got up & had a terrific breakfast in the next state .. then down to Idaho again.. all three states were just truly brethtaking i thought!!.. & then back to salt lake.. & i made it back in time to get to work for next morning.. it was pretty funny actually.. when i told everyone what we had done.. they were like duh... you did what??? yes.. we did a speed vacation through 4 states & only stayed the one nite thanks!
Sorry.. wandering..
But yes.. i'd like to live in Idaho..
i really liked it .. alot..
Funny though.. my husband didn't have the same feel for it..
i'm really going to miss him..

I too feel drawn to New England - perhaps because my mother's mother's family has roots there going back to the early 1600's, chiefly in Massachusetts. And I have always felt that I could be very at home in Vermont. But, along with Meg, my more recent roots are in Ontario, and it's a lovely place to be. Meg - your brick farmhouse with the lilac trees and the sugarbush sounds just about right! Let me know when you find it, and I'll come and visit you there.

Any place in New England, but especially New Hampshire or Rhode Island. I just love New England and kind of wish I never left the east. But, for now northern Idaho is very nice.

I would never want to be anywhere else but Oklahoma. It's got 6 different geography zones. The people are wonderful, not perfect, but wonderful. Every foreigner that I know in my community (and they have lived in other states as well as another country) as well as some out-of-state people say that they want to be here because the people are sincerely nice. If I had my druthers I would have multiple farm/ranch type places around the state. (As long as they are air-conditioned and have a pool LOL!)

There is something about Oklahoma that is in my blood. I grew up on 5 acres in a somewhat rural area. The changing of the seasons, the wacky weather, the beautiful rolling thunderstorms and wind and rain, the awesome sunsets, the variety of birds and plants (we have tons of different trees). I think mountains are gorgeous, California weather is good (but I missed the rain when I was there, or thunderstorms, I should say) I could easily be a Florida beach bum, but I'll always appreciate the total overall combination of Oklahoma geography, climate, flora, fauna and people. It's a cummulative thing.

Definitely Illinois for me -- it's my home state and where I long to move back to. But it has to be Central IL where there are small farming communities and the houses are cheap! We're going to Montana in May and I can't wait to see it. I've always wanted to visit there.

Alee, I have never been to PEI. I too, have been influenced by Anne, from houses I've looked at mls.ca, and from friends that have traveled there. I would love to go see it for real one day!

This is so interesting to see where everyone wants to live. We have a knack for finding interesting places I think! Isn't it amazing how so many locations that others shun are the places we most desire to be?

I have to agree with Washington state but I live on the dry side of the state. The SE corner, very rural, less rain but much more sunshine. My second choice would be Montana. There is something very compelling about that Big Sky country.

Washington State! I've lived in Ohio my whole life, but visited Bellingham/Seattle/Tacoma/San Juan Islands with my husband for a wedding a few years ago. I would move there in a heartbeat. I felt so at home. We would consider moving there, but our families are in Ohio and we couldn't imagine being away from them. When I win the lottery I'm buying a piece of land on Lopez island...not that I actually play the lottery, but it is fun to dream about.

As a canadian girl. I'll have to answer province on this one (though I do love oregon!) I love BC, my adopted home. But it rains too much here, and autumn is just dullsville (lol!). I have always been tempted by the maritimes- maybe Nova Scotia or PEI. The prices are right, and there are places out there with good bones. I think I'd be happy wandering through Anne's land. But I fear that my heart and my history would take me back to Ontario. Just stick me in a little brick farmhouse with an old lilac bush, beautiful rolling hayfields and perhaps a maple sugar bush out back

My dream state is for sure my home state of PA, to be specific Central PA where I live now. We've discussed moving to WV because we can get so much more for our money, but somehow if I don't have my farm in PA - where I've been all my life - it won't feel like I have my dream. I know the seasons here, the farmer's markets, all the back roads. I just need to do it here no matter what it costs me. Guess that's kind of weird and completely not sensible.

Dream *STATE*??? At this point, I'd be happy staying in IL and just getting out of the Chicago suburbs! I'm rather tired of it taking 20+ minutes to get across town. Forty minute trips to the doctors' offices -- yuck. I enjoy being close to Chicago...those four times a year that I go in to the City.

Otherwise. If $$$ were no object...my first choice would be Carmel-By-The-Sea, CA. You really can't beat the weather out there. It's dog-friendly, eco-friendly, and top-notch growing conditions for nearly *everything*. Plus a great number of art shops and artists. Great nearby hiking plus the southern edge of the redwood forests. But seeing as $$$ is an object (and I don't have an extra $4mil lying around for a 700 s.f. cottage that is uninsurable!) I'll just have to visit every few years.

Second choice would be anywhere my kids are. When they are grown and choose their way, I'll stay close to them. Not enough to be intrusive to their wives, but close enough to be a half-day drive away. So if they choose opposite sides of the country (or globe) I'll have two very small residences! ~ K

Hmmmm...it is so interesting to read about all of the different states! What a great discussion - and what great information. I have to say that for me, Utah is my dream state. There are a few things that I would change, if I had a big, huge, magic wand, but on the whole, the landscape is awe inspiring, the people are friendly and the farm I'm on is *home*. That said, it DOES seem like everywhere I visit, I think, "Gee - wouldn't it be great to LIVE here?!?!?!?"

XOXO, Libbie

My son just got back from visiting his girlfriends parents in Franklin, Tenn. he said it was really beautiful there and he thought that I would really like it there. UNFORTUNATELY! Saturday, my husband and I saw The Reaping with Hilary Swank (okay, yes I'm twisted- I like scary movies!)Anyway, set in the South! Very Creepy! And The Skeleton Key.... Something about those bayous and swamps....(shudder!) (I hope I didn't offend anyone from the south!)

My dream state in ALASKA, for sure... I was born and raised there and only left to go to school, but of course I met my husband and fell in love and he, of course, hates the cold weather and so, alas, it truly is only a "dream" state... But it is a beautiful place to dream about even if it is only a dream!!

LOL...I'm afraid Mima that we could not afford the housing out there in California!! I would love to live there though, all that sunshine and the stars at the Costco! I'd love to see Bo Derek picking out stalks of broccoli! LOL......I think we are leaning toward South-East Missouri near the rivers there. But that could change by tonight!

Georgeann, any way I could convince you to move to the beautiful cental coast of Calif? I feel we are kindred spirits and it would be fun to be neighbors! It's still pretty rural here. Can't beat the weather AND you never know who you might see at Costco!

My husband and I are very serious about moving. We have been discussing this at length and yesterday set a goal date of July 31 of this year to have our house ready to sell. I stripped wallpaper off of the walls all day yesterday. We set up a remodeling/fixup budget and we got started!! Today I have more wallpaper to strip and have to prep the kitchen/family room for ceiling paint...taping, draping etc.

My daughter and I went to open houses in our neighborhood and got an idea of what we need to do to get this place ready and the kitchen and baths are the big areas! I have read that all work done in these areas has big payoffs, and we are hoping for that!!

Now to find that smaller place with usuable acreage. I'm pulling up listings in all of the places mentioned by all ya'll farmgirls!! thanks!

Kim, my son lives in Austin!! He loves it there. I'll look the place you mentioned too.
