My husband and I are thinking of relocating to upstate NY near the Watkins Glen region - are there any farmgals from up there that can tell me about the region of NY?

I'm not sure where Watkins Glens is, but I am located in Schoharie County. We are in the beautiful Mohawk Valley region. Lots of farms, just the way I like it. :)

Yes, Black Rock sounds familiar. My goodness, there are two of them?! (Obviously, neither my friends nor I are much into auto racing. We just know it's loud!)

Oops.........hit send too soon.
I was replying to Amie C. The track noise you heard was probabaly Black Rock. I live in Dundee and we don't hear the races in Watkins but Black Rock ( a small dirt track) sounds like it's in my back yard!

You must be up here right now, if you're still planning on seeing the house tomorrow. Good luck! Hope it's everything you dream!

My husband and I (with 2 of our 4 children at the time) moved from LI to what we thought of as "upstate NY" 20 years ago. We're outside of Middletown in Orange County which is part of the Hudson Valley. We're thinking of moving again in a few years as 3 of our 4 children will be on their own and this area is becoming more and more suburban. Watkins Glen area sounds like a beautiful place. Good luck. I am another New Yorker and love the Warkins area. It is beautiful, but having ridden my bicycle there several times I can say that it is not flat, as someone else posted. The area has some lovely valleys and lots of hills. The Finger Lakes region of NYS is beautiful, fertile, friendly and wonderful for agriculture. The farm markets are overflowing with local products. I hear that the Ithaca market is great and a tourist destination. I hope to get there this summerr.

Welcome! I hope that we can soon welcome you as a resident of our great state!

I'm a former upstate New Yorker and my grandparents owned a farm not far from Watkins Glen. It is GORGEOUS there! I'd move back in a heart beat if I hadn't found a gorgeous 39 acres in rural Kentucky, my sweetie's home state.

There are wild white deer roaming around in Pine Hill and Horseheads, NY.
My husband had one run out into the road, and thought it was a goat! LOL
They are blending with the local deer population, and are seen all the time.

Hi Kathy!
I'M HERE ALREADY! LOL
We moved to Catharine, NY from Elmira, NY in November 2009.
It's higher up in the hills, just above Watkins Glen, we can see Seneca Lake from the top of the road that leads to our house.
We wanted to buy an historic place in the country, and here we are!
Our farm has 6 acres, and we lease 50 additional acres for our angus beef herd.
We raise pastured free-range broiler chickens and eggs to sell to local CSA's,
and for our freezer. There are TONS of farmers' markets, and of course the local
wineries and wine trails, cheese trails, lots of local food! I partner with
a CSA, he sells honey, vinegars, veggies and herbs, we sell the chicken & eggs.
There are large amish & mennonite communities here, we buy our staples from their
bulk food stores and farm stands. Sunset View Creamery sells local cheeses, and is
just around the corner from me...we got one of our border collies from him.
MANY local events too, of course, the Watkins racing in the summer, great theater,
summer festivals and more.
I LOVE the nice slow pace here in the country, no traffic, but everything close by if
needed. Everyone who visits wants to stay! LOL
We'd love to have you! I'm working on getting a farmgirl chapter started here soon,
so if you move, please join us! Please feel free to ask if you have any specific questions about the area.
Good luck, wishing you all the best,

-Liz (momdrinkstea)

Thanks for so many encouraging emails girls! I need you all to do some praying for us in the endeavor of being able to get this house. It was at one time a historic property and I am thinking that perhaps we might even be able to secure some grants to improve/renovate some of the buildings.
When we do get there, I am going to be hosting some classes and events - God/Goddess willing and I would be thrilled to have some of my farmgirl friends there with me - my door will forever be opened to my farmgirl friends, you can bet on that.

Hi! We're about two hours away...we're planning to camp in that area once the kids get older, though. There's lots to do in Ithaca. Hope you love the house!

Hi!
I'm familiar with the area-my mom & dad grew up in Auburn & Camillus-we lived in Skaneateles when I was a teenager, and I went to college in Oswego.

It's a nice area-pretty flat and open-many lakes,etc. around. I've been to the Glen-very pretty.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the encouraging words - we are looking at a wonderful old place on the 11th of April, I hope we can swing this and sell our home. I am eager to get someplace to be able to run my business and be around nicer people, my town is not the greatest.
Tina, I am not mad at you silly :) I will miss my deer though!

Hi Kathy!
I second Laluna, it is a beautiful part of the state!! I'm about an hour away and have been there for races and to the Glen, which is UNBELIEVABLE!
Definately open country down there! Hope you find what you are looking for!

Kathy - we live southeast of Buffalo, and are only a couple of hours away from Watkins Glen, so we visit there often (my husband races cars as a hobby!) and it is such a beautiful part of the state! (We often talk about possibly relocating there at some point in the future.) Here's a place to start looking for information - the Schuyler County site: http://www.schuylerny.com/ and the Watkins Glen site: http://www.watkinsglen.us/ (some of it's pretty tourist-y, but you get the general idea). Let me know how your decision-making goes. Central NYS really is a lovely place. Good luck!

aww I wasn't trying to make you feel sad...I'm sorry.

I'm sure that wherever life's road leads you..you will always find a special spot to call your own...it's the "farmgirl way" after all.:0)

I hope that you'll be able to find something that suits you perfectly.

(again..I apologize)
