Anyone live in a travel trailer while waiting on their house to be built? When we sell our house in town we are going to live in our travel trailer for a few months on our country property until we get our manufactured home built and in place. All of our stuff from our house will be put in storage.

The RV already has the basic neccessities in it. We would just have to put in our clothes, food and personal care items. Laundry will be a challenge but I can do it at DB and SIL's house if need be. We will take our gas grill and patio table set so that we can sit outside if we want when the weather is warmer. I think I will get one of those ceramic tower heaters from Walmart for supplemental heat and in case we run out of propane in the middle of the night.

Anyone have any other tips for me? I have a tendency to over pack and I am trying to keep from doing that.

Thanks in Advance

Shelle

We wound up moving out the property last weekend in the travel trailer. So far so good! I have been coming into town during the day and packing up the house and that has helped me remember some things that I might need and take it back to the trailer. I have also taken some things out of the trailer that I decided I didnt really need. Space it pretty precious. I do have a few empy cabinets believe it or not though.

The hardest thing right now is having to take really short showers because we have to fill the fresh water tank every few days instead of leaving it hooked up to water until our well house is completed and we install the pump. Even that isnt too bad really. Just different. We get our water from a hose we have hooked up to my brothers about 250 down the driveway to a hydrant located at his pig barn. We just call him up on the phone and he turns on the water till we call him back to turn it off........lol

Once good thing we did so far was put out those solar landscape lights to light up the front of the trailer at night. It sure is dark way out there in the country without them. I have a picture of the travel trailer set up on my blog. It doesnt look like much right now though because it is a work in progress. We have some ideas about changing the way the trailer faces before summer comes.

Oh and we found out our home doesnt get built again for another 6 months. So we do have to stay longer than we planned already! Hubby loves it so that we wont have a house payment for awhile and can save money.

I lived in a camper for a summer two years ago. It sounds like you have things well planned out. It helped me to have some of my stuff over at my folk's house that I didn't want to pack too deep, like some clothes that weren't everyday, but still might want to wear-things like that. So if you have a reli's house you could store some stuff at and still be reachable might help. I know there's not a lot of room in those things and it tends to close in on a person. I know it's a challenge, but it'll make you appreciate your house even more when it's done. Atleast I was so happy to get out of the camper and into my house. Good luck with everything.

it's amazing what we do for something we really want isn't it? Im in a mobile home still but I just surround myself w/ all the things that make up who I am. It allows me to do some of the things I want to do (like ride horses) while Im working towards that "DREAM". I finally stopped trying so hard to make "it" or that something to happen. I put it in Gods Hands & work towards the life I feel/think, Im supposed to live without driving myself so crazy.

Well I am starting to try to plan what we need to pack in our travel trailer. I dont want to overpack since I tend to always do that. I already have most of the basic things in the trailer already as far as dishes and stuff goes. I just removed things that could get damaged by the freezing weather when we winterized it last fall. Mostly what I will have to add is our clothing, food stuffs, personal items, cleaning supplies and entertainment stuff like movies and my craft stuff. Oh I dont want to forget my journal either. I have to plan that we will also be changing seasons before long and we might need our warmer weather clothing before our house is ready.

Wow there is so much to do!!!

Wow!! We just bought a 34' 5th wheel to live in for the time being. We are long haul truck drivers and it has finally gotten to us about living only in our truck. So we found a whopping good deal and picking it up today. Going to put it in an RV park about 20 miles from here, I'm in the La Quinta Hotel at the moment, and call it home for the time being.

We are looking for a fixer upper or some raw land to build on and I can have my horses again. Life is coming together!!

Shelle,
One thing I'd definitely keep in mind is to plan to be there longer than you really think you will be. Everyone warned us that what will go "wrong" -- weather, scheduling of workers, etc. -- will seem like it did. That was true in our case as well. Good luck!

Wow Patti
I admire you! I bet that was tight living is such a small trailer. I am not sure I could have done that. But if you can make it in a 17 foot surely we can in a 28 foot with all the extras. I will have to make sure I have access to the things I think I might need from storage and by putting them towards the front of the unit. But I bet we will wind up doing like you did and buying whatever it is we are needing rather than look for it very hard. My parents and my brother are right near by so I can borrow somethings if I need to so that will help some I am sure.

If we'd still owned a conversion van, I definitely would have slept in the van -- our "double bed" was a tight fit and not at all comfortable. I had wanted to buy a wall tent, but then the house sold and closed quicker than we thought it would and the camper was available. If I had it to do over, though, I would buy the largest wall tent available from Colorado Yurt and go that route.

Wow, Patti. Your travel trailer/home was smaller than my old station wagon (18'6" from bumper to bumper). If I ever need a temporary place to live, maybe I can use a canopy tent over a camp stove for my kitchen, and sleep in the car. ;)

We lived in a 17' (that's tip of the hitch to tip of the rear bumper, so interior was more like 12') for 7 months last year. Half of the time it was just dh & I, then dd joined us for the last half. We had running cold water, no shower, used space heaters for heat, etc. It's doable, certainly, especially if you have a flush toilet (we did) and arrangements for showers, laundry, etc. Would I do it again? Not in a trailer that small. It was great to be right here on our land where we could work when we had as little as 15 minutes -- we wouldn't have done that if we were driving back and forth from somewhere else.

I will warn you it's more expensive than we thought it would be. Although we didn't have a house payment (except our construction loan), there are many things that we wouldn't have had to deal with if we'd been in a "real" house. For example, I made many more trips to the store because we had a smaller refrigerator and a tiny freezer. That's a minimum of 40 mi round trip & the gas that comes with it. We ate more convenience foods, even though we tried not to. We ended up buying things we knew we had "somewhere" but couldn't find in all the boxes in our two storage units. The two storage units had to be paid for every month. Those sorts of things.

Let me know if you have any questions. I'll be here off & on the next few days. Our son is coming home from college this weekend, so I'll check in less often.

I'm looking at possibly doing the same thing as you with all our extra gear stored in our barns. It'd sure be easier than camping out and would get us on the property sooner! If we don't, I have to wait until we get the septic and plumbing done and the solar power hooked up in the barn.

We had a travel trailer with 2 slide outs and lots of room and storage. You will learn what you can and cant live without. Its suprising what we can live without. But for me, I still wanted it to be homey, so I decorated it just as I would my house. I hung pictures and had candles around and all that kind of stuff. I can give you any other advice if you need it. Just remember to use 1 ply toilette paper! very important!
