Well, we heard from the guys who are building our barns and both barns are done, except for the large overhead doors which come tomorrow morning.

(*minus electricity, plumbing, and interior framing...)

Yippee! Since one of the barns is going to house our temporary living quarters on the farm, this is BIG! It also means we can start moving all the building materials and tools that have been accumulating in our backyard, garage and livingroom down to the farm. AND it means that we can work on plumbing and solar power to the one barn.

And hopefully this will mean we will be down on the farm very soon!

I'm posting pics of the barns this evening and have been following the process on my homesteading blog.

Oh, yes... I would love any recipes for eggplant. I have collected a couple of veggie-specific cookbooks already - one for potatoes, one for pumpkins and I think a squash one, but not one for eggplant, so any eggplant recipes would be greatly appreciated. Esp. any for preserving eggplant - like canning recipes, relishes, jams (?) etc... I am not sure if you can freeze eggplant and I'll need a way to save them.

As far as the farm goes - we are going back down to the farm (it's about 90 minutes away) tomorrow to seal the concrete floors and paint the exposed metal beams so that they won't rust, so I'll take more pics!

And I think that next weekend, we are headed to a special hardware and tool show to purchase a whole mess of industrial type storage racks and then we'll go down and put those up in one of the barns, so we can start moving our stuff down.

Fun stuff!

I seriously need to take a shop class and learn how to use all these tools. I'm going to be doing a lot of the work myself, and I think it'd be more productive if I've had some training first... Hmm... wonder if the high school has a shop class I can visit??

Erin,
Just came across your post. VERY exciting stuff! I'm thrilled for you! I'll havfta take a gander at your pictures later...my computer is awfully slow too.
And speaking of eggplant...my sis used to make a wonderful soup at her resturant using the little white eggplant. If you're interested I can ask her for the recipe.

Eggplant? Most of the seeds I have so far are the usual purple variety, but some are long like zucchini and some are the regular teardrop shape. I can't remember what the ping tung looked like, but I want some of the white ones and some of the rose bianca ones too - they're a white and purple one that's really pretty. I love eggplant so I'm going to try as many varieties as I can find!

There are some great selections in the catalogs - I went through dozens of them and narrowed my catalog choices to three: Seed Savers, Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds and Seeds of Change. The catalogs helped me determine what varieties I wanted, and when I get the money set aside, I'll order the big orders from them. But until then, most of my purchases so far have been from ebay.

Well, I say, if ya can't hang 'em, DRAW some curtains on the wall, ha; or take an old window and paint or glue some beautiful scenes on the glass and hang it up where you'd like to bring the "outdoors" in! The property looks great, and I read a bit of your journal. The eggplant variety you bought seeds for sounds intriguing; what does it look like? I LOVE eggplant parmesan, so naturally I am curious..... Best of luck in a speedy finish (and the windmill sounds like a great idea!!). Nance

Nance, I have to laugh - no hanging curtains for me - there's no windows in the barn!!! Even with the apartment in there. We will probably have an outdoor kitchen and dining area to get us out of the barn apartment as much as possible, and the barn apt. will be an efficiency - with a tiny, tiny bathroom and kitchenette, and a living area that also serves as our bedroom.

We are still investigating the solar power part - but DH has some plans. I don't know that much about it myself - I'm leaving those decisions to him, and concentrating on some other areas. But we're doing a "green" house as much as we can...grey water septic, water collection tanks, etc...

We also plan to supplement the solar with a new windmill from Northern Europe - I think that they are from Denmark or Sweden. They are capable of producing electricity with 2-4 mph winds, which is much more realistic for us. We'll also have a generator for emergencies.

I've posted (or will post in the next few minutes) some pictures of the new buildings!

Erin- What great news! What type of solar system will you be installing? We are very interested in that for our addition but are busy comparing all the info we can get since we do get "real" winter.
Wishing all good things for the progress of your new home!

with a happy heart
