Hate that land is so expensive!!! Frustrating trying to find land but we will do it. Would love to save an old house if we can. Keep being positive is all I can do!!! |

A friend has Tennessee Walker horses in my pastures that he raises and sells. Many in the area have cows, and if he ever takes his horses off I may do Lowline cows or goats. My boyfriend has Lowline cows and one Zebu.

We have been looking in the east Texas area quite a bit. We are still about two years away from the big move but we are hoping to make another trip out there next year. 12 acres sounds lovely. We want space and a ranch house and gardens and orchards and animals and stars at night. Our family says they don't get it. What I don't get are rules and HOA's and living within sneezing distance of a neighbor. Pardon if I am too forward but what do you raise or grow for ag exemption?

I love living in east Texas on my 12.6 acres in my 114 year old farmhouse. I'm in Lone Oak - a small town of 598 people. There is a lot of land here and some old houses available. I have Ag exemption on my acreage and that helps lower the taxes. You just need to look around in east Texas - property is available.

Question for Texas sisters.
My hubby and I are planning to retire in Texas. We weren't born there but trying to get there as fast as we can.  We visited a year ago last October.Hubby's family lives in Fort Worth. We visited a couple towns in the area and talked to a lot of folks. One thing that we were told was if you have land you should have one stock animal per acre. Otherwise the property tax bill will be very high. We are looking for 5 to 10 acres but not sure if we are ready for that many animals from the start. Tried to talk to realtors but got a runaround on taxes.

I love Texas too. Our son lives in Austin. Nearer to hill country. I love Fredricksberg. But I hate hot weather. Hope you find the farm you're dreaming about.

Heather, keep us posted if you do find an old house. My husband and I moved to Texas three years ago; The Texas Hill Country/Kerrville.
I miss Louisiana, but every day I appreciate Texas more and more.

Heather, I'm with you, I love Texas too, born & raised in Dallas - lived in northcentral Texas for 35 years and now I have been in northeast part going on five years. Hope you find your piece of land and the house you are looking for.
