Posted - Jun 20 2014 : 08:12:41 AM I am so happy that I don't know what to do with myself. We got the base-model, economy-sized farm, but it is a farm. It's nestled among much grander properties. We don't move in until next month, so everyday brings another exciting idea of what to do with my farm. :)
I know how to raise and preserve food and can even deal with the East Texas drought (where the farm is), but thinking about raising chickens makes me feel like someone who hasn't been around babies who just got handed one to hold. I don't want to "drop" my chickens or other livestock. I have no experience with farm animals, but my dreams of fresh eggs and fresh milk spur me to learn. But it still scares me. It's a wonderful thing that this forum has so many real farmers who share their experiences. I admire you all so much!

Posted - Jun 21 2014 : 09:56:52 AM Thanks Alicia and Darlene! I am glad to hear they're easy and I will be sure and ask.
And now I'm a chicken mommy -- I've got two Buff Orpingtons, ready to lay, waiting for me in Texas. That's got to be the easiest way to start with chickens ever. :)

Posted - Jun 20 2014 : 11:45:23 AM That's GREAT news!!!! Just think of ALL your new adventures! Keep a journal with plenty of pics, it will be so fun to look back on in the future. It doesn't matter the size of the farm but the willingness to give things a try & it sure sounds like you have that!
Chicks are fun to start with! Keep them dry & warm, plenty of water & they will do fine. They're tougher than what they look. Have fun Smiles Judy
