Hi,
Just thought I'd pass along this resource for those who are considering returning to farms or are dreaming of/ wanting to farm. There is alot to learn about the lifestyle and one good way is by reading, of course. Countryside Magazine & Small Stock Journal (the magazine of modern homesteading), is an excellent resource and a good reality check. It is publised bi-monthly and is chock full of articles, mostly written by subscribers and those who live the lifestyle. It's a great read and an educational tool.
Here's a link to their website where you can check it out, and also order a copy of the magazine to review. Have fun!

Thank you for the resources ladies. My husband and I are moving to our new homesteading lifestyle soon. We just retired and we bought a house on two acres in Idaho. We plan on organic gardening, raising poultry chickens, a cow, and laying hens. We were fortunate to have been preparing ourselves for years for our dream of our hobby farm/homesteading lifestyle. But know we have much much more to learn.
Anything we can read will be helpful. Lucky enough we are retiring young and we are strong enough to be able to do the work ourselves.

The community college where I attend has a group of classes about organic farming, they are in the process of getting it to certificate status. One of the classes I took was based on the book by John Jeavons : How to Grow More Vegetables and the other class was on the book by Eliot Coleman: Four-Season Harvest, they are both excellent books for those considering this type of gardening.

It is harder to find unless you can get to a Barnes and Noble, or Borders book store, something like that. Worth looking for. I notice that a couple local stores near us are carrying it now, but when I was in Calif it was hard to find. Good luck!

I keep looking for Countryside, as I would like to read an issue or two before I subscribe -- but, so far, there are none to be found in local stores. [sigh] Guess I'll keep trying! :)

I'd like to know if Countryside is mainly for those living "out in the country" or would they have articles for others also?

I, too, am a subscriber to Countryside Magazine. I always find something immediately useful, and something to save for later :) The recipe for skunk odor eliminator (July/August 2003) really works..just ask my dog!

Countryside Magazine is great - I just started subscribing. For a wannabe farm girl - it takes my mind to the places I want to be.

I want to welcome you too, Michele. Sounds like we have things in common! Always glad to meet another spinner!
I really recomend the Carla Emery book too! I actually got to meet Carla last October when she came to our little town and I hosted her for a little book discussion in my home. Imagine that. She is so sweet and down to earth. Her book has always been a great resource and I think ANYONE could use the info it has..even if you only dream of a farm of your own...lots of practical stuff there.

Hi, I just wanted to say thank you. I have been reading about farms & homesteading & all your info has been very helpful. I am almost ready w/ my husband (who is ill) to purchase a small peice of land to have a few sheep, chickens & a horse or two. I spin & hook-rugs w/ the yarn I dye w/ natural plants & it's been my dream for most of my 52 years. You all have been so helpful, thank-you, Michele
