oh gurlfrenz .. think good thoughts!!! i was talking to frank and wednesday all day yesterday about how hard it is going to be for me to live so far away from them .. but i do love our life in Kentucky and adore or log cabins in the woods ... DON'T WANT TO GIVE THAT UP!!!

HOWEVER, how fun it would be to find a home (even a condominium ... IF they allow big DOGS!!) ... ON THE WATER ... here in Ohio. It would be our 'second home' .. so we could come up here more often and stay longer .. and have our dogs with us (can't bring them to wednesday's house ...dogs are too big .. they have cats .. and a few blocks away is a big road with lots of traffic).

this morning i was talking to honey hunk on the phone and mentioned the idea to him .. told him we would still have our dream farm in kentucky .. but that this way .. he would have his much loved WATER FRONT .. and big water where he could SAIL! AND .. the biggest blessing of all would be that the grandchildren would be less than half an hour from us!!! i told him that i think it is important that we be near our grandchildren a lot while they are growing up .. in this 'chapter' of our book of life.

he agreed and thought it a good idea ... IF we find a wonderful place that we will love to come to.

i might have the kids take me on an 'outing' to see some areas .. to take hank to see when he comes visits.

don't think he will want to do any serious looking until next spring .. since we have a pretty full plate with a 6 week trip planned to Africa and Amsterdam this coming January/February.

i am soooooo excited and soooooo hope this dream comes true!!! xoxo, frannie

How wonderful Frannie. I do so adore my granddaughters. Sophie was also my great aunt's name, on my mother's side. My mother was so touched by that. Congratulations, and your home really does sound wonderful. Well, enjoy that baby. Talk to you soon.

little sofia catherine is snuggled in my arms as i type ..droopy little eyes opening and closing .. making sure i am here as she travels to the land of nod after a big milk snack! sofia is after her great, great grandmother on her dad's side .. and catherine (my middle name) is after here great, great grandmother on her mom's side of the family.

we are pretty much now in our 'vacation' home in kentucky. really couldn't get more heavenly than in those old civil war log cabins in the woods!

olivia is such a pretty name too. xo

Frannie - Is your newest grandchild named Sofia? My oldest granddaughter is Sophie, and her younger sister is Olivia. We don't know what the new baby's name will be yet, but we do know it's a boy. These are my daughter's children, and like you, are the first "set." When my son settles down, there will be more. I understand about waiting on that second home because of your daughter's future plans. I wouldn't want to be far away from my children and their families either. We thank the Lord all the time that we are so blessed to still have them near us. Our cottage is only 30 minutes away and that does make it easy for family to come visit. Renting a houseboat would be great! I really believe that time spent with your family is so precious and that it continually reinforces the safe haven that is so important in so many ways.
Ellen - Gee, I never thought of myself as inspirational. Thank you , that was very nice of you to say. People get so caught up in the everyday business of life, making it very easy to forget about their dreams. When I start feeling overwhelmed, I make myself take a step back, relax, remember what is important and strive to keep that in focus. It's not always easy though, as we all know.

Julie-your dream story was so fun and inspirational to read too. I agree-we must chase after our dreams-eventually we'll catch them! I'm chasing one of my own and hope for it all to come together next spring-a move to NC. I'll make a huge post as soon as the finals are in place. :)

Frannie-I understand completely about you wanting to be within half hour to them and renting a summer cottage sounds like a great option - all the best! :)

julie .. that is such a sweet story .. and how great it is to have your grands 'come home' to grammie's and grandaddy's place ..

when we lived in maryland .. we lived on two different but wonderful rivers that fed into the chesapeake bay and then to the atlantic ocean. we had a canoe, a row boat, a big sailboat and cabin cruiser ... our 'first set' of grandchildren visited often .. and stayed long .. creating great memories. (they are now 13 and 20) .. and now our 'newer set' of grandchildren (ages 5 and 6 weeks) will be visiting us in the hills and valleys of kentucky .. experiencing farm life (they are city dwellers .. toledo) .. we are only 20 miles from a beautiful lake with a lovely beach for swimming .. and plan to rent a 'house boat' for some of their visits to us .. so they will have the best of both worlds. nothing is finer than making warm memories with out grandchildren.

well gurlfrenz .. we kinda' put that water-front home on the back burner .. cuz' as life will happen sometimes .. my daughter was talking with me about the possibility that they could end up somewhere else in the future because of job opportunities. ohhhhh gooooodnesssss .. wouldn't we just DIE if we ended up buying another home in or near toledo to be nearer to them for longer visits .. and they were to move away!!!!!

we talked about how we've lived 'on the water' for 25 years .. and are soooo happy right in the forest in kentucky .. sooooo ... perhaps what we would rather do .. is to just 'rent a summer cottage' .. somewhere REAL close to them .. wherever they might go in the future.

hank says he doesn't see 'the sense in it' .. of us owning and have responsibility for TWO homes .. when the one we have is completely paid for with no mortage and low utilities ... we could take the money a second home would cost us and rent anywhere we wish for as long as we wish. and that way, we also won't be saddled with having to SELL a home if the kids were to move to another area. well, i'm thinking that probably will work best for us.

for now .. we will jus' roam up and down the roads for visits .. oh and ellen darlin' .. i wouldn't want to be more than 1/2 hour (AT THE MOST) from their home in toledo .. THAT is the 'method in my madnesss' .. to be able to visit those grands within 1/2 hour or less.

Hi Frannie,
I'm new to the forums. I just introduced myself on 10/27 in the Welcome Wagon/New York section. I just wanted to tell you to never give up on that dream. My husband used to visit friends on a small lake about 30 minutes from our home. We would go for boat rides and dream that maybe one day we could own a cottage on the lake. One day our friend called us and said she heard one (a real fixer-upper) was going to be for sale and would we be interested? You bet we were. We went to look at in February with snow practically up to our hips. It was in bad shape, but because of that we were able to get it a very reasonable price. Even though we are certainly just a regular, middle class income family, we knew if we didn't buy this cottage, we would never have another opportunity like it again. We knew it would be a struggle having two properties; but it was worth it. That was 14 years ago. Since then the children have grown, one is married with two children and a third on the way. And there is NOTHING like taking your grandbabies in the lake with you, pulling them around in little floaty baby rafts, teaching them to swim and even waterski! It can be done. I wish you all the best in your quest for this dream. Never give up - we didn't!!

Frannie-I love this idea. You may want to check out areas around Sandusky-Port Clinton, Huron, Vermilion-all beautiful towns. I grew up about 20 minutes from them. They are about an hour from Toledo.
All the best!

Frannie, got to tell him a name other than Toledo. There must be a nearby village on the water.... hopefully. I just read the other thread where you said you weren't a water person. And Hank rowed/sailed. I have to tell you, Phil built us a 34 foot wooden sailboat many years ago and we sailed across the bay and up the Rappahanock many times, along with other VA rivers... but one year I became seasick FOR LIFE. No kidding. I've tried everything, even drinking powdered ginger in water hourly. Seabands helped the most. Eventually that boat was sold, and I believe is still in Annapolis. It was beautiful... So, all this to say, my water days slid to a halt. He plans to build another boat one day, but not to sail...

I hope you get your waterfront home near the grands!
Ann

actually, indiana isn't all that far away either .. i think it is right over the bridge from louisville! of course, it depends on what PART of indiana you are speaking of!

Frannie oh Frannie! At the description of "Crooked Tree Hollow" I cannot believe you got Hank to leave it! Of course that tells me even more how extraordinary Cabin Creek must be!
I sincerely hope your waterfront (& grandbaby )dreams come true! And hey, Ohio is much closer to Indiana than Kentucky.
Blessings Frannie!

julia ... you described our home in annapolis, maryland ... Crooked Tree Hollow .. i loved to sit on the dock sipping coffee early in the morning as hank rowed for an hour .. baby ducklings paddling after their momma's in the springtime .. fish jumping so fast you'd only hear the splash if you weren't looking at the spot they jumped .. all manner of birds flying up out of the cove .. an occasional big turtle sunning himself on a nearby rock. the sun rising lifting the veil of mist in the morning ... the sun's setting in the evening turning the sky from pinks to oranges to purples .. the big moon smiling down on us overhead. t'was heavenly. xo

Sounds like a grand idea to me! I have always wanted a house with a water front. To sit and sip my joe as the fog lifts off the lake, with the bright fall colors breaking through with the rising sun making them look electric. Ah, what could be better!

hmm..wonder if he'd like a big touring kayak..the kind with the rudders and about 16 ft. long? my husband had one of those and loved it! he hasn't kayakked in over 6 yrs now..after our son was born..but he used to love it.might be something Hank would like and kayaks can go places that bigger boats can't and can be strapped right onto a SUV, car, or whatever with a rack. And the touring kayaks are very, very difficult to tip, not like a canoe...anyhow..I do hope you are able to find a nice place to live..barring that you can have Hank buy a houseboat(smiles)...there is one listed near here for 425,000 ..it is built onto a barge and the pictures were quite amazing actually.
Best of luck to you Miz Frannie..may all your dreams come true.

Honey Hunk and water ... he's not a power boater .. but loves to ROW (scull) and SAIL. he loves is very quiet on the water. ha! mary ann .. i honestly don't remember him ever coming home raving about dead fish smell. you are tooooo funny! don't think he wants another huge sailboat .. but definetly a 'day sailer' .. he's talking about getting one of thos for our lake in nearby cambellsville, ky. i've never been much of a 'water person' .. but love to sit on the dock watching nature ... our home in maryhland was on a private cove on a quiet river feeding into the chesapeake bay ... so we had the best of all 'water worlds' i think. he rows every day that the wind isn't too high in kentucky .. and that is a SIXTY MILE round trip. but .. he drove that far back and forth to work in washington, d.c. .. so he doesn't seem to mind riding the winding, hilly backroads. xo

That would be a wonderful solution! And with the additional pressures on the housing market lately, it's a buyer's market out there right now. Perhaps hooking up with a good realtor and being rather fussy right now would be a good idea.

I really identify with your hubby's love of the water. I grew up on a big river, and had a boat years before I ever had a car. Ask him if he gets nostalgic at the smell of dead fish; I bet he does. There's something about the combination of dead fish and two cycle engines that brings me right back to when I was a kid. *sigh*

I hope you get a chance to do this; it'd be a blast for your grandkids, too!
