My Tiny Farm is the keeper of a family tradition: Mom's recipe for her homemade bread and butter pickles from fresh picked garden cucumbers.

Here is the recipe written in her handwriting! It is something that I cherish every year when I get it out! So, my daughter Kelley's garden exploded last week with cucumbers and I was the recipient of the bounty. Of course, the cucumbers come with the request.. Mom, will you make Grandma's pickles??? And once my brothers and sisters hear that Mom's pickles were put up, they will be wanting to know when I will be sending some their way!

Here is how easy it is to make this family favorite. Start with getting the jars sterized.

Next slice the cucumbers and onions, salt them down and let sit for 2 hours before you rise in cold water.

Then everyone in the "pool " of spices, brown sugar and vinegar.

Because these pickles taste so perfect on a sandwich, it was time to get out the grain grinder and grind the wheat and make some bread.

Next step, remove the pickles after 15 minutes in the water bath.

Finish baking the bread...

And just look at who thinks he should get the credit for everything!

Did I not mention last posting about this Scarecrow? He is really somethin'!! Maybe I should put the bread in the cabinet just in case he decides on a midnight snack! You just can't be sure about Scarecrows...especially this one! Are you putting up some favorite pickles this year? I would love to hear about your recipes too!!

Hi Missy- Please do use my recipe!! I hope you enjoy the results!

Denise, yes the stove would work if it was attached to a propane tank and properly vented inside the house. I just enjoy it for it's old charm!

Pickles look soooo good. Would you mind if I used your recipe? DH is wanting a good one for the cucs he's growing in the garden. Last year he made pickles using a pre-packaged spice mix and although they were good it wasn't GREAT.

hugs,
-missy-

Hi Winnie,
Your pickles look sooo good & thanks for sharing the recipe! I love trying new ones.
Nothing makes a kitchen smell better than hot bread out of the oven! Looks great.
I can't beleive your cucs are already in jars. We just finished planting the garden & it snowed a bit over the weekend again.

Sneaky scarecrow! He's trying to hide all those pickles behind his back.

I have a recipe for garlic dills that my daughter really loves! I have to pull out the recipe so I can make a copy for her to try for herself this year. :) Your scarecrow is cute and I love the old stove. Is the stove usable or just for show?

O, a trouble's a ton or a trouble's an ounce,
Or a trouble is what you make it!
And it isn't the fact that you're hurt that counts,
But only--how did you take it?
