I just had to share this, looks so exciting to me! I live in Buffalo, New York, zone 5B. I came across this article on facebook from Upstate Gardners Journal called seed sowing in the snow/garden design! It uses plastic milk jugs to start sowing your seeds now, I'm going to give it a try! (drink more milk=more milk jugs!) |

I can't wait to get started. I am not sure I want to build a green house yet so this would be a great start for me. Of course with two kids we have crazy amounts of milk jugs to use too.

Hi Ladies- I've done wintersowing for the last couple of years,it's so much fun . You can use the containers from Sam's Club that have a lid,for example from grapes. Poke holes at the bottom and top for drainage holes. Make sure you mark them with magic marker. Water them good and throw them outside on your porch. When it's time for them to come up they will. alot of times I'll mark on a plastic fork with seeds I planted. I sew pretty heavy my seeds and I'll just separate it when it's time to put in the ground. On the Garden Forum, Winter Sowing, there is alist of plants that do good when you winter sow them. |

I got started earlier this evening -- modestly, with just two jugs -- for "Bright Lights" Swiss Chard and "Detroit Dark Red" Beets. Fascinating project! Can't wait to see if it works for me. |

Thank you ladies!! I have been dreamin and plannin over seed catalogues and my packets for weeks now. I'm gettin so antsy to plant that I have filled the greenhouse trays and have the labels all wrote out and ready. I can't start it till March. I'm gonna pull out the milk jugs I've been savin to use as drip waterers and use some of them to start plantin some to try!
I love all the happy inablers out there who get it!!

I just saw a very similar article in one of my magazines-
It was in the February 2012 issue of Garden Gate magazine and it showed how you can start various perennials now in milk jugs so they are ready in the spring.
Very interesting concept indeed- and I am sure that it would most likely be a success in most cases.
Seems like it is a very inexpensive alternative to a greenhouse. Think I may have to give it a try with some lettuce!
