Today has been a good day on the future-house front!
First, the concrete guy has the footings and some other thing (I forget what it's called) done and should be putting up the forms for the walls tomorrow, if the called-for rain holds off.
I actually hope he can't do it tomorrow, though!! It's been so hot & dry here, and the farmers really need the rain. My basement can wait a few days.
Second, we talked to our contractor and he said that if all goes well and there are no snafus, he'll be done with the house he's building now in 6 weeks (or less). Then he can start ours.

Patti - ditto on the "hang in there!" Sometimes (actually, ALL of the times I've built anything or remodeled), things take a much more winding road than I had planned. In the end, however, it seems like there was a reason for it. At the time, however, it was extremely frustrating!!! Sending great wishes and thoughts...

I got major information last night. We met with our contractor and he told us that due to some major issues with the house he's currently building (the owners are constantly changing their minds and having them redo things or in some cases they can't make a decision so they're really behind), so he's several weeks behind at the least. He had planned to start our house today, but it could be 3 or 4 more weeks, so . . .
He, his crew (of 1), and dh are going to do all the "framing up" weekend after next when dh is off work!! That following Monday the company that makes the roof trusses will come measure, then it will be about 2 weeks until the trusses arrive, and then they'll put the roof on.
Good news -- our house will be framed-up in 2 weeks (weather permitting). And we could be living in the basement in 4 weeks!
Bad news -- that's the weekend I take our dd to Mizzou for an all-day "Meet Mizzou" prospective student visit. Then we're going to the football game that night. So I won't be here to see most of the framing-up!  Dh will be too busy working to take pictures, and there's nobody really to ask, so I'm pretty disappointed about that.
I'm just so extremely grateful that dh's cousin and his helper are willing to work all weekend, especially between two full weeks of work. That's a real sacrifice, especially considering that he isn't charging us any extra for the labor!
So on one hand, I'm incredibly excited, but on the other, I'm somewhat disappointed.

How are things going with your house? I enjoy reading about your adventure in building. We are still finishing our new home but then are homes ever really finished? Hope all is going well.

That is neat that you have been able to do something on the place and though it may not be "major" it sounds very important, and your DH sounds like he is working so hard at this! I am so excited for you and will keep checking back for updates!! Hope the time passes quickly for you!

Hi Cyndi! There has been some progress but not via the contractor. My dh has spent every day he's had off painting the black sealer (tar-like stuff) on the outside of the basement walls, then putting the rubber/plastic corrugated pipe around the perimeter of the basement (only took a few minutes for that), and THEN . . . putting 2' (I think) gravel on top of that pipe.
He couldn't use a tractor or anything because he couldn't get close enough to the hold (the dirt would start falling in because it isn't packed as tight as it would normally be), so he had to dump the gravel as close to the house as he could, carry it over by the wheelbarrow full, then shovel it in place. It was backbreaking work, especially in our Missouri heat & humidity. God bless him, he even did this when he was working night shift -- he'd come home and sleep 4 or 5 hours, then shovel rock a couple of hours before needing to clean up and go to work again.
I tried to help, but I'm just not strong enough -- gravel is really heavy. I felt really bad, but I know my limits, where I can be of help and where I'm more of a hindrance  , so I worked on other things, like mowing, clearing out brush in what will be our yard, etc., etc.
So we're doing the little odds & ends we can do while waiting for the contractor. BUT, if all goes well and he's able to stay pretty close to his estimate, he'll be finished with the other house 2 weeks from today, which means he'll be starting our house 2 weeks from this Monday!!
On one hand, the time has gone by so quickly. That's probably an "age" thing -- the older I get, the faster time seems to go. On the other hand, it's been a loooooong 4 months. 
So there has been progress, but not the type you can really see, if that makes sense. Thank you again for asking!

Oh Patti do share with us the start to finish photos when you can. I would love to seee this in process! Good luck to you on your new place. I remember when my Inlaws built their place over 18 years ago and we still tak about the snafus that happened, so all this little stuff will pass and make great stories for years to come. Keep us posted!

The concrete man/family (a man and his wife, son, and daughter!) poured the basement flour today, so I think the basement is finished except for the exposed wall on the end.
Our contractor says he should, barring any problems, be done with the other house in 4 weeks after this one. Then he'll start ours. He told us months ago that for what he's doing to ours, it should take him 6 weeks. At least, that's what I understood him to say.
So, if all goes well, we should be living in our basement in about 10 weeks.
