The engineer for the electric co-op came by to check on us today, which I couldn't believe. He said we've been on his mind living here without electricity (rules say you can't get electric to a new building site until you have a well and basement/slab poured). He saw that the basement has been poured and said he was going to go ahead and clear us for hook-up!! This is the best news we've had in days, and I'm really excited.

This is one of the things about country living that I really cherish -- the fact that customer service around here really is customer-oriented, not just a monotonous "Thank you, Mrs. so & so" when the person sees your name on the check (can you tell poor customer service is a pet peeve of mine?). People out here tend to take care of each other and know everyone, and that helps alot. Our engineer is a cousin of dh's cousin on the other side, and they've sort of known each other all their lives in a distant sort of way, and I'm sure that helped some, but that's just the way it is out here. Everyone is related somehow.

I hope you ladies don't get tired of these updates of stuff that's really not that monumental, but I get really excited at each step and know the farmgirls will understand. Just tell me when to shut up, okay?

First of all, I just reread my original message and there's a huge mistake. The basement has been DUG, not poured! He really bent the rules for us, which wasn't at all clear since I typed what I was wishfully thinking.

We got our power today, though, and it's wonderful to have A/C, the water pump working, the internet without battery only, etc, etc.

As for the weather -- we've had rain 4 out of 5 days this week, including some real downpours. Yesterday we got 2 3/4" in a a couple of hours and creeks were over the roads, etc. The farmers probably loved the slow, steady rains earlier in the week, but yesterday and today's downpours just ran off, not doing much good. It did delay the concrete guy; he was supposed to start doing the footings and forming the walls on Monday, and he hasn't been able to work at all. Maybe next week!

Hello Patti,
CONGRADS!!!!! I know how you are feeling. We finally moved in Memorial Weekend in our new house. You are very right about the country living. Our building inspector was the coolest and very personal. As a matter of fact he was so trusting of us after he saw the type of work being done on the house he never even came for the final inspection just say OK and signed us off. Our propane guys is cool too. Even the UPS and Fed ex people are more relaxed. Take lots of picture as you build. We found them amazing to look at and see the progress of the project. Happy building.

Pray for our troops to come home safe and soon.
Enjoying the road to the simple life :>)

having lived and still live in a unfinished house i know how monumental (sp) stuff like power and water (not that i have that yet) can be. i am so happy for you to be able to get the power in quick.
